www.madfientist... - A couple of months ago, a guy named Joshua emailed me to ask if I'd be a guest on his new show -- the Radical Personal Finance podcast. I agreed and we ended up having a very interesting two-hour conversation about many different financial topics.
Since then, however, Joshua has been forced to take down his podcast (for undisclosed reasons) and since he's not sure when he'll be able to put it back up again, he has agreed to let me publish our interview (thanks!).
It was great being on the other side of the interview for once so hopefully you enjoy hearing a bit about my personal journey to financial independence.
Highlights:
- Different Paths to FI
- Frugality and Sacrifice
- How to Have an Expensive Hobby
- Travel Hacking (madfientist.com...)
- Slow Travel
Look out for part two of the interview, where we dive into some complex but very powerful strategies for pursuing financial independence and early retirement.

[1] Glad to hear that his wife has begun to change towards a more conscious and purposeful approach to frugality, i.e., less waste and discretionary spending in the short term = massive freedom and life-choices for the rest of your life. [2] Too many people presume that they will be able to continue to work for the next x years or decades, but do not plan how they will cope if they suffered a divorce, a death in the family, accident, injury, disability, major illness, etc. [3] You can love what you do, but active income depends on always working, which creates major risks. Only passive income is sustainable without needing to work. That covers everything.

Congratulations on getting off to a great start, Paul. Any chance you could get your bachelors part time while keeping the job you have? You may want to check with your HR department if they have any tuition benefits that you could take advantage of.

Thanks a lot, Chris! I actually wrote an article on travel hacking, in which I discuss some of my favorite travel hacking resources. Since RU-vid won't allow me to put any links in this comment, I updated the video description for this video and added a link to the travel hacking post on my site. I love talking about this stuff so feel free to leave a comment on that post if you have any questions.

Great job on the podcast. That's unfortunate Josh had to take his down. Do you have any links of recommended websites you can post for the travel hacking? Keep up the good work.

I like what he shared about used reward-points and airline miles to pay for overseas vacations, flights, accommodation, et cetera. However, it is important to know how much you have to spend to earn those points and then what is the effective value per point and per dollar spent. Unless you are avoiding all interest on credit-cards and earning cash-back, points, or miles exceeding the annual fees, none of it is actually free or as low-cost as it sounds.
