Radar Men from the Moon (1952 TV Movie Clip) Vintage Science Fiction Television

Its interesting that so many pre-Apollo imagined trips to the moon included a female co-pilot, with Dale Arden from Flash Gordon being the typical fly-girl, loyal to her man, physically vulnerable, and yet technically capable of making calculations on the rocket ship. Anyways, enjoy this short clip from the pilot of a short-lived TV show, Radar Men from the Moon.

As a kid I watched this series before the kiddie matinee at the (army) post movie theater where my dad was stationed. We kids watched in awe, cheered and gasped during each episode. What precious memories.

Wow, I love the sexual equality when they jump out of the car, one guy says he doesn't think "a woman" should be going along, and her rebuttal is "you'll be glad that someone is coming along that can cook your meals!" You tell him, sister!

Yup that’s 50’s sci fi. Casual sexism, long winded exposition, and maybe they all run from an alien or something by the end of act three.

@@JOEY-xj4ds Not sexism, these are the traditional gender roles, where only men do the dangerous things, and women are kept away from danger because after all they're the ones who bear and raise the children, feminism is just women wanting to be more like men, which is fair enough, but I don't see this man as evil just because he lived in a culture that valued the traditional gender roles.

@@pneumonoultramicroscopicsi4065 come on, it’s silly. If they wanted to keep her out of danger they wouldn’t be taking her off world in a rocket ship.

If it wasn’t for these classic serials, we’d have no Indiana Jones or Star Wars. You can definitely see the influences!

I was born in 1953, and while I have heard of Radar Men From the Moon, I'd never seen it that I recall. I am highly impressed with the special effects, given the time. Well, the moving ship and the flying guy. The inside of the spaceship was at least as cheesy as any other period piece of this ilk. Thanks so much for posting this - I'd love to see more!

And speaking of Star Trek, William Shatner (the actor behind Captain J. T. Kirk) did a spoken-word cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)" which, in the original EJ form, owes some debt to David Bowie's 1969/1973 hit "Space Oddity."

By 1952 this got to be a homage to old Flash Gordon rocket ships or they would have something more modern looking.

1952?!!! Isn't that the same space ship, (and dialog, "Set course to the moon"), that Buck Rogers used 20 years earlier? Sheesh!
