When Van Gogh died 1890, he was a complete unknown, his paintings fetching under 10 dollars. So how did his works become some of the most revered and expensive in the world? His sister-in-law Johanna is to thank for that.

That’s utter nonsense. At the time of his death he was starting to get critical acclaim from the art world. To say he was a complete unknown is tripe. People like you are responsible for spreading misinformation. Stick to the truth!

As an art student back in 1980, I spent my first summer reading Van Gogh's volumes of letters. It took me 2 months. Ever since then, some 40 years, I have written articles and blogs asking why Johanna Van Gogh has not been given the credit she deserved. Finally that plea has been resolved. It was about time.
@StefanMedici
@StefanMedici 2 года назад
Theo needs credit too. He bought the paintings and supported his brother emotionally as well as financially. What Johanna did was take Theo's vision of his brother and hang on to it, believe in it, and run with it. You're totally right about her finally getting the credit she very much deserves.

Well Theo's wife Joanna probably needed to make money to live. I read all Vincent letters to Theo. He seemed very self centered and constantly wanting.... and it must have been exhausting for Theo. Such a gd brother. Great doco!

Johanna Bonger knew Vincent was different, she had in her possession his writings on his abilities and discoveries likewise. Mythology’s grip on Vincent is to change as the childhood “Epilepsy” Vincent battled was to dictate his life. Some letters have not been in the public realm at Vincent’s request because he visualized the future. .

I have a friend that is always in mind when I try to imagine Vincent's personality. He's extremely difficult and drinks entirely too much, the difference between the two being Van Gogh's self-driven creativity.

Typical of the hypocrisies and snobbery of the art world that paintings once considered worthless, painted by a madman, are now worth millions.

@kirachan007
@kirachan007 2 года назад
@@goilo888 … actually this is the English pronunciation. A German would not say it that way, since the spelling suggests a throaty sound to the German reader; not an F; Though I believe that nobody who wasn’t born and raised in the Netherlands would be able to pronounce it correctly to be honest.

Simply untrue. The dutch G is also found in german, swiss german, austrian and even the spanish J as in José is quite the same sound.

Art experts can't seem to agree how to pronounce Van Gogh. "Van Goff" and "Van Gock" and "Van Go" are all spoken here. For what it's worth, in another documentary a family heir pronounces it "Van Go."

To be clear : Theo was Vincents agent and only sold 1 paintings of his in his entire life!.... ( Vincents paintings were hidden in a back room ) No. Theo was wildly jealous of his 'poor' brother regardless of the prose he wrote. This is how the world really works.

Not everyone talking here is a van Gogh expert....Terribly bad acting,which is completely unnecessary. And always the wrong photo of him as a youngster,everybody should know that it is Theo,a handsome fellow,compared to Vincent,who kept on wanting more money from his brother,so it's a good thing that Johanna made some money of his legacy. And her maiden name was BONGER,not BONGA!
