Zac’s father was a Chicano artist and activist. Zac got a lot of his ideology, partly from his father. I think he grew up in Orange Country so he experienced racism and classism from a lot of people who felt he was the help or a hired hand who didn’t belong there.

Yep. The political direction of most of those in their youth is usually either in concert or in direct opposition as a response to those views held by their parents. His views were also shaped by the music he grew up with - as a SoCal skate punk in the mid-late 80s/early 90s, the punk, post punk and hardcore he listened to was very political. Bands like Bad Religion, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, and east coast stuff like Minor Threat, Gorilla Biscuits, Fugazi, and Bad Brains. Throw in the early hip-hop of Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim, NWA, KRS etc... and it’s obvious how that music shaped his politics as a young man.

It says "Arm the Homeless"... a callback to "This machine kills fascists", which was written by Woody Guthrie (a very important folk singer, writing "This Land is Your Land" among others) on his guitar back in the 40s.

Also, his mother had a PhD in Anthropology and was probably able to impart knowledge about societal constructs that most people don't even learn in school, much less at home from their parents.

Growing up, Zack lived in both Orange County and East LA. He faced racism from the rich white people -including his teachers-in the OC because he’s Chicano, and ostracism from people in LA because they thought he was “too white”, never mind that he’s 3/4 Chicano-on a cultural level, he was shut out. On top of this, his grandpa fought in the Mexican revolution and his dad was an artist who had a mental breakdown when Zack was about 11, leading to some physical and emotional pain. And he’s someone who just has an empathetic nature towards people-if he didn’t care so much, he’d be less angry.

Zack's father was an artist and activist. He is of chicano descent and his grandfather was an agricultural worker who fought in the Mexican Revolution. That's definitely where he gets a lot of the spirit from. He was also raised in a very conservative, wealthy and racist area, so I'm sure his own experiences definitely informed his thinking as well

Hey Ahmad! Love you and your videos. Rage is my favorite band of all time - I have multiple tattoos dedicated to them. You asked about Zack’s ideological influences; how he came to have such anger and militance. His grandfather was a Zapatista revolutionary fighting the oppression of agrarian workers in Mexico at the hands of Mexican elites and U.S. imperialists. Zack’s father was an artist as well. He was radicalized at an early age and it was reflected in his work. However, this contributed to a regression in his emotional state, and he descended into some dystopian cult/religion dogma. He then went into solitary exile to wait for human death, so that his spiritual life and journey could begin. Zack speaks about this narrative of his relationship with his father in “Born of a Broken Man”, and it’s really the only song he wrote without militant socialist expression. There are videos of Zack in his private life, through both interviews and biographical content in Mexico and the US. He is incredibly cordial and gentle, and it is evident that despite his radical values, he cherishes and appreciates his people, his family, and his culture - he recognizes culture specifically as integral for Latinx people, needed to give strength and longevity the oppressed in their fight against global capitalism and white supremacy. He is a revolutionary, inspired by the Black and Brown heroes who predicated his legacy - Franz Fanon, W.E.B. Dubois, Malcom X, Fred Hampton, etc.. His radical nature and actions exude integrity and authenticity, and, most importantly, those attributes are consistent in his platform as a prominent artist engaging in revolutionary actions. Rage didn’t break up - Zack left. It was devastating to the others, and when Audioslave was established, it is more accurate to say that Zack’s spot was being filled with Chris Cornell as a *replacement*, rather than them forming a new group. In the later years of their tenure, Zack thought that the other members were losing militance in their protest and their activism. He left when the group was not creatively fulfilling his radical interests, and their status as a group to influence movements and activism were neglected. I hope you are well and safe! Please do more Rage videos; they make days easier, and I sincerely thank you for your content. If you think I’m qualified, I can give you several more bar-breaking Rage songs 😎

De la Rocha's paternal grandfather, Isaac de la Rocha Beltrán (1910-1985),[6] was a Mexican revolutionary[7] who fought in the Mexican Revolution and worked as an agricultural laborer in the U.S. De la Rocha would later see the hardships his grandfather endured reflected in the struggles of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation.[8] De la Rocha's parents divorced when he was six years old, and he moved from East Los Angeles to Irvine with his mother, who attended the University of California at Irvine and ultimately earned a PhD in anthropology.[9] De la Rocha later described Irvine as "one of the most racist cities imaginable" and said that "if you were a Mexican in Irvine, you were there because you had a broom or a hammer in your left hand".[10]

Fans point to Pinkpop '93 for good reason but Morello said the craziest crowd he has expereinced as fan or performer was Santiago, Chile. Those videos are poor quality compared to PPop but unbelievable in terms of crowd insanity. Check out Santiago, Killing in the Name multi-cam. Then check out Santiago, Entrada y Testify. Another great live performance with better video is Finsbury Park, Testify.

Yop Bro. Zach built his rage during his childhood effectively. Like je said in that song, he is a "bastard son". Zach Didnt grow up with his family,he was in the hand of the social services, moving from a family to another one until he came and staid in Los Angeles. during all these years je learned by himself about his proper history and roots, enlarging his mind about the life conditions of the unheard, the poor, and the ones who keep sleeping and are no more in capacity of rebelling. He is a brouter with a furious mind, constructive rage inside.. Zach is awake since he was born I guess. He is all for the people, he is a great lyricist and also a great poet. Take care bro. One Love from Paris, France

Poverty made Zach. Seeing NAFTA’s (North American Free Trade Agreement) effects in Mexico also was a big thing since it impoverished that country and created a not only worse poverty, but ppl trying to run away and immigrate to the US. That ain’t to say he is anti immigration, he’s pro immigration but, didn’t like the things done to force people to run for their lives. He also hated/hates cops and the Rodney King issue. A lot of what made me an anarchist and listen to a lot of their music was the things they talked about. Tom Morello (the guitarist who be going wild on the guitar )is a libertarian anarchist or socialist.

who knows what made Zak the way he is but at the time we were dealing with alot of political Corruption and Police were killing many black people. this is about the same time Cop Killer came out and was banned, of course that means everyone had it. It was a time of Corruption and uncertainty. Today seems to be way worse, its unfortunate that the youth of today dont seem to have the same awareness or upheaval that we had back then.
