I was invited by Team Obsolete to race the 1974 spec MV Agusta 500 four at the USCRA North American Vintage Invitational race during the Moto America race weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park. TO rider Dave Roper rode the Dick Mann BSA triple.
The MV has an absolutely amazing motor and great handling- this bike had not been raced before, only paraded so it had some ergonomic things to work out; it was eating some improper clutch plates, a shift lever meant for a tiny Italian made downshifts tricky and a few other things which are easy to fix back at the shop. The bike was a bit tricky to ride, it stalls at the drop of a hat with almost no crank effect. I had not seen this track before and I only had a single practice session before we had to race, I did lead the first few laps here but I believe Dave was sand bagging it a bit, he went on to win. I faded later in the race as I had more difficulty with the shifting. Great experience, hopefully we can bring it out again at a track I know!
Big thanks to Team Obsolete and Rob Iannucci.

Great footage, what a KICK to be able to do that, thanks so much for sharing. (old timer here, got my first Norton in 1970 when I was released from the Navy)

I made the mistake of firing it up once without my earplugs in; I think my ears are still ringing...!

Todays MV Agusta shares nothing but the name of the company that designed and made this particular MV, in fact they are not even Italian, the guys that were involved were Mario Rossi and draftsman Enrico Sironi-with more recent ideas later imported by an engineer with auto racing experience-Giuseppe Bocchi. The published specs are 92-93 bhp at 14,000 rpm so the revs used on this bike seem a little conservative but then again there could be some sympathetic limitations unless of course it is one of the Mark Kay replicas in which case why limit it to 11,000 rpm.

I 've seen them, and heard , at Francorchamps , still the old track from 14.5 km long. There they made more than 14000 rpm. That was the real sound I will never forget and what's never to come again. Fully understandable that the engine now is not allowed to full rpm.

Well, when I am handed a $250,000 bike and told not to crash or over rev it, I try to behave myself. Next week I am going to be taking out the 1967 MV 350 triple at Mosport, should be interesting...

Love the banjo fitting on the master cylinder.Also the blipping changing down.So old school.Was it slightly undergeared or was the redline very conservative?
@peterg2yt
@peterg2yt 5 лет назад
Well spotted. I know that peak power on this engine is at 12,000 you can see that its not the right rev-counter for the bike... The factory bike tacho read to 14,000. Very good idea not to use those revs on an old engine!
@DouglasLMacRae
@DouglasLMacRae 5 лет назад
There were some tricky issues I was having with the bike, apart from the obvious clutch problems, it had skinny shoulderless retro throttle handgrip that made proper throttle blipping difficult and a crazy small gear lever that I could not get my foot under for correct downshifts. I also only had only two practice sessions on a track I had never seen on a bike I had never ridden so was much more conservative than I normally am. I was also asked to please not blow up this hideously valuable motorcycle which was geared short if anything. I will be taking this bike out again in Canada this summer, either Shannonville or Mosport thanks to Team Obsolete.

This is a fantastic little film, loved it! I thought it seamed undergeared,also, I guess you just keep revs in check, if I watched the rev counter I'd end up on the grass,an all that, great to see these running team obsolete,well done to them, hope the gear lever is bigger, an clutch less grabby? Was that causing head to shake slightly?. On my old MVs road bikes, I use to cut biro pens an tape em to throttle grip, then as I graduated got 6mm alloy tube with red Italian bicycle hessian handlebar tape. Strapped at the just off flat out position, straight out ahead under your grip,with bumps the throttle was just shutting down unbeknown to me,a little,why are we slowing down I use to think. I'm surprised these beautiful old racers that they don't have ribbed grips. It is not a complaint great job rideing lovely to hear and see them.!

Ahhhh......the most blood curdling sound of them all on full chat and on the overrun. Saw Phil Read many times back in the day giving it some stick. While it's great to see and hear them today, due to their age, value and total lack of spares they can't be fully wound on. In a proper race they probably never got lower than 10k.....which is what this bike is red lined at now; barely getting into the power band. Amazingly Phil never seems to get any invites to ride these originals at festivals, which is a shame. He did get a reputation for being unpopular so that may be why. Even Ago had to get some triples copied so he could get regular rides. What's happened to Umberto Elle's comprehensive stable of genuine ex works MV's of every description since he passed. Don't know where he went, as he was already in heaven?

Is it true that MV based this on the Gilera?
@DouglasLMacRae
@DouglasLMacRae 4 года назад
I don't know but they are extremely similar...!
@keebone
@keebone 3 года назад
No, the original 50s - 60s MV 500/4 was designed by the same man who designed the Gilera 500/4 and had much in common. This 70s 500/4 that Phil Read won 2 world championships on was a new design brought in to replace the 500/3 Ago had used.
@xvdd1
@xvdd1 3 года назад
The early MV's did use the Rondine design as did Gilera incredibly Piero Taruffi designed it in 1935 although it was watercooled and supercharged then but because of FIM restrictions supercharging was not allowed on GP machines after the war, as in all things in racing MV had to move on with engine design to remain competitive but ultimately could not compete with the two stroke.
@TimGibbons56
@TimGibbons56 6 лет назад
how did you do in the race.
@DouglasLMacRae
@DouglasLMacRae 6 лет назад
I led the first couple laps but started to fade as I had real problems downshifting the bike- it was never raced before and had been fitted with a tiny short lever that I could not get my foot properly under and when you don't give it a good click, it finds a false neutral and is hard to find gear again. At one point I was rolling through turn one doing about 10 mph frantically trying to get it into gear before it finally went in... This will be easily fixed with a proper lever if I can talk TO into bringing it out again. This was a demonstration race so they did not score it and I could not tell you where I actually finished.
