Join us in part 2 of 3 for our RAGBRAI adventure. If you missed the last video, RAGBRAI stands for the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa and was in its 49th year in 2022.
In this episode, we cover Days 2-4 (Ida Grove to Pocahontas, Pocahontas to Emmetsburg, and Emmetsburg to Mason city). We also complete OUR FIRST CENTURY RIDE EVER! Yes that's 100 miles on a bike in one day.
Find out if Kari's E-bike was able to complete this long ride!
**Hi, I'm Tyler and my wife Kari and I are traveling physical therapists. We started Roadtrippingpt as a way to share our adventures with family and friends as we traveled the county working various assignments. Traveling as a career was never the plan, but it found us! Having lived in 7 different states, we wanted to document and share the beauty that is the United States**
If you enjoyed this video, please like and subscribe, leave a comment, say hi! Stick around for the finale as well.

Well done guys! Giving battery status updates throughout the ride was awesome. Hats off to Kari, i ride an ebike and know that the weight of the bike itself is a challenge when using no to little assist. Im glad there was plenty of Gluten Free foods available during your rides to accommodate you considering you need fuel for these long days.

I lived in Cedar Rapids my whole life and it always surprises me how world renown ragbrai is. Hopefully bike culture gets even more popular here and they build a lot more trails because, riding on the roads during non-ragbrai times is tantamount to a death wish.

It’s quite amazing how many people from all over come to do RAGBRAI. I didn’t think of that, but there wasn’t a lot of room on the shoulder for bikers. Probably pretty dangerous.

Good for you 👍. Hopefully you stay strong and keep being able to ride. It was definitely harder on my gravel bike compared to a rode bike and I think for our third year my wife may rent a road bike because it’s just too hard on an e bike conserving the energy and pedaling 60 pounds.

@TylerandKari
@TylerandKari Год назад
Thank you, appreciate the comment. That’s exciting about being your first one. My best advice would be consecutive day training rides. We did only 500 miles training before Ragbrai and multiple days in a row would have prepared us more. It was the sitting that became tough by day 5 and 6. Otherwise, so much fun. We loved it. We will be there and filming again! Maybe we will see you out there!

Great video! I might have missed it but did you mention what make/model the eBike was? i'm excited to learn more since 100 miles on your battery was great! Can you share that info?
@TylerandKari
@TylerandKari Год назад
Thank you. I actually think we may have forgot to mention it. She has a specialized turbo Vado 4.0. On the specialized website they estimate it's max mileage is "Up to 90 miles". I think it can vary greatly, but we practiced specifically for the 100 mile day by having her work to use the e-power only when absolutely required (going up hills, directly into head wind). Otherwise, she would pedal quite a bit without e power. It lastly much longer than we anticipated, that's for sure. Almost immediately when we would reach the top of a hill, she would turn off the battery to conserve it.

I want to know what model of the turbo vado 4.0 you were riding on your century ride. Was it the turbo 4.0 SL that weighs 36 lbs or the regular 4.0 that weighs 58 lbs. How much battery did you end up with at the end of the century. Congratulations you made it to the end. I like the way you conserved battery.
@TylerandKari
@TylerandKari Год назад
That was the turbo Vado 4.0 regular that weighs 58 pounds. I remember because I had to buy the heavy duty bike rack to hold that thing lol. At the end of the century she had somewhere around 40% left. Maybe a little more. Thank you! She definitely trained with the e power off as much as possible in preparation for the century day.

Great video! I’m going to go to my first ragbrai next year! I hope to see you guys there! I wanted to ask if there are charging stations for your bike to charge when the day ended. Also were people friendly about the whole ebike at this event? My partner would like to go but she does not ride bicycles this long at all.
@TylerandKari
@TylerandKari Год назад
Thank you. Awesome to hear that. We are going to try our best to make sure we go next year and will plan on it! So I’m not sure to what extent there are charging stations if you aren’t with a charter or team. We paid extra to join pork belly venture which included nightly showers, nightly meals, am coffee, and designated charging stations for phones, other devices and specifically e bikes. I think many charters offer these services, but we went with pork belly specifically to ensure Kari could charge nightly. Also, there is a service that charges and exchanges batteries daily during the ride. Not sure the name of that one though. Overall, we found many people had no issue with the e bike. There were quite a few people on e bikes. We made sure to maintain just an average speed and my wife used it to keep up with my speed or the flow of bike traffic. We felt the e bike was a great choice and ensured my wife could enjoy the ride with me.

11:58: "I'm cold, I'm wet, its raining." That grey shirt your wearing, it bet it's cotton. Cotton is the worst material to wear for outdoors activates. It gets wet, it stays wet, and it doesn't keep you warm. If in the mountains cotton can literally kill you that's why they say, "Cotton kills." I've gotten rid of all my cotton clothing, I suggest you do the same. Bad stuff.

I wish people would stop spreading the pickle juice lie. It's not sodium and calcium salts that are going to work, it's magnesium and potassium that you want. So a milkshake beats out a banana for potassium, and greens have loads of magnesium. Legumes and sweet potatoes are also great ride food choices.
@TylerandKari
@TylerandKari Год назад
As someone who has done endurance races before I never had heard of the pickle juice until Ragbrai. We looked into it after the ride, definitely could be some better choices to prevent cramping. Like the suggestions!
