Hey Keith.. you are a huge inspiration to anybody that has ever seen you videos!!!!!! Okay enough kissing ass.. I can't believe you're only four years older than I am!! You have an old soul, and a personality that makes me want to live back in the old school days.. the craftsmanship that you present on your channel is the fading and,. almost lost concept on anybody younger than 30 years old.. it makes me very sad I think that way BUT... Thanks to your videos I can show my nieces and nephews that is not the case!! Fully skilled Machinists and makers can never be replaced by a robot!!!! Love your videos!!

Good job Keith! Something else very useful for you would be to make a set of parallels that T-bolt crossways to the table top. Using 1 1/2" or 2"x 3" cold-rolled bar stock, they need to extend about 6" either side of the table. You can then lay larger plates on them and c - clamp the work to the parallels. Every radial drill I ever used had a set mounted on it.

An old trick that was taught to me years ago when driving pins or pivots is a very simple and cheap one. Get the pins cleaned up and ready to go,then put them in the freezer the day before you know you're going to be putting them back in. It isn't a cure-all,but it never hurts and it might just give you that half a thou that you wind up needing to get something back in operation. Great job,as always,Mr. Rucker. My compliments.
@jonka1
@jonka1 5 лет назад
The other trick is not to destroy your lead hammer that is not up to the job. Use a steel lump hammer and a piece of wood to tap it in, but that would need a moment's thought.
@kurtsimmons1587
@kurtsimmons1587 4 года назад
Keith I just found your channel. The company that I worked for when doing similar assembly. We would put the pins in our large freezer. The pins would just slide in. We would also put grease on the pin as we would slide it through. I know this is a year old or more but maybe this might help on other projects.

Really nice piece of machinery. I can't imagine needing a drill press for anything that that couldn't handle. Good decision on the gantry crane. Not only would the material have cost you, but the time in getting the fixtures and jigs set up go get everything fitted would have been significant and you still wouldn't have been sure of it's weight capacity. There are some things it just doesn't pay to make yourself even if you have the tools to do it and this is one of them. It looks like it works really well. I may actually look into one of those myself.

Oh Keith, please use a Lift Swivel in place of that eye-bolt next time you need to flip something heavy like that. Putting a side load on an eye bolt greatly reduces its capacity (at least you had the eye bolt fully seated on its shoulder though). This is especially important when the single eye bolt is your only point of contact for the lift. You do great work and your videos are very educational and inspirational. We need to keep you around making videos and inspiring us all for a long time to come! Thanks and keep up the good work!
@BigRalphSmith
@BigRalphSmith 5 лет назад
To me, that eye bolt looked beefy enough and pretty well lined up with the general center-of-mass after it was all assembled. Do you really think there was enough side loading to be a significant concern? I've got some rigging experience and his setup didn't look too bad to me. Rarely is rigging perfect but I would have called that safe.
@barnyardkh4
@barnyardkh4 5 лет назад
@@BigRalphSmith probably OK in this instance because he had it fully seated against the eye bolt shoulder. I'm trying to recall off-hand but I believe the rating for the eye bolt drops to something like 1/3 if loaded beyond 45 degrees (something like that). Had it been only partially installed (of the threads too long for the threaded hole) then you'd would've been limited by the area of the minor dia. of the thread and the stress riser of the sharp thread. The real danger is someone watching this video and not realizing there could've been a real problem. I've seen beefier eye bolts snap under side-loading that would've killed someone if they had been underneath. Swivels are expensive but it's hard to justify not getting one if you have an accident .
@ronalddavis
@ronalddavis 5 лет назад
we rigged some big stuff with eye bolts in the shipyard especially big electric motors and I have seen stuff that would curl your hair but don't remember dropping anything
@farmalltomf
@farmalltomf 5 лет назад
Ok, forged I-bolts are rated for 0 degree, straight loading, overhead lift. If you load at 45 degrees or 90 degrees, they are de-rated. Now, as long as the load does not exceed the de-rated amount, you are absolutely fine. Understand, there is a whole set of specs for overhead lifting and rigging. Here is a chart to help with the de-rating: twaylifting.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Chicago-Machine-Bolt.jpg A 5/8-11 I-bolt is rated at 4000 lbs vertical lift. Load it at 45 degrees, and it de-rates to 1000 lbs. vertical lift. Keith was fine for what he was doing, IMHO.
@barnyardkh4
@barnyardkh4 5 лет назад
@@farmalltomf point taken. Did you consider the acceleration factor when it rolled unexpectedly and hit the end of the chain? The off-shore O&G industry uses a 2.5x amplification factor for dynamic loading such as this so if the 5/8 eye bolt you mentioned above didn't see more than 400# it would he considered safe. Nonetheless, I wasn't trying to start an argument. It was simply worth stating since not everyone who might be watching this video would know to watch out for side-loading an eye bolt regardless of whether or not we think Keith was safe in this particular instance. Bottom line is to consider all load cases and research an acceptable, safe, lifting solution and don't simply grab the first thing you find that happens to fit the threaded hole. That's all I was trying to say. Sorry to hijack your thread/video Keith.

I have no idea what they ever did but I feel like I wish that I lived back then.. since I was little kid I can remember my grandpa laying pieces of sod over top of a fire and putting his big set of bellows in and we would practice getting re-rod hot enough to pound out into little knives that

By the way we had to make new ones every year because they were made out of wrought iron rod and every year the tip would be rusted off or broken and you can't afford to have even one single piece of steel wind up in the food someone paid for your walnuts..when somebody crunched into a piece of homemade black walnut fudge and broke their tooth..!!

I almost choked up my liver when that table flipped. When the center of gravity moves far enough past the balance point, you are along for the ride. I'm glad that practical physics lab didn't end with a broken part or pressure amputations of your digits. Take it slow and easy. I'd hate to see you in a cast. Other than that, it looks great. It's an impressive industrial size drill and gives Keith great capabilities with that restored "right size" table for the Carlton. Now I'm eager to see Abom79 get his Carlton restored and using it. If Keith's former table is too low maybe Adam can have a taller pedestal cast by the fellow who did the broken corner piece. Or, maybe he'll luck out and find another one gathering dust in an old factory, etc.

Please forgive my ignorance as I'm not a machinist in any way (I'm barely good enough to call myself a woodworker). I was wondering why you didn't use something similar to the way woodworkers use a bowtie to secure cracks to make the joint in your table base stronger. Is it just not worth it? Is the brazing job truly strong enough that such measures would be unnecessary, or something else? Thanks so much for your videos. I learn so much and appreciate all you do!
