Raiden is the protector of Earthrealm, and after the second defeat of Shinnok (a main villain in the MK series) he ascended to the status of Elder God. He first appeared in Mortal Kombat (1992) and has been a playable character in every major installment in the series except MK3 (1995). He's selected and trained multiple Earthrealm warriors, and participated directly in the realm's defense. He's a central character in the series and is often seen as a mentor.
Raiden is based off of the Japanese deity Raijin and his name is the alternate spelling. His physical appearance is based off of the character Lighting from the movie 'Big Trouble in Little China' (1986)
