The seven dislikes on this video must be from Steinway salesmen: Bolet is making sweet music on a Bechstein model EN-280 piano here, made in Berlin.

Everything Bolet plays is elegant, sophisticated and honest. What a great artist.

+Gregg Michalak Right. His plays sounds elegant. Some pianists like Lang Lang plays very aggressively, but his performance seems much detailed in every key he touched.

Does anyone ever play dishonesty. I have never witnessed a performance that was not "honest." Has anyone?

@@Jen-Yueh_Hu THE OPPOSITE OF HONEST WOULD BE DISHONEST. THE OPPOSITE OF FLAMBOYANT WOULD BE SEDATE. THEIR IS NOTHING WRONG WITH FLAMBOYANCE. TO BE OVERLY FLAMBOYANT RAISES EYEBROWS. BOLET PLAYED CERTAIN PASSAGES WITH UTTER FLAIR AND FLAMBOYANCE; THE SCORE CRIED OUT FOR IT. DID YOU ACTUALLY WATCH THE VIDEO?😩😫

This video was back in the mid-1980s, as Mssr. Bolet's life was coming to a close. And yet, you can still feel the power of his touch on the keys of the Bechstein Concert piano. He knew this piece as well as Rachmaninoff, himself, if I may be so bold. His hands are surely as large/long as Rachmaninoff's, so the mechanics were child's play. Bolet, in my opinion is among the finest 2 or 3 persons who interpret this masterpiece. I won't DROP names here, but a number of very talented concert pianists play the opening of this score WAY TOO Slow. It needs to be UP to tempo! At any rate, God used this particular piece of music to change my life, forever. My Love for the Piano.

Major Jesse Carnes I agree with others timing. Ever see the piece on Masterpiece Theatre where he reviews all 3movements with students! His comments are appreciated, valued. He asks students " what do you want to convey to the audience?" States play your own interpretation, for Each changes things around. Brilliant man.

I wish piano was recorded better. The wonderful Rachmaninov left hand accents and filigree at the beginning seem lost in the shuffle. Jorge Bolet is voicing the melodic lines strongly, from the video, but alas, orchestra as recorded, overwhelms the wonderful lines….some tasty Artistry here. I’m a fan of JB.

What a wonderful combination of soloist and conductor. I was lucky enough to see Jorge Bolet performing the Rachmaninov Third around the same time, possibly on the same trip to the UK. A true master of poise, elegance and musical intergrity with no need for the head-tossing and other histrionic nonsense you get from "modern" performers like Anna Federova or (god forbid) Lang Lang. Paavo Berglund was a superb and very under-rated conductor. I attended many of his concerts when he was Chief Guest Conductor of the RSNO and his Nielsen Fourth still lingers in my memory 30-odd years later.

Jorge considered facial expressions, ect... to be emotional "leaking" that took away from what flowed through his hands to the instrument. (I'm paraphrasing his own words.) I've never seen a single live performance of his where he strayed from this approach to artistic excellence.

After "discovering" Mr. Bolet from a recommendation of one of former students, Maestro Michael Ruiz in Chicago, I always turn to Jorge when I need a boost of energy for my spirit and to hear music as I think its meant to be played...with love, trust and as though the composer were over his shoulder...just listen to his Chopin... there is no better.

Thanks to RU-vid and people like Trevor, we can hear and see great artist like Jorge Bolet. I had the pleasure of see him live with my father. And indeed he was one of the greatest male pianist of 20th century, him, Arrau, Horowitz and I think 2 or 3 more. He was an unique and revolutionary pianist. Bravo Mr Bolet!!!!

I heard Bolet perform the Rachmaninoff 3rd at the Hollywood bowl many years ago. A serious, "down-to-earth' 'Pianist who invariably does service to the composer.
