This video is great, but it's missing that "sensible" vocal pedalboard Virgil kept mentioning we COULD build... Maybe a follow-up with something put together? Like: compression, reasonable reverbs, maybe a POG?

you can do the same thing in studio through your mixer using the aux sends to guitar pedals. my favorite is Microphone into mixer mic pre and send out to a mel9-reverb chain. plus with multiple aux sends like on mackies or behringer mixers etc, you can mix in 3 or 4 parallel chains of effects, including rack effects.

I've been playing both guitar and drums for about 25 years. Piano for maybe 15. Attempting vocals for the past 10 or so.. Lucky to have grown up around a professional studio and eventually begin building one of my own. But the reason that I subscribed to Sweetwater's channel (after all these years of being a 2nd generation Sweetwater customer)? Flugelhorn. I don't play horns, but I'm willing to bet there's a flugelhorn player out there somewhere who's days has just been made, knowing they have not been forgotten.

You could probably get a local amp tech to build something like this much cheaper. It's not rocket science but it's definitely a rip off. It's basically an XLR in 1/4 out preamp with an eq and effects loop.. Very basic stuff. I bet an amp tech or builder could build something like this for closer to 200. That is still a lot, but unless you want to learn how to solder and wire and stuff like that then that would be your only option. Soldering really is pretty easy though.
@ihaveaproblem3153
@ihaveaproblem3153 2 года назад
I was going to make something like this because vocal pedals are so much more expensive then guitar pedals, I remember learning how xlr cables work so I'm guessing you just effect one of the signals and bypass the other, I also guess the 180 phase switch is cutting off one side or switching the effected side, xlr is such a simple great solution for removing noise produced from a cable by having two identical signals and flipping one of the signals phase then at the mixer flipping the signal back any introduce noise along the cable is deleted

A small mixer with an insert will take care of most of this except the wet/dry mix. Also would be cool to run a harmonizer in front of the Mel9.
@lucianoluggren
@lucianoluggren 9 месяцев назад
You have to adapt impedances, but yes. Wet/dry you can do this by returning the pedals to the same mixer and adjusting the level of each channel, the mixer must have at least one pre fader aux send.
@flaneursong78
@flaneursong78 8 месяцев назад
@@lucianoluggren I’m looking to do this via a mall mixer precisely, like the Mackie ProFx6 or 10. How do you make sure it’s going with righ impedance from the mixer to the pedals? Thanks!
@lucianoluggren
@lucianoluggren 8 месяцев назад
Hello, this option is only recommended if you already have a mixer or you get a cheap mixer. If you are going to spend money and the sum is close to the value of the Voco-Loco, it may be better to buy this all-in-one solution from Radial. The mixer has to have a physical Pre-fader aux output (neither mackie prefx6 or fx10 does have one), the best way is to connect the pre-fader aux output to the input of a Reamp box (like the Radial ProRMP), then exit the reamp and go to the pedals. Then you connect the last pedal to a direct box and from the direct box you return to a mixer channel. With the original mic channel and the pedal return channel you can make a wet/dry mix. I repeat, this process is recommended when you already have a mixer and you also use these tools (such as the reamp and the direct box) for other uses. And if you already have the mixer, before buying a reamp, you can try skip the reamp, directly outputting the aux output to the pedals with a 1/4 TS cable (normal guitar cable) and check if that set-up works for you. Sometimes it works, sometimes there is too much noise or the tone changes too much without the reamp.@@flaneursong78

@flaneursong78 8 месяцев назад
@@lucianoluggren many thanks for the great explanation, very useful. I indeed planned on getting a cheap/simple mixer, as my goal is to streamline as much as possible the process, as well as the gear needed, but I get your point, better to invest in the full package that opens the options. I think I don’t need a real wet/dry setup, just be able to use the guitar pedals for vocals and acoustic guitar with a condenser mic, and get a decent result. Would the mixer work for a simple use case as this one? Other option I was thinking if a simple pedal like a Flamma vocal one, which has XLRs and jack ins and outs, as well as phantom power
@lucianoluggren
@lucianoluggren 8 месяцев назад
It depends on what you want to do, whether it's using the guitar and singing at the same time, live or in the studio. If what you want are simple effects (such as reverb, delay, etc.) to play live guitar and sing at the same time, perhaps a pedal like the TC electronic voice live play acoustic can help you, it is more expensive but it already has the effects. built-in (it is pedal format and robust).@@flaneursong78

Hi, thank you for the interesting video. I have one question: is it possible to use the effects by plugging the jack of the amplified guitar to the pedals? Or are all the pedals monopolized by the use of the Voco Loco? Sorry for my english and thank you
@sweetwater
@sweetwater Год назад
Hi, Gianni. The In and Out jacks of the pedals would be connected to the Send and Return from the Voco Loco. In other words, if you have effects being used with the Voco Loco, you won’t be able to also use them with a guitar at the same time. Thanks for your interest! Buffered effects loop?
@sweetwater
@sweetwater Год назад
Hi, Kody. A buffer is typically used in an effects chain to convert a high impedance signal to low impedance so that it can handle long cable runs without tone loss. That doesn’t really apply to this since the initial mic signal going into the pedal is a balanced, low impedance signal. The Voco-Loco uses an internal transformer to convert the signal back to high impedance so that it can be properly run through effects pedals, and then converts back to balanced, low impedance when it comes back in. Since the cable runs are short and the pedals themselves are buffering the signal, a buffer in the FX loop is not necessary. Thanks for your interest! Why would there be a mute button when you can just step on the loop button and kill the FX. Seems redundant. Also why get this when there are all these options in a tc voice live pedal? They take up less space and have up to 500 programmable presets. If it's money, by the time you purchase all the pedals you need to create the FX you want you might as well got the TC.

OR, for much cheaper, just buy an XLR-1/4" jack and run through any pedals of your choosing. Just like with DI's and amp modelers, get the 1/4"-XLR jack. Otherwise, you're really just spending dough on what's essentially a fancy pants overpriced EQ pedal.
@gavinw5469
@gavinw5469 2 года назад
I don't think that would work as well. The signal level will drop significantly, so you should put a simple preamp to get the level up again, because 1/4 will just drop the volume. If you did that and built a simple passive eq, you would be set!
@gavinw5469

Jesus Christ you guys. Yes, I want to sing through a fuzz pedal to get crazy distorted sounds with my voice, but obviously, I also need high end components for my trash sound, and I'm really worried about phase issues or the wrong level when I sing through a motherflippin guitar pedal! Oh, and also, I have a massive urge to spend 300 bucks for a 5 second effect. I heard it's also a really cool effect to hold a match to 15 20$ bills on stage.
