Glad you mentioned prices outside the US. Prices in Europe make no sense either. Good AIB models for both cost the same: ~575-600 Euros. Almost seems like the 7800 XT is being intentionally overpriced by the sellers since it is expected to sell well.

I would have preferred 4070 just because of the power efficiency. I have noticed that it consumes literally 40-50% more power while performing similarly. Electricity Bills will just coverup the additional proce of 4070 in 3-4 months. But maybe in the long run the 16GB Vram will be much helpful but 4070's DLSS 3.5 is next level.

Just trying to make a point that there is a market for these GPUs and while there are downsides to Radeon there are plenty of downsides to GeForce as-well such as Micron memory on 20 series cards, crippling vram limitations as cards age compared to Radeon counterparts, GTX 970 “4gb” of vram, etc. I have not used chill or boost so I can’t comment but anti lag feels great in GPU limited scenarios. I've seen a lot of people argue about the 7800xt vs. the 4070, saying that one is obviously much better then the other until some realized that they had completely different ideas about the price of both cards since local pricing is all over the place. This is why it's important to look into what GPUs you can get where you live in your desired price range and then look at reviews and benchmarks of those GPUs to determine which one is the best for you.

@TakumisBizarreRacingAdventure
@TakumisBizarreRacingAdventure 9 месяцев назад
I'm incorrect. If you are CPU bottlenecked then it will give the same fps because your CPU cannot send enough frames to the GPU for rendering to begin with. You see what I mean? If the GPU cannot render the frames fast enough then the CPU will quickly finish its work and wait idle. Same goes vice versa. If CPU cannot keep pace with GPU then GPU will render whatever workload it has been given and then sit idle until more work is given. That's why when testing GPUs, reviewers do not use weak CPUs, or even mid range CPUs. Because if your CPU can only give 40 frames to the GPU for rendering, the GPU will just sit idle after finishing 40 frames. Meaning both Nvidia and AMD cards will give 40 frames.

@@TakumisBizarreRacingAdventure this is a completely incorrect understanding of how CPUs work. There is no static "40 frames", it's a CPU that works in conjunction with a GPU and the rest of the PC to try run your game smoothly. Drivers are a specialized form of software. Lighter software puts less demand on the CPU. If your CPU is maxed out, you are likely taking a performance hit as your system is now CPU bottlenecked. HUB, Daniel Owens, and many others have already benchmarked and shown that Nvidia drivers do indeed use more CPU due to driver overhead since the software that actually drives the AMD/Nvidia GPU is quite different.

Great summary and overview of both cards! I'm wondering if the lower stock of the 7800 XT is both a marketing and PR ploy by limiting launch availability of the 7800 XT compared to the 7700 XT at only $50 less. They get the PR of a sold out of the higher tier card on launch day, better performance to their price-comparable alternative from Nvidia, while also providing a 'reasonable' alternative with the more plentiful 7700XT. That being said, at $50-100 more for a 4070, this is entirely on Nvidia with their mid-tier pricing.

Starfield being AMD sponsored will likely have nothing to do with nvidia's lackluster performance. More to do with the high CPU usage. Much like tessellation used to cripple AMD. Hogwartz legacy and Cyberpunk, and jedi survivor are also CPU demanding titles aswell. Lo and behold, same discrepancy... Assassin's creed valhalla has GPU geometry shaders, resulting in 100K+ drawcalls per second. No doubt the Nvidia driver absolutely flatlines here. So it would be nice if the game's perfomance would be explained technically, instead of based on team green or red, like something nefarious is going on...
@jontyhood

I mean… Look at how intel had no access to the game and thus it’s driver was (and still kind of is) broken at launch. This isn’t a team red vs team green debacle, just that game exclusivity seems to hinder driver development from the other vendors, a bad thing for all gamers (see Portal RTX, nvidia partner). So there’s definitely more too it I reckon.

@@Tracenji You dont just magically sprinkle optimization dust onto a game dude. It all depends on what is being displayed. The Havok engine is quite capable with respects to physics simulation, go check some video's with people memeing milk cartons everywhere. Secondly, if there is a lot of geometry, there will be a lot of drawcalls to throughput which is notoriously a weak point of Nvidia. If you look at Assassin's creed valhalla, that uses the GPU to compute the geometry, but it results in the CPU having to create very small drawcalls for each of them, and it can run into 100K+ drawcalls. Which INCREASE with resolution. Hence at 4K, the 7800XT absolutely annihilates the Nvidia GPU which has to do all these drawcalls through their clunky driver with no hardware support. Especially if the calculations are interdependent its difficult to multithread. And high CPU load just cripples Nvidia at the moment. All the games it does particularly poorly in, in this test are all high CPU load games. (open world, lots of calculations, physics, geometry, AI etc).

I see that the Australian pricing has the RTX 4070 and the RX 7800 XT evenly matched as well. IN South Korea, this is also the case with the price gap of the cheapest of each being just 10,000 won (about $7.53). The weak price-to-performance argument for the RX 7800 XT is made even weaker when factoring that some popular online games in South Korea, such as PUBG, tend to perform noticeably worse on AMD GPUs. Needless to say, AMD GPUs are still having a rough time here.

I would argue that you don't really _need_ the extra performance in lighter titles like pubg where you'll be getting something like over 200fps either way. But it's indeed tough to justify a 7800XT at the same price point as the 4070, because the 4GB of extra VRAM isn't a whole lot, and that's its main selling point.
@rustler08
@rustler08 9 месяцев назад
@@leonro First off, that "JUST" 4GB more is 33% more VRAM, which is not a statically insignificant amount. Second, that 4GB of extra VRAM can and will be the difference between a choppy, horribly unstable FPS experience and one where you have to lower settings because NVIDIA cheaped out on that not "a whole lot". This isn't a 1080P card with excess VRAM like the 3060 12GB was. @@rustler08 Mate, my current GPU is an RX 6800. It's "just" 4GB because 12GB will likely be enough for good a while to set any game at max settings, or at the very least close to it. It's not the same massive difference as when Nvidia had an 8GB 3070 (Ti as well) and a 10GB 3080 going against 16GB AMD cards. And that was at a time when 8GB was already close to being maxed out in games. Yes, it's still a difference that matters, but will the difference between ultra and high textures be enough to offset Nvidia's better RT, software solutions, and brand recognition? I wanted to say "I don't think so", but it should be a straight-up "No!". At the very least, not when the 7800XT and 4070 are being sold at the exact same price. Great review, really interesting stats. I think one missing point here is that upscaling using DLSS usually outclasses FSR in every way possible, in every game that have both implementations. For example, FSR at Quality very often looks WORSE than DLSS using Performance. Not to mention having additional Nvidia features like Frame Gen, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. As mentioned frequently by people like Digital Foundry, the image quality of the upscaler really needs to be a factor in comparisons because sharing raw benchmark numbers doesn't paint a full picture for consumers. While image quality comparisons would obviously introduce more subjectivity, I think at this point it's an essential piece of the puzzle.

You’re mistaken here. FSR 3 doesn’t have, or use, any improvements to the upscaling already present in FSR 2. It adds a Frame Generation feature that interpolates and generates new frames to increase the frame rate, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS 3.0 Frame Gen. It does not improve image quality in the slightest (and just like Nvidia Frame Gen, arguably reduces image quality)

*RTX4070 user... my 2 cents* When I bought my RTX4070, the AMD comparison was the RX-6800XT. The POWER DRAW under gaming was 300W vs 200W for the RTX4070 (my room gets WARM so power draw matters a lot). The price in Canada was also slightly HIGHER. Aside from VRAM the AMD card didn't offer much. Ray-tracing to me isn't a deal-breaker but it matters. If I was comparing an RTX4070 now with an RX-7800XT I'd need to think much harder about it if the RX-7800XT was cheaper. Power draw 250W (vs 200W). Not really a factor... FSR3? Too bad I can't compare so that's a tough one. CUDA? Matters but not a deal breaker. Price? Not a big deal to me but not a deal-breaker. VRAM? Ya, I really wanted 16GB but I couldn't justify an RTX4080 as I'd also have to rebuild my PC (R9-3900x CPU currently) due to a big CPU bottleneck... long story short I'd probably still go with the RTX4070 but mainly for DLSS and CUDA (Topaz video editing)... AMD will have a tough time getting me back though. I'm willing to pay EXTRA for better to a point. I get super distracted by things like SHIMMERING etc so visual QUALITY to me is probably the most important part.... Although, I probably will keep the RTX4070 for a long, long time now. I have a lot of games and I seem to be replaying OLDER GAMES just at higher resolutions. Currently playing Mass Effect Legendary trilogy (modded) and Skyrim AE (modded). I have FPS drops in Spider-Man Remastered but I wouldn't build a new PC for that. I'd really need SEVERAL games that just blow me away for me to justify building a new PC. I've got so much time and so much money after all.

I was even willing to go Intel Arc because of it. Ada Lovelace was a waste of a gen for us gamers. Shame.

Thanks for the comparison. Huge missed opportunity IMO not to include at least some undervolting/overclocking results. The 4070 can't really be pushed higher performance-wise but can achieve great efficiency gains (as was mentioned), but according to some reviews there's a potential 10+% performance uplift potential in the RX7800 XT with little cost (slightly increased power consumption). If performance is all that matters, that tilts the decision even further towards the 7800 XT.
@mlsasd6494
@mlsasd6494 9 месяцев назад
imo its a lot more interesting to see undervolting results if you can reduce power consumption without too much of a hit to performance
@mojojojo6292
@mojojojo6292 9 месяцев назад
You can 10% out of the 4070 as well combined with an undervolt it still uses around stock 190w average or with just the undervolt you can have very near stock performance at 140w.

@@mlsasd6494 I'm clearly inexperienced when it comes to Radeon/Adrenaline undervolting vs. Geforce/MSI Afterburner - every 7800 XT undervolting+overclocking example I've seen results in HIGHER power consumption. Scratching my head trying to understand this...

I guess I don't get the excitement. Okay its a couple percent faster. The vram/memory bus is nice but there doesn't seem to be any meaningful gains just.. marketing to bring you in because 16>12. You are losing out on Reflex, DLSS (looks much better and I hope AMD improves their FSR), Frame Generation, DLDSR, better AV1 support for non video editing people (discord actually supporting nvidia.. hope they update but its been out since the beginning of the year), cuda, nvenc, and I'm sure theres more. Nvidia is getting close to the point where upscaling looks as good or better then native. Ray Reconstruction looks VERY good. So far most of AMDs tech is just.. not as good and they have been constantly playing catch up. Who knows if FSR 3 will be comparable or even good. They definitely need to improve the quality of FSR. If you take a peek at amd/radeons subreddit you will see just walls of driver problems and just problems in general at any given time, always. I guess I just don't understand the appeal. Maybe if it were $150-200 less. But it seems like you are dropping so many quality of life upgrades just to say I can brute force this with power for a couple of fps more.

On the multigame comparisons, it would be useful to have the bars colored by whether or not that game was playable. Maybe any game where both were under 30 fps are red, under 60 fps yellow? And really if both cards are under 30 fps, I’m not sure it’s worth including that result in the average seeing as most people aren’t going to actually play with those settings. Call it the playable average or 30+ / 60+ average.

Performance-wise, I'd consider the matchup a tie with a little advantage for AMD. Both CP2077 (with RT) and Starfield are basically meaningless for an overall comparison, as they're both heavily influenced by Nvidia and AMD, respectively. There's nothing to be learned there except that if you prefer Starfield, you buy AMD, and if you prefer CP2077 (with RT on!), you buy Nvidia - period. In the end it'll come down to two things: First, if pricing in your region favors Nvidia, you'll probably consider the 4070. If not, the 7800XT is the obvious choice. And second: Your personal upgrade cycle. If you switch GPUs every generation, the 4070 has the superior feature set and thus is a very compelling option. If instead you upgrade your GPU every 3-5 years (or even less often), the 7800XT is immeasurably better. Having 16GB instead of 12GB makes such a huge difference in terms of longevity I'd not even remotely consider the 4070 for a long term build. Moreover, AMD's track record of supporting older GPUs and improving both drivers and features is way better than Nvidia's. If you compare the last decade of GPUs (let's say back to Maxwell), with a few exceptions every AMD card aged better than its Nvidia counterpart. So for long term builders I'd go with the 7800XT, even if its price matches the 4070's.
@gamesmaster1060
@gamesmaster1060 9 месяцев назад
I'm not even sure about the 4070s advantages as the 4070 dips below 60 a lot on DLSS Cyberpunk on overdrive RT path tracing (which is the only RT mode I care about). So I think I'd rather just have the extra performance of the 7800xt without RT or mabye low RT. Ray tracing is something I think I can wait for until it becomes cheaper to run. I think if you are buying a GPU for ray tracing you should get a 4080 or 4090. 4070 feels like a bit of a half measure and the demands of cyberpunk will apparently go up with the dlc/update

Now that AMD's entire lineup is out and presumably Nvidia's too, can we see a comparison chart of their full stack of cards? It would be nice to see how the 7800XT compares to the 7900XTX or even the 4080. AKA how much performance is lost for a 50% (or more) discount? or conversely how much performance can be gained by doubling the price?

A lot of weird things happen with pricing in different regions, and it's often not clear what's causing it. I assume it's sometimes because retailers are being stubborn with pricing, perhaps because they aren't keeping a close eye on the broader market trends, but it's also sometimes related to weak supply chains. I have heard that AMD cards would sell so poorly in some regions that it basically causes retailers to be unable to buy large enough orders to be able to sell AMD cards at their MSRP pricing. One issue is just that when cards sell out, listings where the cards are still in stock are often the over-priced ones. However, that just makes so little sense right now in regions where the 4070 can easily be found for MSRP. The 4070 often seems to go on brief sales at 550 in the US. If you must buy an Nvidia card, waiting for the 4070 to hit 550, or waiting for some other deal, like the 100 dollar steam gift card deal Microcenter was doing, is a great idea. In Canada, I noticed that the discounted prices on the RX 6000 series cards were never quite as low as in the US, though the prices for the RTX 3000 series cards also seemed to be worse. The 6800 XT was never widely available for near 500 USD, which is very strange, considering that availability of the 4070 for MSRP (810 CAD) has been excellent ever since it launched. Availability of some models of the 7800 XT in Canada hasn't been as good as the US, and some models have been priced higher than in the US, such as the Sapphire Pulse, which was priced closer to 525 USD than to the 510 USD price it is available for in the US. However, some models of 7800 XT have been the same or even a hair lower than US pricing, with the reference model going for 675 CAD. So, now all those retailers who were trying to sell the 6800 XT for closer to 800 CAD or more over the past 6 months are probably regretting not dropping the pricing sooner.
