The very first football game that I ever watched was between the Oakland Raiders and the Philadelphia Eagles. At the time, I didn't know that it was the Superbowl. I remember seeing Jim Plunkett. He was the Raiders quarterback general. Because of him and the team, I started watching football. It was exciting to see. So, thank you Mr. Plunkett. Why you are not in the Hall of Fame is beyond me. I watched his last college game when Stanford upset Ohio State in the 1971 Rose Bowl. Stanford was a 2 touchdown underdog, and won 27-17. It cost Ohio State a national championship since top ranked Texas was beaten in the Cotton Bowl by Notre Dame. I am long life New England Patriot Fan, and he did his best with the awful teams the Pats had during the 70's.

I was fortunate enough to have met Jim while I was between the ages of 8 and 11. I lived on the East Side of San Jose. My house was only five blocks away from his childhood home on Emilie Street in San Jose. I used to take his mom things on occasion when my mom asked me to. One day in the summer of 1984, I took Mrs. Plunkett some things that my mom asked me to. Well, I was about to leave to go back home when the doorbell rang. Mrs. Plunkett asked me to get it. I answered it and there standing at the front door was JIM PLUNKETT. We talked for about 30 minutes. I remember my mom calling and YELLING AT ME TO GET HOME. I remember telling Mom that I was talking with Jim Plunkett. Of course, she didn't believe me. I then gave Jim the phone and he settled everything. He then gave me a ride back to my house. Before he left, he posed for a picture with me and gave me an autograph. I still have the autograph today. Jim is a very humble and private man. He's also very unassuming, modest and humble. I think it was the way he was raised by his parents.

I met Mr. Plunkett right after he signed with the Niners, sometime in 1976. I think. Was at work and was getting on the elevator to go to lunch, and there he was. We talked for the trip down to the lobby, and he was a very nice man. He took some HEAVY physical abuse with New England, and more than a few shots as a Niner and a Raider. But he never quit. With a Heisman and two Super Bowl, under his belt, I do NOT understand why he isn't in the HOF. He deserves to be.

A great player! He was part of the gold era of football, when men were men and the hitting was brutal. The team doctors would administer pain killing injections on the sidelines!! The TV broadcasts would show it and the sports brodcasters would talk about it casually. When the Raiders got him from SF, he was so beaten up that the coaches just sat him on the bench to get healthier. He was supposed to be an inexpensive backup QB because, at that time, it was believed that his best days were behind him. But as we all know, he became a hero and a SuperBowl champion twice over. He is certainly HOF worthy.

Great player. Great American. One of my favorite players as a kid. Many thanks to the Raiders Organization (especially Al Davis and Tom Fores) in believing in this fantastic player and bringing him aboard the Raider Nation and enabling the country to see what a great talent can do. He was a perfect fit for the Raiders with his big arm (much better long baller than Ken Stabler). In New England and 49ers, he was always running for his life and never got to shine. The Raiders gave him the protection he needed and the weapons to really shine, and man did he shine, ending up winning 2 superbowls. -- 70's Steelers Fan.

CTE and lawsuits will drastically alter the game in the future. You can miss the good ole days, but it has to happen. Underrated is an overused term, but Jim defines it. Oddly, his style of play didn't seem exciting, but he would have games where he averaged 15 yds per throw. He would out Charger the Chargers. Didn't run well but was effective. He'd hold the ball like a load of bread and loft it high. It seemed like a mid-range pass, until you counted the yard markers and realized he 'floated' it 65 yards.
