On the day we remember the sacrifice of the ‘Few’, this rarely-seen before interview gives an insight into the experience of the Battle of Britain pilots.
In this interview, Wing Commander Roland Prosper "Bee" Beamont, CBE, DSO*, DFC* talks about his experiences during the Second World War with Group Captain (Retd) J P (Phil) Dacre MBE DL RAF at the RAF Staff College, Bracknell (April 1991).
Wing Commander Beamont served as a fighter pilot with Fighter Command from the start of the War until he was shot down and captured in October 1944 on his 492nd operational mission. After the War, Wing Commander Beamont went on to become a leading test pilot on aircraft such as the Meteor, Vampire, Canberra and Lightning as well as writing several books.
Further information about his career can be found on the Battle of Britain London Monument website: www.bbm.org.uk/airmen/beamont.htm
The video is well worth watching in its entirety; however, those interested in his experience during the Battle of Britain should start watching from minute 22:30. Some viewers may find that earphones assist with the 1990s-quality audio recording!

Generations that came after the war owe the generation that fought the war, is totally unmeasurable. We owe them everything.

It is wonderful to me to be able to see and hear these men in their own words. I have known of most of them since my early youth having read extensively about the RAF in WW2 and later. I almost joined the service right out of school in the 1960s but eyesight let me down sadly! Flew civilian however for 25 years as PPL with own light aircraft.

A terrific pilot who wrote well and spoke well. Any RAF enthusiast should read his books.

Beamont's thoughts on leadership, from the squadron through high command level in both war and peace were extraordinarily insightful. I would think that he has one of the most notable resume's in RAF history. It would have been special to hear about the TSR2 and his book “Phoenix into Ashes”. Like Canada's “Arrow” project, it remains one of those subjects to this day that is best left “hush-hush”. A very modest individual indeed, as emphasized by the host near the end of the lecture. Certainly this was one of Bracknell's finest hours.

I could listen to this gentleman all day long. I don't suppose you have the TSR2 interview?

There is footage on this platform of him talking about TSR2, iirc it was a civilian project when he was a test pilot, so unlikely that the RAF would have the footage.

What a wonderful legacy for our current young pilots to have this history to reference. Although I didn't achieve my ambition to become a fighter pilot, like my father, my interest in aircraft translated into becoming an aeronautical engineer working at Westland as a designer. Whilst there, during my apprenticeship, I was fortunate to work under the supervision of the chief mechanical stress engineer. He had been a Typhoon pilot during WW2 and I took every opportunity to encourage him to relate his wartime experiences. Just as Bee said in this video It just didn't happen outside of the squadron. Although, he talked a little about it once or twice, not at length or giving much insight into events or the people he served with. This, unsurprisingly, always left me wanting to know more. So if anyone knows of Bill Wilson his squadron and it's wartime story, I am all ears?!!
