philbestmusic.com/ As a fluent pianist, I work to find a proper grasp of the musical language of any piece I play. This prelude can easily sound dense, noisy and inaccessible, even in a solid technical performance with all the notes played accurately. In order to communicate its glorious, soaring, virtuoso, post-romantic story intelligibly, all intricate harmonies and contrapuntal lines must be clear and logical. Rachmaninov did not write atonally - there are no "wrong notes" in his music - but his very rich tonality (and rhythm too sometimes) can be extremely intricate and involved.

I think what makes this piece really compelling is its relationship to the other preludes. There's a lot of references to other preludes in this one, but perhaps the biggest reference of them all is the way this piece is essentially a parallel major "mirror" to the first prelude, in C-sharp minor. Play them back to back and it becomes obvious this is the "answer" to prelude op 3 no 2.

Phil, I love how you play etude no. 13! I like your playing a lot because it's tasteful and not overdone. I always appreciate it when people can do that, not inserting themselves too much into the music, letting the music flow through oneself rather than inserting oneself into the music. Also... I should mention that my username "Opus 32" is actually because of this set of preludes! I play a couple excerpts in this set. No 10 and No 5 are the ones that absolutely wreck me, but I love the set dearly. I have a "work in progress" pianoteq sound, I am thinking that it's in the range of potentially rivalling some of Pianoteq's best sounds, but you know how you get an ear for something you hear on your own. It's now become my favorite sound and it's a morph of three non-Steinway pianos, but what came out of it sounds a lot like a Steinway (which I think is testament to Steinway's versatility, you know, you can play Ravel, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt, etc. and it all sounds like it was the instrument that the music was composed for). This preset is a work in progress, but I am more or less doing my best to just try to find the perfect sound because it's an endlessly enjoyable task for me. Anyways... I'd love to hear what you think of this one I made, more or less it's my attempt to emulate Steinways that I've played that really feel like they have a lot of character to them: soundcloud.com/alkan23/set-of-excerpts forum.modartt.com/viewtopic.php?id=8825 I actually made this preset because some of the more modern pianoteq sounds having too many metallic overtones or sound a little flat. I really need to upgrade to Pro already... can't believe I haven't done that yet. Lol. I keep running into the problem where some ranges respond well to certain adjustments better than others, so I definitely need note edit on everything..... Anyways, good stuff. I love watching your vids and having the odd conversation. EDIT: Spent more time on it and now it sounds like this: soundcloud.com/alkan23/set-of-excerpts-steinway

Thanks very much! I do like the way your piano sounds, very warm. But of course, that's also the pianist - you're making those warm, rich tones!

Wonderful performance. I always watch your videos, not only because of how you play but also how you can talk about music. It sounds almost like poetry 😃. By the way, I also have Pianoteq and the same speakers as you, though I prefer Bechstein and Steingraber - I know you like Steinway. I remember when you talked about different pianos in Pianoteq - the words you used to describe sound almost made me hear it 😄 - of course, I did hear the sounds when you demonstrated it. Your videos made me buy all the pianos in Pianoteq (I have the stage version), except YC5, which I don't especially like. Anyway, I have a question: what software and hardware do you use for turning pages on your screen? I'm looking for something good now. Best wishes to you, Piotr.

Thanks Piotr! I just use a standard usb footswitch. I've had it so long, I don't know the make/model and it's probably not available any longer. I just searched an there's a company called Ikkegol that make them. My software is a standard PDF reading app called Xodo.

I know it need dedication, but I dream to play half as good as you. But time is lacking... Maybe at least 1h per day or 3 times per week... Who knows... But I must say, it was a great sensation to hear you playing, and I know. When we are playing, the sensation is 100 times stronger. Please keep sharing your playing. its great for the ears and the soul.

It is great to hear your comments and your expanations. I wonder whether a proper tutorial exists on this prelude, mainly on the tricky time signatures. I also notice the software turns pages as you play along, how does this work?

Thanks for your comment. It's such a difficult and complicated piece, the few people who have the advanced skills necessary to play it would have little need of a RU-vid how-to-play-it tutorial. My page turner is a simple foot switch that I found online somwhere ages ago: it works like a mouse with left/right click buttons.

Great playing but far slower than I'm used to. Perhaps that's why so many recordings turn to mush. I love this one and the final prelude of Opus 23. Both have a kind of finality.

Hi Phil, Chris from Lincoln UK here. Beautiful music. Thank you. I love Rachmaninoff. May I ask whether you are able to get the same response from Pianoteq from all your PHA50 equipped instruments? The FP90, RD2000 and your upright??? I ask because I am thinking of purchasing either the FP90X or the RD2000 and want to know if there is any difference in feel between these two slab type pianos as compared to you upright which you get such beautiful sounds from in your videos. Any help would be greatfuly received Phil. Thank you. And thanks again for the beautiful playing. Warmest regards, Chris

Thanks Chris. No I don't find that they feel completely identical: I enjoy playing all 3 very much but my favourite one to play is my HP605. I suspect this is because of the solidity of the entire structure rather than being due to any variations in the action. I always loved playing my V-Piano for the same reason (I still do): it's big and heavy and sits on a solid stand. This does make a discernable difference. The weight of both the RD2000 and FP90X is fairly decent (around 20kg) so if they sit solidly on a sturdy (wobble-free) stand they do feel very piano-like.

Can I ask a Question? In the PlayPianoFluently course, do we still need to sight read tons of pieces from sheet music books until we become fluent in sight reading music? Just Curious That's All Thanks :)
@PhilBestMusic
@PhilBestMusic 2 года назад
You're afraid that it's lots of boring work, right? Well you need to practise anything to become good at it but fluent sight-reading is not a boring trudge like the passive form of it. When you're a fluent, reading scores is enjoyable.

Hello There :) Can I ask a Question regarding on PlayPianoFluently Course? Why is the Legacy Course is expensive than the core course files? What is the difference between the two of these? That's All Thank You :) Keep Safe, God Bless You and Your Talent and Keep Up The Good Work :) Sorry for asking many questions Just curious
@PhilBestMusic
@PhilBestMusic 2 года назад
The price difference is small. The legacy course is the old fixed format. The new structure means I can add new practice materials as I invent them. I prefer it! I just kept the legacy course for people who had already started it and wanted to continue with that format.

@PhilBestMusic

Thanks! It's how many DPs are designed these days. I chose it because it's a plain, neutral design. I wish there were more beautiful designs for pianos, as we have for guitars, but I guess market forces prevent this.

Can I ask a Question? It is possible to play complex genres of music such as classical and jass just by ear without special gifts or talents like Photographic/Audiographic Memory, Perfect Pitch, and Color Tone Synesthesia?

I am so much amazed on how you perform piano pieces through sight reading :) Can I ask a Question? How you and your PlayPianoFluently students practice sight reading? Is it same as continuing reading music through tons of sheet music books?
@PhilBestMusic
@PhilBestMusic 2 года назад
I do have this piece memorised - I'd struggle to sight-read it at that speed! The score is there just to help me remember all the details! Conventional reading involves processing separate notes carrying pitch and time values. It is slow not fluent. No amount of practice doing this will lead to fluency. I teach people to recognised shapes or patterns of tonality and rhythm. This is fast and fluent - i.e. you look at a sore and instantly imagine the music playing.
@lshwadchuck5643
@lshwadchuck5643 2 года назад
Maybe just myself, but hitting a point with playing by decoding sheet music where you absolutely know this is not leading to fluency - that's when you're ready to open your mind to Phil's model. It works.
