No worries…I was actually one of those who collapsed on the hill. I spent the weekend in the hospital…I live here and run those roads every day in this heat (we ran right past my apartment!) and it was a rough day out there!
Oof, I'm so sorry! I had to quit... I was having some sort of crazy muscle spasms on my right side... I was a Party in the Back walker, so I walked through all that rain and StILL had to quit! I'm back for redemption in two weeks!
If the heat and humidity kick in, even a January day in Florida can be tough to run in. To hang on to 6th while suffering through the second half of the race with 6 racers finishing within a minute back of you is an impressive feat.
How bad is the humidity in January? I sign up for a race that in January next year but it's in Lakeland Florida. It a 100 miler so trying to figure out if I should go easy in the middle of the day and go fast early In the morning and at night .
@Dewknow it comes down to luck. You might get a perfect cool running day. Or you might get 80 degree temps with over 50% humidity. Check the weather forecasts in the days before and even the hours before the start and plan accordingly. If you're coming from a cold dry area, be prepared for any heat or humidity to affect you more than you would expect.
This was my second time running the Gate River Run, and I was disappointed I was 2 minutes slower than last year even though I've been more serious in my training. The heat was horrible! They said it was the hottest start time on record for this race. Florida weather is always a surprise. Hopefully you'll be back in the future! I was hoping to be able to say hi. Incredible job pushing through it Allie!!!
I train in florida and was out there racing and I gotta say that was brutal! Felt pretty shitty at around halfway and ran considerably slower than anticipated. All about effort on those kinda days, great job!
Great race Allie, I was there too and the humidity was suffocating especially after the 1st 5K. Everyone I spoke with afterwards said their times were on average 2-3 minutes slower than previous year. Banger vid! Hope to see you back next year and take the win!
Allie, great race, keep in mind as I am sure you already are aware of, all the times were slower than what was expected. The heat and humidity are really tough to overcome especially when coming from the Pacific northwest, way too much of a temperature change. Also when nobody passes you in a race that is a positive thing to build on......best regards.
So proud Allie, mentally you displayed great fortitude, hot and humid conditions, physically you finished 6th despite the green monster!! You deserve CONGRATULATIONS!! You did great!!
Sixth place on not a great day is very commendable. Just love Allie's ability to be herself - articulate, funny, conversational - in front of the camera.
Awesome recap! I love the play by play or should I say mile by mile narrative. So many races I feel like dying when I’m racing but when it’s over I almost forget how hard I was pushing and just think I could do better. I love how you are honest about how hard it was in the moment in your analysis. Also , so impressed with your time and result. That is amazingly fast!
Congratulations! An outstanding race considering it's your first one in a while. Your mental toughness and physical training pulled you through. Keep it going!
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. You are crushing it and only getting better... Someday when you retire I think you would make an amazing track coach.
Great recap. I enjoy your style. I think Normal made a great decision in having you represent them. Florida humidity is oppressive even in March. I look forward to seeing your trail races! Congrats!
WOW Congrats for finishing you did awesome!! Even though it was tough mentally and physically you still gave it your all and toughed it out to the finish congrats!!! Also congrats on conquering that hill :)
Well done, surviving is always Goal 1. Heat, humidity, and travel always makes for a tough combo. Fun to watch the whole process and now looking forward to your next training block and race.
My husband and I ran too and said the same thing about the conditions, just very unlucky. It was brutal. I was just happy to finish top 10% and not go to the hospital. Been loving watching your vlogs! Looking forward to your next race. Congrats on 6th, that's a big accomplishment.
Hi Allie good morning happy Tuesday morning and I hope you having amazing day today and I loved your vlogs and you are amazing Supporter and I'm proud of you
Welcome to Florida, where Summer can happen just about any day of the year. The news said it was one of the hottest Gate River Runs on record, maybe the hottest ever. Pretty sure there was a boatload of racers who thought they'd do better. If it's any consolation, as someone who was born and raised in West Central Florida and has lived here for all of my 70 years, I also ran 20 seconds per mile slower than expected in my 5k Saturday. 🙂 You can see in the race video as the men were coming through, there was a pack of eight girls right on your tail. Without your determination and perseverance, you may have lost all 8 of those positions. Instead you held strong. Job very well done! Just FYI, the morning low in Jax this coming Saturday is forecast to be in the upper 50's.
I’ve done this race 11 times now and finish in the top %10 but never have I seen so many elite runners laid out along the route. I saw one elite male out around mile 4. The Florida humidity kills the out of towners but this year it was on another level. Last year there were gusts of 50mph recorded on the bridge with 30mph sustained. You never know what you are going to get at this race.
Well done Allie. Loving these videos where you mix lots of stuff up. Race seemed really tough but the main thing as you say is that you stuck it out. We are all rooting for you. Onward and upward! PS you didn’t mention you were sixth out of about 6,000!
Allie - You did wonderfully! Humidity and proper diet affect me a lot in my running, too. You are improving, and sixth place will someday turn into first place with time and training. Best wishes!
You did amazing! 15ks are long! I think feeling bad around 4 miles may have due been a few things: You're used to racing 5ks and shorter, so you may need to adjust your long runs to have workouts in them during a training block for something longer; this sets you up for a race that isn't over shortly after it gets really hard. And then, even though you're racing for under an hour, fueling with plenty of electrolytes in the days before, and perhaps a small carbo-load as well could help. Looking forward to your future races!
Great job! Its was tough for alot of people. I had a hard time after the 5k as well. I was trying to find you before the race but couldnt find you. I did manage to see you on your cooldown which was cool. Great job! Good luck on your next adventure!
That's brilliant. Two places I've really struggled to run are at altitude.. and in Florida! Love the way they managed to include an uphill section for you all in a state known for being relatively flat. Great result.
Amazing performance, Allie O. You powered through that 15k even though it was hard. Sixth place is great for your inaugural USATF 15K Championship Race.
Congrats Allie!! You should be so proud of yourself because it is NOT easy to keep grinding and fighting when you know you aren’t having your best day! Big things coming for you!
Great effort! Race morning was rough conditions, even for us Floridians who are used to it. And yeah, the Green Monster at the end is always so hard. Way to hang tough! I was in a group on a street corner who yelled, “Go Allie” right before the mile 5 marker. BTW most of the pros were looking like they were deep in a sufferfest by that point
You did great for a rust buster. I raced in Atlanta the week before, after a red-eye flight from Seattle, and faced 3 difficulties: hills, humidity, and the time change. Of these, I think the jet lag was the biggest factor. That draggy feeling you had after 4 miles was probably in large part attributable to your body feeling like it should still be asleep for a couple more hours. Congrats on a great effort and solid result.
Great race! Did the race in 2021 and it was really cold. Weird weather. That hill at mile 8 for me was brutal because there was this ferocious headwind that day and it was so bad at the top of the bridge that I felt like I was going backwards.
What a great run for your first race over 10Km! I lol at you telling the medical staff "No, I am fine I just need a little nap'. I had a similar experience many years ago at the Silver State marathon. Finished third overall, but looked like a mess (5000' altitude, heat wind, being old, etc.) Medical staff wanted to immediately to hook me up to IVs and stick me in the ambulance. I was like, nope please just give me a few to recover. Can't wait for your next adventure.
How cool is that Allie! I was almost shocked to see you raced the 15K but that is hands down very impressive! WAY different from the 5K or Steeple but having this distance under your belt and running in those conditions should give you some mad confidence for the rest of the season. Go NNormal!
the humidity play a big role, i am from florida and that humidity really creeped in that race. like you i felt great after 5k then i was too confident and decide to pick up the next 5k. brilliant race on your part this was a very tough race.
Allie I lived in Indiana for 34 years until getting married and moving to FL. (Wife is from central FL) This summer will be 19 years of living here and I still cant stand FL about 8 months out of the year. Humidity drives me crazy and I just so look forward to the few months when it goes away for the most part. FL is an awesome place in the winter. But this year temps have been close to record breaking for Feb and so far March has been pretty hot as well which you unfortunately experienced. So yeah with Alaska as the place you grew up and now living in Seattle I'm just glad you survived the humidity during that race. Had to be really tough. Sounds like you gritted it out like a true pro and held your position well. Great job! So happy for you with the sponsorship and will keep an eye for coming races. You are a class act and funny to boot.. I hope things are going great for you, Spencer, Georgie and the whole Seattle gang. You all formed a really cool motley crew of friends.. Be safe and keep enjoying life.
I think you did awsome Allie the run in warm weather and humid weather like that, outstanding job. Thank you for sharing clips of the race with us . I hope you had a chance to recover have a wonderful week, I also hope you had some time to go beach in florida after the race and take sometime for your self as well.
You have to be proud of yourself I know from where you were or what your mind is thinking it wasn’t the race you wanted but it’s been so long since you actually got out there and really raced so so proud of you and the Florida got all that rust off you it’s going to be fine seeing you excel the rest of this year and next👍😍
Way to go Allie! I was really looking forward to this video as I ran this race too after you reminded me the event was occurring a weekend I was in town. It was brutal for me as well and I can confirm I passed multiple people floored on the last bridge getting medical attention. I thought training in CO would have prepared me better for that final push and uphill but I still heaved as soon as I crossed the finish line 😂 I don’t remember the last time I ran over 7 miles but I stuck it out and finished 45th for my age and gender so I’m pleased with that and my overall effort. Looking forward to tuning in on your future races!
That's the first time I've seen a bridge with a hill that looked more like a mountain road. It even had switchbacks! Great job on 6th place! That's a good place to be for now and only upwards from here!
You did really well Allie all things considered- despite not feeling your best- you ground it out. Most of the other girls around you have "raced" so much more in recent times- which is a huge advantage. You've got a great platform to work off... The only way is up... and 6th out of over 6000 is pretty darn good lol ;)
Congratulations on your race. It's so cool that you are with NNormal. I had to laugh at the comment about hills, you the conqueror of Mt Marathon worrying about hills. Train with Killian a while longer, and you could be the first woman to finish the Barkley Marathons.
Wow, great job. 15K is way too long for what I enjoy running. I was a 4-8 guy in college so converting to 5K's now is an accomplishment for me. Keep up the awesome work. You should be proud that you performed so well on your first ever competitive race over 10K
Congratulations on sixth - sounded like a really tough race. I live in Scotland and complain about how warm I think it is here when we get our 1 week of summer, you have my respect for running in warm Florida!
Congrats on grinding through the finish. That’s super tough… the bricks feeling happens to me when I overheat and my body can no longer cool itself efficiently enough. Every step starts to feel like a battle of not slowing down or stopping.
You raced well. Yes, it is important to know the course and weather conditions, etc. It says a lot to not get passed. (I have gotta lotta stories...) {The weather has hurt me this year. We have had it 88*F at least and freezing with ice on the ground. And I did too many indoor miles... Today, it's 80*/27* and it's hot enough.}
