I really miss them too. Easiest place to get a 16 ohm diode or any other myriad of things I might need while installing security systems and audio systems! Now I have to stock all that stuff, and I still run into things I need. I’m always saying;” I bet Radio Shack would have had it!”

I had an 18" Optimus subwoofer in the early 90s in a leaky homemade box. I added it with my pair of 12" MTX Blue Thunders and thought I was the hottest basshead on 4 wheels when I would crank up my 1 button Sparkomatic tape deck and Jensen amp in my 76 Malibu Classic.

Cool! The manufacturer honestly printed 180-20.000Hz - respect! Most of the stuff like this available back then had all the same print: 20 - 20000 Hz 😅😅😅

I absolutely love these old school videos of non-high-end equipment. It reminds me of 1988 when I had no money and wasn't even aware of equipment outside of auto-parts stores, Radio Shack and those "Sound Expo" shows at the civic center. Please keep them coming. Additionally, I actually had a set of speakers very similar to this Optimus set. I hooked them up to a radio out of an 1981 Buick Century and used them for a sound system in a workshop.

In my garage I had an older Alpine 2-shaft (Or just “Shaft radio” as we ‘old guys’ liked to call them) that we hooked up 8 bookshelf speakers to and ran with it. That thing was still playing over 20 years later when I finally moved to a bigger house/garage! The new garage has a period-correct dvd/flatscreen tuner with a Goodwill-bought 50”LED tv on the wall.

I remember being a kid always hanging out at the Radio Shack in Woodlynne NJ. I stayed blowing fuses in my home receiver because I didn't know anything about ohm load and impedance. The guy that worked there taught me and I began to drift into car audio. I was only 14 with no license and would still tell dudes if their systems were trash or good. Even fought a few grown men. Miss those days 😂

I was always a big fan of Radio Shack's Optimus line of audio products. In high school I installed an Optimus 28 watt am-fm cassette stereo with auto-reverse in a 1975 Chrysler Cordoba, powering a pair of Sony 2-way 6x9 speakers in the rear deck. I thought I really had something back in 1992. :D Then in 1997 I purchased a pair of Optimus Pro-LX7 speakers for the home stereo receiver, a bone-stock Pioneer 70 watt receiver. I still have that same pair of speakers to this day. Can't beat the clarity of those Linaeum tweeters. ;-)

Optimus(Radio Shack) always seemed to be right around Sherwood levels of quality. Competent, but not quite up to Pioneer and Kenwood mainstream levels. I remember their EQ/Boosters weren't mindblowing, but they had a line-in so you could plug a walkman(and eventually a discman) in, bypassing the need for a head unit. Perfect for the broke stockboy that I was, driving a car that didn't have a plate for a head unit even if I could afford one.

I sold a bunch of these bitd when I worked at Radio Shack. They were quite a bit more inexpensive then other brands, and the styling looked super modern at the time. The only drawback is half the people who bought them had no idea how to install them in their cars. People would leave them sitting loose and they would get damaged from flying around the back seat.

Back in 84, one of my first projects was to install a modular boom box into my brother's Chevette. The speakers detached, and it already used 12v worth of batteries. So it was nothing to hook up a transformer primary in series and short out the secondary to get rid of any buzzing from the engine. That created just enough of a voltage divider to reduce the 13.5v engine down to the 12v boom box. The rest was just happenstance that the boom box cube actually fit in the dash with minimal modification. My first try, I reversed the power and instantly blew the boom box outputs. I didn't even have to turn it on to blow them ICs. So I had to pull it out and replace them. That was a $25 mistake on a $90 project. I wish I had taken pictures. But any pics taken back then would probably be all faded by now. Or outright lost. The final result was pretty nice looking. Even if it wasn't the best sounding thing ever installed in a Chevette. Next project was installing a dubious sounding J.C. Whitney amp that may or may not have been much more powerful than the boom box. Of course, as all such projects go, my brother totals the car within months of getting it to sound right. And he never thought to pull anything out before junking the car. Just FML.

At 15W RMS per speaker, you're right to say don't expect them to get very loud. There are plenty of head units that would blow these speakers. Even some factory installed head units could. But pairing them with a nice 10" sub and perhaps crossing them over at 200Hz could work out for someone not really into a lot of noise.

I think he had a smaller 2-channel Coustic amp to drive them, if memory serves. I crossed ‘em over high, and had to mess around with placement on the rear deck to get them sounding good up front. Once I dialed it in, they sounded way better than they had any right to. I started recommending them to other customers who needed super budget speakers in a surface mount package.
