When ever Roja music comes to ear..It mesmerizes. It's still very difficult to believe his first album is 28years old. Now I'm close to 50, when I hear roja I feel 20plus. That's the magic of ARR music.
@giri kotte again disagree.. his fusion of western instrumental music with Indian instrumental plus Indian vocal melodies is something which purely western musicians can't even dream of creating... if he was a b grade musician as per western standards he would not have won oscar and then again nominated for Oscar 2 years later... his song "if I rise" should have won the oscar.. the song which won was "we belong together" from toy story 3 which is a horrible song with ghisa pita music..
@giri kotte are you an Indian or not??... The world places him on the likes of Zimmer and u grade him b graded....may be his name Rahman hurts u....150 films...near to 1000 songs ...85,,% of the songs supr hits....say any western composer of the same volume of work...it's easy to say... that's why Ilayaraja and arr are legends...none can come close to their talents...making hit songs like idlis..... maestro sss
It's the common characters of legends they talk less and do much more...Fame itself comes to the deserved ones.. I feel blessed I'm living in his era.. I call you 'Sir A R Rahman', it automatically comes from the bottom of my heart.. People will come and go, but these creations, what u have done will be cherished forever
I met Rahman Ji for the first time in KL for audio release of "Indira" back in 1995,then in 1996 for Mega concert that rocked Malaysian fans, then after a long gap I had the opportunity to be close to him in Rahman 3D world tour in S'pore, lastly I had a chance to dine with him last week on Enthiran audio launck in KL, all this while he has been the same down to earth, soft spoken and humble person. This qualities in him is more enviable my many.God bless U Rahman Ji
He was the first person to teach the world how seemingly non-musical entities can actually change the ambience in a song and make the difference between its success and failure. ARR and Sridhar were mutually responsible for each other's success and the greatness they went on to achieve. The world will miss Sridhar as the legend marches on
Rahman is legend not only because he does great music. He is so calm and composed even from the very beginning of his career. Years ago when this interview was shot, everyone including the people who commented on him must have thought him to be another one film wonder. But Rahman was confident in his words that one day he will come up. He is a role model for the new generation - dedication and hard work can take you to unbelievable heights. Thank you very much for uploading this video.
I remember this program Surabhi with Presenter Renuka Sahani and another gentleman presenter. Doordarshan ....that era miss my dad my family, myfriends and those tv time.......Now in 2020 and COVID19 lockdown .............Those 90’s Mr. A.R. @@Ironized_07 Yes correct. India fighting with community based terrorists since long time, now along with that we as and Indian may be in future we need to fight with these language and regional based perverted people (terrorists) also.
Praveen, thanks a zillion for uploading this. This is that interview aftwr which I called up one of my Tamil friends and aske them to get an audio cassette of Roja from Chennai and have been a Rahman fan since that time...

A R Rahman is the GEM of modern India. Thanks a lot for posting this episode of one of the best TV shows India has ever had. Very inspirational person and artist. Salut!
I recall seeing this episode back then in doordarshan.. surbhi used to be fav prog for all ..golden days.. Rahman is undoubtedly best musician we have!
Rahman's entire family was converted to islam. her mom asked a astrologer to suggest an Islamic name for Dilip. The astrologer suggested Abdul Rahman and shorten it to A. R. Rahman. When his mother asked the astrologer why the other initial ‘R’, the astrologer replied “Give him a name with two initials and mark my words, he will grow up to be a great man”. His mother did accordingly. But the A and R would later become Allah Rakha on the suggestion of reknowned composer Naushad Ali.
Not true. Dilip Kumar's post conversion name from the start was Allah Rakah Rahman. Noushad had nothing to do with it. These idiots have erroneously referred to him as Abdul Rahman. He was never known as Abdul Rahman in Tamil.
Used to see surabhi when I was kid...such a reminiscence... loving it... used to hear Roja song in old records.... ohhh those were the days... unforgateble memory of my childhood.... thanks from the bottom of my heart to the uploader...
The person who has filmed this interview has done really a good job....no other interview of ARR is as good as this one...The interviews that come now concentrate a bit too much on his spirituality and such...but this interview is different and concentrates what ARR is best at...His MUSIC ...something which I find missing in interviews now a days...:(
A R Rahman’s that initial era is unforgettable I wish he could stick the way he started. Missing those musics like Roja, Bombay, Muqqala, Rangeela, Dil se, Sathiya, Lagaan etc💖
ya some of them are awesome.....like newyork nagaram, taxi taxi, style etc....even though I am from Mumbai & have no idea at all of Tamil...still I loved them...
Thats why I believe Surbhi was India's first and best Talent hunt show. And Rahman...my god the best part is how honest and perticular he was even in the beginning. Hat's off.
I consider myself to be fortunate to have come to life after Rehman started making music. What a waste of life it would be without his music. Even today, I listen to Roja songs.
This episode of Surabhi came out during those days when Roja was a huge hit and I had watched it some 6-7 times in the theaters. I used to lap up everything that came on TV about Rahman-Roja-Maniratnam-ArvindSwamy. So I distinctly remember this episode of Surabhi too.
This is still so fresh after so many years. It's claimed within a day he got acclaimed, (at that time, truly AR is from Future :D) I say the time has told that AR is time less, an me commenting like this (after so many years, i grew up with it! surely all of you might as well )... Brilliant Guy!
A 26yr old young man, changed the course of the Indian music in a single movie (Roja, which was his first movie), which is considered as one of the top 10 film music score in the history of world cinema Power of youth...stunning
