He is there strictly for shield cover for the back row. Most of the time enemies won't get to attack, but if they do, that is why we have him.

Is the PvP split across the difficulties ?

Arena pvp doesn't take into account difficulties. I had my old arena team from expert as my defense, even on True Zenorian mode it transfered.. So I am assuming the stats scale ect depending on the mode you play.
