Railcam UK were invited by the Diesel and Electric Preservation Group to visit the West Somerset Railway for the Mixed Traction Weekend, 17th & 18th September 2021, to take advantage of some filming opportunities, including cab footage and a front mounted camera to film the entire route, in BOTH directions.
As part of the visit, we were granted privileged access to film 'From the footplate....' and this is a compilation captured on board with the superb crew of Manor Class No. 7823 'Odney Manor, filmed at various locations between Bishops Lydeard and Dunster on Saturday 18th September 2021.
Railcam UK thanks the members of the West Somerset Railway and Diesel and Electric Preservation Group for the warm welcome and support throughout our visit, especially our host Andy Royal for bending over backwards to show us the very best of the WSR.

I always loved the Manors. They were cracking locos.

Our 56XX at Telford steam railway is back and it’s literally the same controlles except it has a Johnson bar instead of the wheel

What’s venting steam in the immediate area where these guys are working? Lots of hissing, and clouds of steam around them. Is this normal? Is it dangerous?

@@bail60163 I noticed in the longer video of the Watchet-Washford section that your driver was having to continually adjust the ejector and brake settings, did this indicate some problem? I wondered if the ejector wasn’t shutting properly or the train pipe pressure wasn’t stabilising.

@@limeyfox it was related to keeping the train pipe at 21" as we had a diesel at the back that runs at that. We on the western engines run at 25".

Why is the driver applying the brake when he’s still got the regulator open?? He shouldn’t be on the footplate.

He was trying to keep the train pipe at 21" as there was a diesel on the rear

Gloves on the footplate. Ugghh. But as a further observation, both men with no jackets on and bare arms. Clearly they have never had any experience on a steam locomotive that proves wearing a jacket is a good idea. I have. Wear a jacket.
