This is the third of a selection of about thirty gat compositions out of several hundred preserved and taught by Ustad Irfan Khan, the hereditary 'khalifa' or head, of one of the founding schools of sarod music, the Lucknow-Shahjahanpur Gharana.
The objective of this presentation is to take this timeless treasure from the past -- dating from around 1820 to the late 20th century -- and to give it a contemporary voice. Arnab Chakrabarty, one of the most renowned sarod artists of the present times, started learning this material from Ustad Irfan Khan in 2017. Himself a disciple of the late Dr. Kalyan Mukherjea and Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, Chakrabarty comes from a lineage that employs a set of techniques and voicing roughly analogous to those used by Irfan Khan and his family. This ensures the compatibility necessary to retain the innate aesthetics of the music while still presenting it in the artist's own way.
The artist gratefully acknowledges funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as strong support from the Small World Music Centre and Aga Khan Museum, Toronto, throughout this recording project. Without this support, it would not have been possible to present this music with such production values.

Dear Arnabji, I have been listening to your Gats since quite a few years and trying to deploy them in Bansuri 😁. i want to thank you for a vey soulful approach to sharing the melody. What i find refreshing is your unique style stays away from usual gimmickry for “ wah wah”. BUT like this Nand and your Hameer there’s melody and soul in your Gats leading to “aah”. Dhanyvad and Shubhkamnae 🙏🏼

@@Beemrod Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment. I just let my mind go where the raga tells it to. Glad you find this material useful, and that you plan to use it in your own music!

@@sarode the freshness is i think due to your perhaps evolution with a physical distance from normal day to day circuit of Indian Classical music and its rat race. Your approach is fresh keep at it and i would be amiss if i did not mention the very first Gat of yours that i heard which started my appreciation for your musical soul. I am.also evolving but there is no rush. With "chain" which i find in your style. CHAYANAT 🎵🎵🎵
