The Daily Mail performance is flawless. The King Of Limbs B-Sides like this and Staircase were the best songs on the album yet didn’t make the studio release cut. Shows how deep their catalogue is
Saw The Smile yesterday in Brussels and will see them again tonight again in Amsterdam. Big Radiohead fan (i've seen them live 11 times) and love the Smile. They played several new songs, with one song (Instant Psalm) sounding like something off of The Bends. Pretty crazy and an incredible show overall
It has been a genuine treat following your Radiohead reactions. Your background as a vast listener of so much music as well as your history as a musician adds a unique and entertaining perspective that makes your reactions truly stand out. The relationship to one's favorite band is very special (Radiohead being mine since I bought OK Computer when it came out when I as in college and my room was a psychedelic black-light neon lava-lamp MC Escher wall-covered Wonderland paradise, complete with Siberian Husky puppy and anywhere from 4 to 12 people for late night bong hits and mushroom tea from the bars earlier, at around 3am, BUT the crowning focal point was a stunningly sophisticated (given it was still the dawn of the internet in 1997) psychedelic screen saver (if anyone reading this knows what I'm talking about please leave a comment - they were beyond incredible) which not only created thousands of patterns of limitless crazy variety (from Mandelbrot fractals to interactive animation) but best of all it also pulsed/danced with the beat of the music. Suffice to say, I'd have fallen in love with this album and band regardless, but just a little backstory to bring some extra life to this one man's venture into Radiohead lore (Circa Blacksburg, Virginia in the 90s - go Hokies.) Lots of reactions to the "In Rainbows" Basement sessions, but I believe this is the fist proper TKOTL concert, so SERIOUS props to you!!!! I won't be the only one to say it, and I love the album though it does fit a unique sound which takes some listening over years to really appreciate - BUT, I like many others, found this live session far far better than the studio release. Amongst RH fans this is a common feeling - something about the way the album was made - loops and samples and splices mixed together with some beautiful moments throughout - to learn to play it all live truly brought out the songs in a way that is absolutely magical. "The Daily Mail" and "Staircase" (a song which feels like a totally new musical genre for the future) were released in their live version a month after the album/basement set, and back then while I really like TKOL I was still a little let down as this was THE FOLLOW-UP to 'IN RAINBOWS" for crying out loud....we were expecting something as massive as "Rubber Soul"...But then they did this concert and man oh man did it dispel all of those thoughts. Sure, to this day I wonder what if they has added "Staircase" "The Daily Mall" and maybe "These are My Twisted Words" ---- and rather than being everyone's unanimous pick for 8th of 9 favorite Radiohead ALBUM, it would fit like a glove into their discography rather than the beloved "experimental rhythm with "Lotus Flower" and a couple beautiful ballads ( I think more highly than this but it is what I imagine most fans consider it . Anyway, the "Basement" version is INCREDIBLE and truly stands as THE definitive 'The King of Limbs.' You are the Magellan of Radiohead reactors as to my knowledge and I am fanatical about following RH reactions (there have been a handful - if that - of individual reactions from this set but never the full one let alone more than 1 song every couple years or so) - so for your fans and fans of reactions in general and RH reactions most of all, this is a very very special moment. My thanks to you, if there were a 'Reactor Award' I would nominate you for it. Peace in the streetz.

@@jameshannagan4256 Hey James, hah, yeah I mean I think if i have missed any RH react video I'd be surprised, I do a nightly check-in. Thinking about finally pitching in and requesting some of my own to push them out further. probably on that guy Rory's channel, as I got into a long comment conversation with the guy who had mainly requested all of the previous videos he'd done and I like his channel., kind f has his own style of doing it that comes across well. So yeah, I have seen the Michael guitar guy reactions - they are great, watching him drop even trying to work the songs out just sink into the music. Plus on that channel I could request some more off the normal catalogue you usually see as so far the videos posted have been a lot of the usuals but a couple I had never seen myelf - one live "There, There" which is my favorite song period, which was so cool, and another of "You and Whose Army" I'd never seen - that's an unusual surprise as I'll watch any reaction, so to see new performances as well, then happened to chat with the guy who'd requested all of them, and it's stalled out, so guess after living free for 3 or 4 years I may well pony up so cash and try to build and push out my own rabbit hole if I can.
@@dreww1609 There's a guy who was a musician and I think some kind of music critic who had a great reaction of You And Who's Army live. The story that went with it about how epic the show was also was great. As an added bonus it was in a park complex in Jersey City where I grew up but I don't remember it's name.

I was lucky enough to go to the DC 1998 Tibetan Freedom Fest, the lineup was so utterly incredible, too many iconic acts to name - but it was at the beginning of my love for the band, I'd had OK Computer for a month or so, then I was there and they're live shows was just - it hammered home how special this band and music was, that I already felt but it was a nail to hammer home - like, Michael Stipe from REM came up and sang "Lucky" - that's on RU-vid, its awesome you should check it out - Thom sang one of their songs too I can't recall -crazy to think I was right there - I got to see them again in 2013 for The King Limbs in DC, then I was like three bodies from the stage at Madison Square Garden - I got there early and couldn't believe how much space was still left to get right up to the stage - then I'd bought seats in Pittsburgh to ensure a front row good experience, but I did it before the floor stage experience in NYC, and wish I'd been up front again. How about you? I'm still l convinced they do a tenth record and tour so I'll be ready, but I'd imagine "The Smile" will be coming back through later this year. I had tickets last time but had some messy life situations and I couldn't go, which sucks.
The Daily Mail is top 10 Radiohead songs, shame that it wasn’t released on an album or else i feel it would have been a lot more appreciated, musically it’s a lot more complex than lots of their album songs, that dissonant chord (sounds like Dmaj over Bb? I might be wrong) is incredible and the song sits on it for an almost uncomfortable amount of time and yet it still works, then when the drums and horns kick in (heueheudhsijssjns) and Thoms singing Wheres the truth? its a cmajor chord with thom singing the minor third on top and you don’t even notice how dissonant the chord is. Elite songwriting
The first song... it's kind of like Krautrock but all the glue between the instruments is melting away. Still consistent and has swagger though. Then we have Thom's long soaring vocal phrases that extent through the bars. I love this stuff... I hope Radiohead do a follow up to the King of Limbs. Both In Rainbows and King of Limbs... I imagine Radiohead had Krautrock in their diet around that era. Thom is an incredible vocalist I agree. Whether people appreciate his tones or style, it's hard to deny the control, variation and soul in his voice. I almost think of it a bit like Miles Davis' trumpet.... Miles soars above it all, through the bars and puts a lot of emotion into the dynamics & rhythms.
One of the reasons Radiohead is my favorite is because I naturally hear the music before lyrics when listening to any song and Thom treats vocals as another instrument. He could be singing gibberish and I wouldn't like them any less.
The name of the album is percussion. The beat is so complicated they had to hired Clive Deamer from Portishead for this recording and tour. So in bloom you got 2 drummers(both bald you cant diffeirence them) + jonny on tambour.
I came around a bit late to Radiohead as well. Nice thing about music is that no matter when you find an artist that feeling of discovery is still the same, at least on an individual level. This album in particular benefits from the live sessions.
Thanks for a great reaction Dean. It's always great watching someone discover Radiohead, and all the more when they're a good musician and can really appreciate what goes into it. KoL has always been a favorite Radiohead album. Coming from a jazz background, it delivers me more amazing moments than any other album except maybe In Rainbows. This basement session just blows me away.
Thank god they gave us these Basement sessions. Absolutely flawless and amazing. I always thought Radiohead songs were the result of layering in the studio and included ‘non-instrument’ sounds. They destroyed that premise in these videos and I couldn’t love it more. I’ve watched the In Rainbows Basement video on endless repeat.
They had yet to record The Daily Mail before this recording, which is likely why they are still working it out. And the live take you see is the version they would release. (It wasn’t on the King of Limbs album.)
Pretty sure they pinched Portishead drummer for this session. The sound on this album always reminds me of Thom saying the only innovation in music was in dance music in the last 30 years. I’m paraphrasing here but he used to DJ in his youth. You can definitely here Aphex Twin and Orbital too name a few.
Yep, that's Clive Deamer, he toured with them around this time as well. Great drummer, always loved his style and he's played with quite a few people over the years - Radiohead, Portishead, Roni Size, Goldfrapp to name a few.
@@deanwolfechannel Not officially disbanded, it just seems like they're... waiting for inspiration to play as a full band again? Waiting/busy with personal projects for while now, since their last live shows and recordings as a full band have been some 5+ years ago 😅 IDK, many fans have given up hopes completely, but I think if the band members thought that there's no way they'd want to participate in RH again, they'd say so and disbanded already, so I think there's a solid chance they could return to do something together one day, maybe one final album, maybe one last tour before they go
This record from the studio is not one of my favorites but the more organic sound with still some electronic elements makes this album so good this show is pretty high on my list of great things musically to watch/listen.

On one of their tours they used to start shows with a weird cover of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' called 'Where Bluebirds Fly'. It's worth checking out because it's the polar opposite to the original. It flips hope for the future into a feeling of hopelessness.
'The Daily Mail' is so Beatles-like... but that's a good thing, I fucking love The Beatles 🔥 It's still distinctly Radiohead, of course, that with the tasteful and interesting dissonance, the lyrics, Thom's voice, etc, it just also makes me think of Abbey Road with how cinematic it sounds
hehe, I remember seeing like one of your first radiohead reactions where you explained that you weren't a big fan and how you never really got into them. now look where we're at. can't escape their greatness if you sit down and give em a chance. daily mail is orgasmic indeed.
I have listened to King of Limbs only once too,but saw the basement perfomance a couple of times,i think i prefer it it is also nice to watch them play.
