Radix - Freeze Dried Food for Camping & 4WD Review - Can I survive & thrive on it?

Freeze Dried Food for 4wd and Camping, for at least two years I had a Back Country freeze-dried meal in my vehicle for emergency rations and as survival food, a few months ago I thought I better try it before it's going past its shelf live for another year and I was quite surprised how good it tasted. Fast forward a few months and I was preparing for our Canning Stock Route when I realised my Fridge would not be big enough to store all my food and I also did not want to rely solely on my freezer for food in case of a failure in the desert. So I looked a bit deeper in Freeze dried camping food and spend a lot of time researching the different providers. I ended up liking a small NZ company called Radix Nutrition the most because of their uncompromising food philosophy for quality of ingredients and food and well-balanced meals designed by a nutritionist. Here are Dave and my experience using freeze-dried survival food on our 3 1/2 weeks Canning Stock Route 4x4 trip.

hey shoutout from across the ditch🇳🇿 and yes we love the Radix over here quick and easy ready to eat no fuss easy clean up, although we do love our fresh food fish straight off the beach or pig hunt or stag straight out of the bush which is normal practice over here in NZ but sometime after long days even weeks on the tracks we just don't have the energy or the time to pull out the rods or go for a quick hunt let alone cock it. But that's when Radix comes handy pretty tasty for what it is and that most of the ingredients and natural because of our laws Radix cheap tasty and full off nutrients. Keep up the videos where hooting📯 for yahhhs cheers🇳🇿

Great looking meals. I’m working my way through the Campers Pantry range. I carry freeze dried supplies for impromptu bush walks and redundancy.

Greetings. I came across your vid after watching someone else promote the product. Your review is very honest and comprehensive. Just a bit of assistance with language if I may. Freez is spelt Freeze. Also, we STIR food not STEER it. Keep up the good work. Cheers mate.

I appreciate that! Change the spelling typo, to late to change stir unfortunately, my english is only self taught so unfortunately not perfect.

Just got back from my trip and have to agree the meals are very good. That's not to say it's the same as a fresh cooked meal of course, but the taste and balanced nature of the meals is to a high standard and I did not feel hungry afterward. The berry mix for brekky was my favourite! I will be ordering more from Radix.

Love the Teutonic consideration of bowel movement and what it means. Far too matter of fact for us skippies to consider and think about to contemplate. When out and about, it is a major consideration. Always we have a chilly/spicey thing to cook when camping but in reality, we want something "Bowel Safe" so we don't shit our selves to death without the luxury of a porcelain loo to back up that decision... I take fresh fruit + veg to keep the body going on this trip, with vacuum packed "this trip"and freezer dried for "just in case, longevity in the car" scenarios. Thank you Stefan. Cheers Gaz
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 5 лет назад
lol yea I like my chilly as well worked quite well with Radix. Yes also carried some fresh fruit etc. but if you spend 3-4 weeks out there that becomes hard. For me, a mix of frozen home pre-cooked and Freeze-Dried seems to be perfect, provides variation means I have back up even if a fridge should fail but I also know I can have dinner at any time with little work but hot water.

You can definitely survive on it but, from long distance hikes, it becomes a bit tedious after a while & it removes a lot of the pleasure of eating in epic camp spots so is worth having as much of a mix as you can take. If you're aiming to do it long term, look into getting a food dehydrator, or borrowing one, so you can home cook your favourite meals & take them along rather than purchasing what you think may work. Lots of thru-hikers do this so it's definitely a common way of doing food for remote travel. Other than that have a look at cryovac based fresh or cooked food portions as they can last a decent amount of time even in a fridge. Personally I'd be cryovaccing lots of cooked meals flat & storing upright in your freezer like a filing system.
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 5 лет назад
Yes cryovac is what I usually do, I bought a food dehydrator but to be honest to much effort for me I rather buy them.
@gaj5701
@gaj5701 5 лет назад
@@AlloffroadAu Yep, it definitely takes up a heap of time so buying is often an easier option. Still, it's worth it if you have a favourite couple of dishes you cook at home so you can bring that unique taste along as well as the purchased meals. Making things like fruit leather is definitely a good use for a dehydrator as they're an awesome nutritious snack item 👍 Looking forward to the series & see you've bought an awesome chair too 😃

I can tell you now I have looked in to these meals and the aussie ones her in wa and radix is by far the cheapest. Other brands done here in Australia are around 3 times the cost per meal than radix nutrition.

I think I would prefer to use Australian made freeze dried and dehydrated meals such as Strive food which is made in Hobart. magnificent meals they also make a full vegetarian and gluten-free and you can also get different ingredients is added to order which means you can custom make your meals as you want them. Even campers pantry dehydrated meals are very good made in by food nutritionist and even used by the Australian army and made just outside Deloraine in Tasmania. Go Australian made
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 5 лет назад
Haven't tried Strive seems to be a much smaller range but can't really comment, Campers Pantry has far more additives then Radix and the ingredients seem to be less selected. But yes, in general, I also like Australian made where I can.

I have tried these before, but honestly I prefer the ones I was using on our high country trip, the Kwik n Easy meals, still not cheap at around $10 per meal, but you get food no different to what you would cook yourself, the only water it requires is the water you boil the package in (which can be reused), and they also require no refrigeration, and have a 16 month shelf life. Bonus is that they're Australian made.
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 5 лет назад
Haven’t tried them yet, seems like you need to carry carbs additionally like rice or noodles and quite a few numbers in the food but may have to give it a try. Variety is always good.

First thing that pricked my ears is you don't cook much and frequently buy take away ???? So immediately a flag is raised . Have no idea where your buy $16 hamburgers from ??? Your getting reamed by your hamburger man and comparing this price wise to the freeze dried makes no sense . With regard to the labelling , I think this product is made for hikers doing maybe 2-4 day trips , so not looking through dozens of meals on a 21 day trip . I do appreciate they would be handy as a back up / emergency meal but having a fridge , vehicle can't understand why you would bother with this type of food .I enjoy cooking and making the meal is half the fun , I would much rather vac seal meals made by myself than eat this but each to their own . Interesting vid and if I feel the need to eat freeze dried food I will give them a try .
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 5 лет назад
hey mate, yes at home the wife usually cooks as she enjoys it more, lunch I often eat out Sushi or Thai however that is not available in outback town so it usually is a pie or steak burger. If you watch my videos you will see that in the past 100 trips I did cook on each trip and prepared my food before the trip and then Cryovaced it. As explained in the video creating content means far less time and my fridge is not suited for 3 weeks of frozen food so this seemed like a good addition to frozen food (and it was)
