Captured from an unearthed cassette featuring a full recording of the hour-long Top 20 chart rundown from August 1975 featuring radio DJ and broadcaster Tom Browne, (Tom is pictured on the right - Alan 'fluff' Freeman is on the left.)
The recording contained a lot of background hiss. The Dolby B setting on the tape deck removed most of this without compromising sound quality (Dolby C was a little too 'squelchy'). No other software modification has been performed.
I wanted to upload the whole cassette, but copyright issues on the songs prevent me from doing so. As such, this is Tom Browne listing the full top 20 towards the end of the broadcast.

No probs. The guy who lent me the tapes recorded them himself in 1975. I was 1 year old! 😂

When Tom was reading the chart, I said it along with him. For some reason, I can still remember this listing by heart. #21, incidentally, was 'Summertime City' by Mike Batt.

I have a huge collection of chart shows (Radio One and Radio Two) going back to the early 1960s up to the early 1980s. Pick of the Pops, Solid Gold Sixty, Top Twenty and Top Forty. They are currently on cassette tapes and I am transferring them to MP3 It is going to take months; I will have a list of shows and dates ready in the near future and hope to swap and share with other collectors of such shows.

Don’t remember Tom Browne at all? Only Simon Bates onwards really, as I was only listening to the top 40 from 8 years old and I am 43 now!!!!

I'm 46, but I can't remember Tom Browne either. I had to look him up when I got hold of this tape.

Im afraid I am old enough to remember Tom Browne. Sad day when he left the Sunday evening chart show. With over 5 years in the job, in remains the longest continuously serving DJ in the countdown slot. Sadly, I have only 1 Tom Browne recording, the 1977 end of year countdown when I had just turned 13. I never understood why Tom never crossed over into TV or the wider BBC or media world. As far as I am aware he never did Totp, Why not? Would have thought he would have been on the cusp of a huge career, but he largely disappeared.

I do remember Tom Browne always even after all those years (50yrs+) , I couldn't miss a single episode on Top 20 every Sunday evening . I love his voice and the rhythm of broadcasting style. Missed him very much indeed

Hi Steve, what a very interesting find. The show date is actually Sunday 5 October 1975. I have dozens of Tom Browne shows (and hundreds of later chart recording as well) and would it possible to trade a copy for something from my archive? Would love to do some business if possible...…
