I've shuffled through numerous recordings of this concerto (Lisitsa's, Ashkenazy's, Trpceski's, and countless others on RU-vid) and only few can come close to capturing the kind of excitement that HJ relays through her recordings. Definitely makes me sit up in my chair and listen closely.
I heard other performances of this concerto, and I think HJ Lim's way of playing is above the other interpretations concerning the second movement; she understood the Jazzy colours of the beginning of this movement and gives a total freedom to the rythmus (much more than a simple rubato), away from the classical rules of propriety. She also benefits a great recording.
She is amazing and she just keeps getting better and better every time I see her play. She wills herself to play at a level she imagines herself to be at - and she reaches until she gets there. Amazing. World class talent and dedication.
Listen to the cadenza 9:30 - 11:45 !! It is like a raging roaring storm and thunder and lightning. Everybody finally has to recognize that HJ Lim is really incredibly ingenious.
I couldn't help but notice that on close-ups the two violinist just behind her seemed amused by her interpretation. Their facial and body language gives me the impression they're laughing up the sleeves at her innovations. I love her playing and I am very receptive to the way she plays this beautiful piece that I've heard a hundred times, but never like this.
Phenomenal...Fabulous...Mesmerizing... Breathtaking.... how could I describe this playing of HJ Lim without using superlatives, because she is the one to play the very superlatives! The second part she playes very musical. Bravo!
Rachmaninoff asked Horowitz to play this Concerto many times, but Horowitz never did. I believe this is the dream performance Rachmaninoff had in mind. The cadenza is even more electrifying than the composers own performance.

Wow…totally blown away here from her Scintillating ENERGY!!!! Utterly BRILLIANT performance!!!! Plays with total Abandon!!!! ELECTRICALLY CHARGED WITH 10 MILLION VOLTZ!!! I can't believe that apathetic audience just sat there….they should have SPRUNG to their feet to Honor this BLAZING NEW TALENT. What's wrong with these people? So Dead….everyone is so dead these days. They walk around in a Daze.
This video was my introduction to HJ about 5 years ago, was looking for a good performance of Rach 1. When I saw her walk out on stage "in character" (she looked fired up) I knew it was going to be good. Still love this performance. She's a genius and one of the greats of our time.
Fritz Maisenbacher You are not exaggerating one bit! Such bravura - nearly spilt my drink at the starting octaves! I applaud all the risk-taking. Now I am glad to see there is Rach 3 on the list - here's hoping it's the big cadenza.
HJLim is an outstanding musician so much more than a pianist ! Fntastic readings in everything she touches . I want to hear her Schumann concerto and Brahms 1st I know will be incredible as I've grown to love her awesome 2nd concerto !
This is might be my favorite section of all rachmaninoff compositions. The culmination for me peaks at 16:44 I feel like melting into oblivion when I hear it. I first heard it over 30 years ago and it is still growing on me.
The concentration and overwhelming interpretation of H J Lim covers all the spirits of Rachmaninoff and huge land of Eurasia. She takes me to the deep, authentic calmness which solves the fundamental paradox of human life in capitalized mental world . She shows how the young woman pianist could be beautiful and great in the musical achievements. Wonderful,99%
In my humble taste, I like this tempo. If Lim does I like everything. I believe Lim and I appreciate masterpiece only. Lim is creative artistist. Rejecting conventions Lim plays what she presues. l see this attempt as the attitude of awaken artist who is ahead of its time. It is excellent performance.
Ms. Lim is a force of nature...like a hurricane or tsunami. She is a consummate artist. I wonder if she is aware of just how sensual a woman she is on top of her artistry. One can derive just as much pleasure out of her body language and gestures as they can listening to the playing.
Yes, that sounds like the premiere of a first ambitious work of someone who would give everything to become a famous Solist. It has the force which the Young Rachmaninoff could have brought up in the premiere, which he played himself.
