SERGEY RACHMANINOV 1873--1943
Prélude, op.32 no.5 in G major Moderato 'a lost paradise'
A sticky and humid late summer afternoon, when hot air seems to tremble rising over ripening fields - only birds are able to pierce this thick air with their plaintive songs in anticipation of a thunderstorm -- finally this heavy air falls down to earth with drops of rain. This is not a dainty French or Italian landscape -- these are southern Russia wheat fields. This is Rachmaninoff's ancestral land - the land he never ceased to dream of from far away...

Goosebumps! This is the most beautiful prelude! Those 5 over 3 and 5 over 4 polyrhythms scare me though!!!

The way her wrists and hands hover so eloquently above the piano keys is a work of art in itself. This piece transports the listener to another realm. 😊

What a performance!!! Languid and passionate at the same time, but essentially as evanescent and transient as beauty itself.

She’s not hurried to “get on to the next thing”; not compelled by a thousand voices in her head telling her to “speed up” here, “slow down” there. The piece, or passage she’s playing “right now” is the most important music in the world. She takes us back to what music was for in the first place. I’ll never forget her playing of Fur Elise as an encore after a big concerto performance. The music she made with that hackneyed, student piece, made me fall in love with the piano all over again after a dry period. Playing like this, that with a deeply felt sense of the music’s beauty or energy or terror or whatever else of life a particular piece might be replicating, reminds us that we can do that same thing for people who listen to us play, no matter what our level, if we just let ourselves really love what we’re playing, play to our natural ability/circumstances (not JUST as fast, or quiet, etc. as the hottest current professional), and love the process of bringing it to a presentable level. Ahh, the king of the run-on sentence has run on again! Time to stop talking, and go hear more beautiful playing like this! Thanks Lisitsa Valentina!

@@coucou3233 I haven't heard all of Sergei rachmaninoff's music. Many years ago I discovered piano concertos by Beethoven and Mozart, and my local library had the complete Rachmaninoff piano concertos, which I listen to next and grew to love. They are still my favorites of his compositions. I don't care much for opera or singing in general, so I probably wouldn't care for his compositions in those genres.

Actually, both: RACHMANINOFF and RACHMANINOV - are correct, but the first form is older. For the letter 'F' in Russian language there's a letter 'Ф'. For 'V' the letter is 'B'. In Russian his name is written 'Рахманинов' - not 'РахманиноФ'!!! Hence, RACHMANINOV is more correct.

Dear +ValentinaLisitsa I have 2 questions QUESTION 1: What is the most effective way for you to practice awkward polyrhythms like 5 over 4? Do you practice single hands or do you just work it immediately off the cuff with both hands? (I guess the latter 😁) And then QUESTION TWO: Which method do you suggest to us mere mortals?
