In a case of radial nerve palsy, a thorough clinical examination is most important! But there are some features that may not be very obvious on clinical examination. For instance, the nature of the injury - whether the injury is a neuropraxia and hence transient, or a complete cut of the nerve which will not recover on its own!
Hence it is prudent to order appropriate investigations. But when the patient gets back with the report, we need to understand the findings to be able to interpret it on our own also, as we will want to know certain things that may not have been provided in the printed report.
This video talks about the basic investigations to order, like the X-rays, Ultrasound, MRI and Nerve Conduction Studies, and the interpretation and significance of the results!

Hello sir, i recently got my plate removed from the humerus bone and after that plate removal i have radial nerve palsy. Doctor says it happened because nerve gets stretched while removing the plate from the bone. I have all the senses in the complete arm but can’t extend wrist and fingers. Just want to know if there is anything to worry about as it’s been 2 months since the surgery and there is not any major improvement.

Why nerve conduction studies may not become abnormal for 3-6 weeks?? Please explain sir 🙏🏽

Immediately after injury, there will be edema and inflammation will be prominent. The edema fluid may interfere with the transmission of electrical signals, and hence the results obtained may not be accurate. Hence, a period of 3 weeks will be necessary for the inflammation to subside, and provide more accurate results.

@@GKHandSurgery thank you for your reply. I saw a patient who had wrist drop, radial nerve proper palsy for 7 days. However nerve conduction studies are normal.
