CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Howard E. Rollins Jr.) prays before exiting the Morgan Library, where he hid from the police.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Milos Foreman's cinematic adaptation of E.L. Doctrow's sprawling pop-culture epic Ragtime follows a variety of characters whose lives intertwine during the earliest years of the 20th century. Brad Dourif plays the meek young brother in a wealthy family who ends up helping Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Howard E. Rollins) when the proud black man stands up to the racism that surrounds him with a criminal act that leads to a standoff with a police commissioner (James Cagney - making his return to the big screen after fifteen years away). Secondary characters include a street artist (Mandy Patinkin) who gets his foot in the door of the nascent film business, and a flighty young woman (Elizabeth McGovern) who inspires men who desire her to violence. Randy Newman composed the score, which included a song that earned him his first Oscar nomination.

Great actor, great performance. It's a tragedy how Coalhouse Walker went out when what he originally wanted was simple justice. Powerful film.

Do you know what the No.1 civil rights issue was in the U.S. at this time was? Lynching. There was no justice for Black people at this time.

Howard Rollins was one of the best actors in the 80s and 90s but a tragic life. I wish he was here today.

It's criminal that Howard Rollins didn't win an academy award for his role.

Nah, what's criminal was how his career went downhill after this truly superb performance. People have always raved about Denzel, but - as this movie will attest - I think Rollins was more powerful

It was a tough competition that year! He was up against the legendary Jack Nicholson for his terrific portrayal of Eugene O’Neill in Reds, Ian Holm for Chariots Of Fire and John Gielgud, who was just phenomenal in Arthur and won for it.

Its the greatest African american performance in history. Coal house Walker plead to be a man! " I am a man speech. Why can't we obtain dignity and respect for our families. I have obtain great success in my life, famous acclaimed pianist. Wealth but not dignity and respect to be a man for my family.

Coalhouse probably figured that they were going to kill him. Talking to God calmed him. That's why he doesn't act surprised in any way after he was shot. He stood straight and tall & took it like a man. Even taking a few extra final steps as if nothing happened.

some tragically underated movie that stands on its own; precious performances, the majestic James Cagney in his last performance and a soundtrack worth of an Oscar alongside one for the main character

This movie is so awesome, and so relevant for today's times, in more ways than one. Coalhouse is Black Lives Matter, he's the mass-shooter on the rampage, he's the rightfully depressed man told to pipe down and take a pill and ignore his indignation. What a shame this movie didn't come out now! Just because it's 30 years old, it's forgotten. Or is it too truthful and intense for doped up contemporary Americans, who seem to think their films are the greatest because they feature 15 minute sex scenes?

Rollins and Allen gave up their lives for no reason. Rollins needed to let it go. Not saying it's right, but the odds were so stacked against him, he didn't have a prayer of winning.
@kepecos

That could be said about a lot of people who stood up for themselves and their families. Honestly people who don’t give up hope are way more respectable than those who judge them for it.
