The difficulty in this piece is keeping the instrumental groups distinct and definite, while also managing the dynamics. This orchestra and the conductor do an excellent work here.

this is the best version so far. I heard some versions. Congratulation for this outstanding performance. I like they playing a bit faster then others. I hope ill have the chance to hear this live in my life.

Certainly, one of the most beautiful works for orchestra!

This performance is really an excellent interpretation of a very deeply and profoundly spiritual piece of music. It becomes transcenental. Well, Singapore has elements which are more than just money. This is a performence of interior riches.

One of my favourite Rachmaninov pieces for orchestra, the energy from all is fantastic. I do enjoy though close ups of the players concentrating on their parts, and seeing some of these pretty instruments is eye candy for an instrumentalist/composer such as I am :-) Nice performance! Bravo!

Really excellent performance of the Singapore Symphony, both technically and in the intrinsically complicated demands of this score. It shows their maturity as a group, since they probably rehearsed a few hours before the concert at the Philarmonie. Maestro Shui knows the piece hands down.

I think they had rehearsed for a few months before the concert, not hours :)

One of my favorites from Rachaminoff. When listening to it while looking at the painting that was his inspiration for writing the piece, it's a perfect representation in my opinion. A beautiful work for orchestra.

A bit too fast for my taste, but still beautifully dark. Also it's fun how the string players make "waves" when seen from afar.

Terrific performance of such a powerful ,dark, imaginative and totally captivating creation. By the way, did Rachmaninov compose anything in the major key?

A lot of his solo piano works, and certain movements in his symphonies and concertos. Actually it's a tough question, because even in the isle of the dead there are sections of Major tonality. While a piece may be mainly written in a certain key, Rachmaninoff plays with modulation and tonality, so you get everything

I believe it mostly should come from the sound engineer . Because nowadays there are not much educated sound engineers. One of them I believe is in this.

If it's meant seriously check his piano preludes, etudes tableaux and probably many many others ;-)

For much of the first half it seems as though the conductor is making a valiant attempt to channel Rachmaninov's own conducting of this piece, but then he rushes quite startlingly at the big buildup around the 8 minute mark, and that's too bad.
