And each pilot would probably have a nickname too. Typically you don’t choose your own nickname, someone, (possibly the FCI) would determine the nickname and a name badge would appear with that nickname on it.

@@martinmckowen1588 I think you're missing the point. The Aus pilots gave themselves pretentious tacticool snake names so when the Brits came to visit they called themselves after something that is famous for killing snakes.

I'm from Liverpool, England and my first job after graduating from University was for a NASA subcontractor in Casper, Wyoming in 1995. My boss asked me to go to a round-table conference in Casper and we were all given a pad and pencil to take notes. I kept writing things down incorrectly so I looked around the room until I saw a guy diagonally opposite me (about 10 ft away) with what I was looking for so I called him and said... "Excuse me, can you pass me the rubber?" Everyone stopped and looked and me. The guy I was calling (as well as some women) started blushing so I said, it's that thing next to your glass of water. He picked it up and passed it to me from across the table. Anyway, I said "thank you" but I didn't know what they hell happened so when I got back to the office, I told my boss who studied and worked with some British guys in Tennessee and as he was laughing, he said "a rubber in the United States is slang for a condom". Here in the UK, a rubber is an eraser.

As an ex Fishhead (1978-99) in the days before the RN had name tallies, I was in the US Naval Base in Virginia as the frigate was in STANAVFORLANT. We were invited to a social event at a USN Captain's house. We were told to make name tallies. It was time to take the piss. I was LT Hans Von Fartengerzordenplatz III Jnr RN. Cant remember how many times people asked the origin of that name. Gave them a different story everytime.

This brings to mind something else: Americans will be naming their foreign interventions like "Operation Righteous Eagle" or "Operation Infallible Freedom". The British will name theirs aggressively random things like "Operation Oblique" or "Operation Norbert".

The operation to retake South Georgia in the Falklands war was named Operation Paraquet, which I had to look up but means a small slender parrot. The largest operation of the war, the landings at San Carlos were named Operation Sutton after a leafy suburb of London. Desert Storm was Operation Granby, Bosnia was Op Grapple and the 40 year operation in Northern Ireland was Operation Banner. Operation Lucky Alphonse was the mission against EOKA in Cyprus. The brilliantly fought confrontation with Indonesia in Borneo mid 60s was named Operation Claret, an unfortunate handle as Claret is common solider slang for something covered in blood.
@wineandwaistcoats
@wineandwaistcoats 17 дней назад
Yeah, the British learned this lesson from the Germans always using Teutonic/Norse mythology for their project and operational names and were usually able uncover what the project was because the name more or less spelled it out for them. Besides, it appeals to the British sense of humour - like naming an innovative armoured fighting vehicle after a water tank in WW1.

Funniest story ever was when a newly arrived american man scheduled his first conference with his team of 40 people, 80% of them were women over 40... he looks everyone square in the eyes, rubs his hands together and confidently states " OKAY PEOPLE, LET'S GET DOWN AND SHAG" In American " let's talk" In English " let's have wild sex" Mortified doesn't even come close to how he felt when finally someone regained enough composure to explain his faux pas

" Neatishead can you call Base ops at Mildenhall , We have Forgotten our call signs ?" Ring Ring "Mildenhall we have 2 of your Aircraft on radar they have forgotten their call signs": without a Pause :- "Stupid One And Stupid Two" so Stupid one and Stupid Two did several Bombing runs on Ranges around Britain. Flying at the Airlines one of the more interesting co-pilots to fly with was a Marine A4 pilot call sign (nickname, whatever) "Buzz". Buzz had some great stories and my favorite one was a "naming ceremony" a AF pilot got when he checked into a Navy Training Squadron on an exchange tour. Said AF hot shot, callsign SierraHotel or some cool name checks in with the Squadron Ops Officer, a Marine Captain. AF pilot introduces himself and announces his call sign as GUNNER or ACE or some such hot shot handle. The Marine CAPT unimpressed looks up and announces "nice to have you aboard and from know on we will call you GUMBY. The next dinning out GUMBY's wife is confused that all the other pilots are calling him GUMBY and not using his AF Naming Ceremony official call sign. Thus the Navy/Marine naming tradition, you just up and get stuck with a nickname the other pilots decide is yours.

Very early in my military career my unit played host to a contingent of USAF A-10 pilots. Anytime they were moving around the camp, wherever they went, British Soldiers would dive into bushes or take cover behind trees, some even ran away screaming....During the 1991 invasion of Iraq, a USAF A-10 destroyed 2 British Army Warrior IFVs...Soldiers have a long memory for things like that! For the period of the pilots visit, Soldiers also adapted callsigns, such as Dogturd, Flapjack, Pancake and Ringpull. The RSM begrudgingly accepted 'Tachelord', the man had a magnificent moustache.

Worked a warehouse job where the boss was a retired Navy pilot and gave everyone callsigns. New hires were always FNG, which they had until they proved themselves and got a good callsign. However, he reserved the acronym UAMT - pronounced You-Am-Tee, for the guys who couldn't cut it. Legally, it meant Untrainable, Accident-prone, Misrepresentation, Theft, the four reasons they'd get canned. It actually meant "Useless As Man Tits".

Naming ceremonies is the AF way. The Navy, at least when I was in, employs the, "Do something dumb to earn a callsign". However when I left active in 2012 things had changed a lot. The callsign police were out in force, the RAG skipper took all the callsigns off the jets due to "leadership".
