The Optimus Pro LX-10 with the Linaeum di-pole tweeter has a very unique speaker design sold in the late 1990's. I found these at a local Thrift Shop and they only needed a new set of cloths for the front grills. There are many videos on RU-vid that show how to do that, so instead, we go into the details for the Linaeum di-pole tweeter; the inventors, the company, the patent, the reviews, and explain it.

Nice find! I found a pair of LX-5 in perfect condition and was touching and looking it over and the surround crumbled. Refoamed the surrounds and they sound great for near field listing about 12 inches off the wall.

My first pair of decent speakers were Optimus, back in the 70's. I had a pair of Linarium tweeters you could pair with any speakers. They really sounded great.

I had some. Upgraded the crossover and swapped out the woofer with a scan speak (IIRC). Still, the lineaum, like a ribbon doesn't play low very well. So inevitably, there is a hole between treble and upper midrange. Sounds pleasant and airy, but lacks that presence and coherence of dynamic drivers. Good mid-fi sound.

This is a fine example of " new old technology."....the original idea was from the 20s or 30s and was just the same except for larger poster paper diaphragms. (before mylar" ) Several old engineering magazine reprints showed the identical design, though on a larger /full range scale. How did they get a patent ? Secondly ,the Radio Shack versions developed a bad reputation for reliability i.e. burnout. I think this could have been solved with more robust voice coils but consider the source and follow the money. In any case I liked the sound and if I live long enough I want to try building a larger set perhaps using Kapton diaphragms in case the voice coil failures were due to heat. Thanks for the good and interesting and entertaining post.....way to go speaker boy. It shows again that better ideas dont always work out or sell

I purchased 5 of the Linaeum tweeters planning to use them for surround system. However, never got around to use them. Recently at the Toronto Audio show, there was a French speaker company that showed a prototype that was like 1 foot high and 1 foot wide. It sounded very natural and clear.

My favorite speakers from Radio shack was the Mach Ones. with a massive 15 in woofer.

I was thinking about a project to see if I could get some of these linaeum tweeters and attach them to top of my JBL towers and remove the JBL tweeters.

I had the bookshelf diople version. I really did not like the sound at all. Maybe it was the low sensitivity.

I've always liked the Linaeum speakers. It's a shame that RadioShack kinda got out of selling audio and video as time went on. They actually had decent stuff, nothing too high end, but decent overall. I worked there in the early 90's, and remember these well. I have a bunch of LX-5's around the house, and I still like the sound quality today.

The ferrofluid has gone bad in mine and im lost how to clean and replace the fluid without hurting them. Ive been trying to find help on this.
