Started in 1974 to fill the void after the offshore MW radio stations
like Veronica, Noordzee and Mi Amigo were harshly outlawed.
Centraal became popular very fast, as an FM pirate station, on land.
There was appetite for joyful presentation of music with jingles,
and above all, listener requests in live telephone calls.
People had become addicted to that style, as an alternative to
the serious ideological state radio in those days.
In the late 1980s, the authorities began to ban the FM pirates also,
by means of heavy handed raids, impoundings and prosecutions.
Those were based on various laws, such as tax evasion and
illegal broadcasting. They hadn't thought of copyright violation yet,
probably because the music industry enjoyed the free promotion...
Those were the days.
Revival of the original FM pirates came with the internet in the 2000s,
enabling easy spread of the good old times and new program formats.
