Here I have made up a few clips of the once very busy Kimberley to De Aar railway in South Africa. The large 25NC 4-8-4s were the mainstay of the steam fleet that worked both goods and passenger trains on this fast section but as you will see there are a few other classes also.
Al these clips were taken by my good friend Ron Cousins who I sadly lost contact with when steam ended in Kimberley in 1992. I have been unable to ever contact him again and so rather than his clips lay around in my box I decided to let the world see what steam was all about on this once wonderful famous mainline.
Ron, if you do get to see these clips then please contact me.
Unfortunately the clips have become rather worn and the picture is not great but at least the sound is still good so turn up the volume and listen to that beat!!

Enjoyable memorable footage 👍 Red Devil has been restored-- standing in Cape Town near Royal Cape Yacht Club and visible from N1

Must be nothing on earth more exhilarating than speeding over the open countryside with a full head of steam.

I remember your pa Attie in De Aar. He was on diesels by the time these clips were used as far as I remember. Say hi to him from the Souties (John Gilberthorpe & Richard Niven)

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad she still exists albeit in limbo. Here's hoping for a brighter future, she deserves better.

The Red Devil is at present standing in the platforms at Cape Town station. Lucky for her there is a steam group (Atlantic Rail) who operate a class 24 out of there and they are keeping a close eye on her and holding back the metal thieves. If it was not for them, Red Devil and the other few remaining locos there in the station would i'm sure have been scrapped by now as South African Railways own them and have no interest at all in steam.

Wonder if Attie Koen was one of the drivers. He is my dad and we used to live in De Aar. He always talk about the good time when he talks about the steam train part of his life. Thanks!

I think Spoornet's Px 6 tonne sub container service was a great idea and still has a place on rail

Absolutely amazing!!!! Some of the best 25NC 26 Footage. I can't see the 24 clip you were talking about in your Facebook description of the clip - what number is it at?
