Thank you for showing how you can connect the lego racks to the mindstorm beams! Our team's mind was BLOWN! They are excited to try new ways to use this knowledge! -The GyroManiacs
@@ZacharyTrautwein We are a Michigan based team of 5th graders. They just finished their virtual competition for regionals, but now they are on the prowl for ways to improve their runs to squeeze in a few more points for states! Your channel has been super helpful to me as a non-technical person trying to stay a step ahead of the kids! Thank you for all the hard work you put into making the videos! You've made a HUGE difference to our team!
Thank you Zachary. This is great. I am a new FLL coach and not much of an engineer. This really helped me understand how I can get the power of the motor down low, to move the rack/pinion up high. We will be reviewing this with our team this afternoon.
Thank you so much for making this tubular video. It was fantastic, and we built a similar thing for our robot thanks to you. - Cookies and Milk FLL team
Very impressive job of design, and engineering. Also, excellent job of explaining each step clearly so it was possible to make it by watching the video. I'm curious what your background is and how long it took you to figure out how to make the fork lift from concept to final product. There were only a couple of things I had to modify. I didn't have the grey pegs (one and a half) for the rack pieces so I used the blue ones (one and a quarter ) I had in my Spike Prime Kit, so there was a too much slop between the rack and the channel. Luckily, I was able to find a slightly larger gear from a LEGO kit I have from twenty years ago and that solved the problem. Also had to use a crown gear I had for the bottom to get it to work with my robot. p.s. In case you don't already know, LEGO calls the 3 x 3 black thing a "biscuit".
Glad you were able to make it work with your robot and situation! To satisfy your curiosity, I'm simply a FIRST alum who grew up in the FIRST ecosystem with LEGO mindstorms surrounding me from a very young age! Super blessed to have had the upbringing that I've had!
Hi Zach Thanks for providing a great rack and pinion assembly. At the 19:35min mark you discuss using a black half axle/majority axle peg. We don't have those in our general kit. Can this be substituted with another part? I think it is a unique part since the black majority axle side is longer than the clip side. The blue half axle is not long enough. Could you please provide the black majority axle part number?
So those pieces are a part of the SPIKE Prime kits. However... you could get some here: www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-black-axle-2l-with-friction-pin-18651
Thanks a lot for the video! Is it because Spike's black gear rack too short and blocked at the ends, that's why WeDo's white gear rack is chosen? (Also when I use Spike's black gear rack, I can't get it to move up and down smoothly. it keeps having weird clicking sound where it contacts the gear wheel and stops very frequently.) Thanks.
Yup, that’s exactly why I chose them! If you have a few extra dollars I would get some WeDo racks. Super worth it!! I think the continuous rack would help ya out!
I made this attachment and put it onto my robot which is the one you are using, it will not go straight because of how heavy it is. what do you suggest i do?
I also like your videos! keep it up! Just wondering if you can find time to answer. I have 1 spike prime set and all your build needs the expansion set. Should i get 1 more spike prime set or get the new mindstorm 51515. thanks!
My understanding is that the hub is a bit different between the two kits. I get nervous that FIRST may not like that it’s not an educational kit’s hub. Although the pieces in the kits themselves seem very similar.
Zackary, good morning. I'm trying to build the Rack and Pinion but my Spike set has only 2 racks. Is there a way for me to get more? where? We are a School team in Dallas, TX and getting into the NTX Regional. Could you please help us? All my students love your videos. Very informative for all!!! Thanks
Hi! Double check you are using the correct pegs. They are 3/4 pegs: www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=32002&idColor=10#T=S&C=10&O=%7B%22color%22:10,%22iconly%22:0%7D
Hi! Well, I would double check your pegs connecting the racks to the beams. They are a special kind of peg, I think they are 1 and 3/4 pegs. There is a link in the description of the vid! Other than that I would just experiment with it until it’s solid!
I have made this very small modification to get a sturdy link between the two upper gears ; motor is runing at full speed on the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-whjH69cEg7k.html
