Ostensibly the first "electronic" instrument. Invented 100 years ago by Martenot, an ex-soldier (radio communications) in the French army during WWI who would hear strange sound waves over the radio. He decided after the war to develop a musical instrument to simulate the sounds that inspired him. The OM went out of production in the mid-80s, so Jonny had duplicates made that he could take on the road.
One of my favourite live performances of any artist or group on SNL. The music and specifically his performance just captivates you . It's hard to turn away because you just wanna see where he's gonna go with it.
Highly Agree, I saw this live back in the day and was blown away. I come back to this song performance every now and then and love every moment of it. The live horns give it the magic.
BY FAR my favorite Radiohead song, and I love most of their songs. Just the utter abandon, controlled chaos. So reflective of a planet whose humans know it's whirling them down the drain.
Love anything with a prominent BARI SAX. Wonderful chaos. That could serve as the National Anthem for either country. I have read that REM is a huge influence, good catch. Prog progressing, yes! Great use of horns.
I had given up on them after I heard “Fake Plastic Trees”. I turned on SNL after the introduction to the band. I sat through one of the lamest set of sketches and Weekend update, just to figure out who they were. I was in shock that it was Radiohead. The second song was Idioteque. I was fan immediately.
Ha, you guys would love the 'Kid A' album (especially Nathan), which in fact has a few purely electronic tracks. It was a complete turn away from their guitar-based alt-rock before and actually upset/disappointed some of their fanbase, who were hoping for 'OK Computer part 2'. It is certainly one of their most inventive and daring releases, and the first Radiohead album I bought myself.
The fact that Kid A was number one on the billboard charts is crazy. I remember at the time all my friends were split. But fans were split over OKC as well. Lots of people wanted “The Bends pt 2.”
The Ex bought me this on day of release as I was already a fan. I sat there and laughed my Arse off at the whole album. I thought they had gone mad. Beautifully, majestically mad. I love this band like no other.
It’s been described as “the biggest left turn in rock history” and I think that phrase captures it nicely. I bought it on the day of release and was profoundly disappointed having seen them twice on the ok computer tour. I only started to appreciate the genius of that left turn more latterly and by god it _is_ a staggeringly mountainous achievement. I love it. Proud to admit I was very very wrong. In Rainbows is equally mighty.
Jonny Greenwood is up for the Golden Globes this year, and is a hot ticket for the Oscars, for the music scores he composed for The Power of The Dog and Spencer. He was on the list a few years ago for Phantom Thread, and he also composed the score for There Will Be Blood and The Social Network. So he's a busy man.
Michael Stipe was a huge influence on Thom and Radiohead, especially for Kid A but also dealing with the fame of rockstardom. He told Thom to shut the blinds and say “I’m not here this isn’t happening” which Thom put as lyrics on How to Disappear (Credit Talking With Tom RU-vid channel)
The only thing missing here is that Jonny's radio samples he's doing when he's not using the Odnes Martenot are not very prominent in this mix. Some of the other live cuts of this track are astounding. The Reading and the Bonnaroo ones stand out.
Back when they straight looked and sounded like an alien ship had landed with a killer band. Why the Idioteque performance from this night is banned on YT is beyond me. Favorite footage of the band ever.
I guess I'll be helpful instead of a dick like the uploader that replied 🤷♂️ If you Google "SNL 2000 archive Kate Hudson" you'll find a VHS recording of the full episode with music performances. Unfortunately, it's not the same quality as the one that used to be on RU-vid, but it's better than nothing.
Greeting to both of you guyz!! Today, I'd love to suggest a brand new song entitled "Here Comes The Storm", from the French Canadian Black Metal band named "Obscurcis Romancia". Thank you very much and have a nice day!!!
Yes, God Save The Queen is the British national anthem, but it's complicated and many people in the member nations of the UK would choose different songs than that for their real national anthem.
The irony of busting Nathan’s balls for knowing the name of “our national anthem” after calling our national anthem “Stars and Stripes” is hilarious. “The Star Spangled Banner,” Ryan.
