Got this to use when doing digital where duty cycle is high, finger saver version.. One mod I did was adding a tiny SPST switch in the front for the fan, so the fan is not on all the time (too noisy). Just put the switch in line with the fan power lead. Eazy peazy.
This is an awesome addition. I needed to retrofit with the base fan guard plate. My YL has one of my G90's with this cooler stand fitted and I kept hold of the one with the beefy wings. I'd suggest some self-adhesive feet on the bottom to stop it sliding. Had this base for over a year now and the best bit is the fan keeps running after shuting the G90 down and continuing to cool as long as you keep the PSU running. Even the big names don't do that!
Very nice! I've got the previous version without the fan cover and it works a treat, especially when you're running FT8 for hours :) I'm with you 100% about the fan noise -I replaced mine with a Noctua model which is almost silent. The downside being that you can't hear the fan, which runs all the time when power is applied to the radio -even when you turn the radio off at the end of an activation. Did I mention that I have the version with no fan cover? Nothing beats driving back from a POTA session with bent fingers :)
I have at least 3 "turtles" one SAE, one metric and one specialized Allen and other odd keys. I am amazed at how many different connectors there are, lol Yes, I have duplicates of everything, it is bettter to have two of them than be missing one ( 10MM screws, wrenches and motorcycle repairs taught me a lot)
My G90 is a hot-running radio and I was concerned, particularly about doing portable next summer. Reassured now it's not only my radio but I'm definitely going to get one of these fan trays. Excellent information especially about the amount of current it draws. No need now for any further research, just need to order one. Cheers.
Yep bought it and I really thought the fan would draw a lot more juice but it doesn't even register when I turn the radio off and run just the fan. Love it.
Mine has not got hot..... Yet. Of course I haven't run ft8 with it. I have the original fan with a cover on the fan. Great video. Been trying ft8 for the first time. Going to introduce my students to the digital age. I think we made contact last night (Thursday 1-13-22) on ft8. Keep up the great videos!!
Thanks for this video. Good assembly instructions as well as proof positive that the cooling bracket works. BTW you could have used a sound meter app on your phone to measure the decibels. Just sayin'... Peace and Harmony
If you have a separate less used battery you could put the radio and fan on separate batteries. Your less used one for the fan and the other, hopefully more capacity, for the radio.
I was an early adopter of the g90 and it's a good little radio. The early adopters with the fan unit did not receive a bottom cover. It's wide open and the fan is uncovered you can stick your fingers in it. The chassis was punched for screws to hold the bottom cover on. I'm glad one is available now but are there any available for early adopters that did not get a bottom cover?
