I worked for the railroad for 5 years, two of which were without a contract. I worked through the pandemic without any change in pay or incentive. I worked through the implementation of PSR. These news stories are so shallow that no one would really understand the underlying issues of the workers frustration without more research and in depth reporting. They didn’t even mention the union refusing the contract. Some workers within the industry are getting pushed around more than others but altogether the railroads have gotten rid of so much of the workforce, removed so many engines, consolidated so many yards, stretched budgets to the point of absurdity, put off maintenance, pushed for single man crews, lengthened trains to absurd proportions, torn up track to limit space, eaten up competitors, penalized customers, hamstrung American industry, and put millions of lives at risk, all for increase in stock price.
They did actually mention that they refused the contract. But you’re right: the shallowness of reporting on this is really par for the course in all important events. I’m sure the big investors for railroads also make sure to own the media. It’s such a drag that the people who actually have to do the work are the ones just scraping by while the investor class do nothing but bitch and complain and manipulate.
CSX agreed to the terms. I still think not get a few paid sick days is dumb. But that 5k bouns is nice. At least give a few days of unpaid personal/mental health days without any repercussions.
@@johnnyblaze8439 lol and then a tragedy will happen and they'll have a huge lawsuit on their hands. Ever heard of John dear. Idiot. You're not scaring anyone.
Let the strike commence. These rich greedy companies need to be taught a lesson. That it's the workers who are essential. And let's not pretend that politicians are on the side of fair and balanced. They're not. They're on the side of whoever donates to them. Aka the corporations/investors.
These rich greedy companies are the reason why we have jobs. You are reading the book by its cover. What you don’t know is that these so called greedy companies have offered fair contracts. It’s the union itself that holds everything hostage. There are times a fair contract is offered & the union reps refuse to allow the people they represent vote on it. There are times the workers like the offer but can’t do anything about it because they agreed & sign their rights away to the union reps. Union reps control everything & they have their own agenda.
Her virtue signaler. How about you get into railroad business and do something about it. Be an Elon musk, disrupt the railroads and you can prioritize their wages if you think that’s the key to a successful railroad
@@blueseaview1119 who do you think economy downturns, price increases, skyrocket inflation affect the most? You think the rich will have trouble feeding themselves and their family if all the railroads somehow shutdown lol
These people work their butts off for our modern day conveniences. Give them what they want and shame on this news network for trying to paint hard working people as villains👎
Maybe, just maybe, we start passing some laws to force companies to eat the costs, not pass it on to consumers. We're sitting at corporate having record profits for nearly 50 years in a row, it's time we call a spade a spade and call it what it is; price gouging.
Why should they be forced to eat the cost? The entire point of starting/owning a business is to make money. If the company can't survive then the company collapses. If the company can thrive then they deserve the profits.
Costs go up because the cost to transport the goods goes up. If you want cheaper groceries maybe something like the Keystone Pipeline woulda been nice about now. Lmao better yet produce your own food and good so you don't have to buy them from someone else. If a college degree can't teach you that it's not worth a cent.
@@thegreenwife they get paid a wage. If that wage is too low, they go on strike. Then the company has to decide to either find new workers or raise their pay. The government should have very little power in this (note how i said LITTLE power. There should be some level of intervention to prevent things like Monopolies and make sure Minimum Wages are being paid)
@@genep9327 *THIS* ^^^ omg people have such a hard time grasping that concept. They complain like "omg why is food so expensive" and im just like, bitch, did you just not show up to Economics in high school?
"Consumers" that's what you call people who go to work every day hmmm.. interesting, but for me personally all the businesses should be worried because if it wasn't for "Consumers" how would these businesses prosper... this just goes to show you what they really think of your life's value
How about instead of worrying about how it will "affect you and the economy" you worry more about how workers have been abused in this country for decades. The railworkers union is one of the few really good unions out there in this country.
Oh you pay the extra, it just won't go to the right people. Tax, politicians (bribes i mean campain donations) , ceos, cfo, hr and whatever is left goes to the people actually doing the work.
oh yeah, when we base the price of something on the fact that the workers don't get paid enough and are expected to live on the margins there could be problems if those workers happen to stand up for themselves. it's almost like that's why they used to do union busting, going as far as killing people who dared stand up for their rights. it's almost like this whole country was built by cheap labor and we can't afford anything if we actually paid fairly, let alone if we had to pay for the environment too. what a shame.
RR and parties under the RR labor act don't understand workers don't want money, they want lives. My work at airlines the junior guy is only garunteed 12 days off. Sound good, until those other days are 12-14 hours of stacked schedules of 10 hour rest periods. During your rest you have juuuuust enough time for a quick meal and sleep. Do that 5-6 days, have 1 off (not including a commute) and do it again. I have a buddy in the railroad and it's the same story. The act was supposed to protect the community, not the corporations, which it 100% is the only thing it's doing now.
"Congress may have to step in." Translation: the government politicians owned by capitalist donors may need to crush the workers they pretend to represent if they wish to continue getting a cut of the value earned profit pried free of the people by the mechanisms of crony capatalism.
I thought I was crazy when I heard the government could force a contract. I didn't realize they'd kill us if we didn't want subjection. It's like socialism and fascism had a baby called crony capitalism.
So it’s the workers fault they want to be given proper pay and benefits? Like you said, without their work, the entire country will pay. Sounds like a job that should have a good Sakarya and benefits. I’m sure upper management isn’t suffering. On a side note, don’t make these workers look like they’re in the wrong. Shame on you for doing so.
Consumers are really lucky that there's no national trucking union that would push up costs by requiring fair pay and treatment of truckers by their employers. Very few industries consider a 60 hour work week normal, with no extra pay while ALSO being on call 24/7 AND on travel with no extra travel allowance.
Pretty much every industry, and at the very least the loud minority if not majority mocks people and thinks lesser of them especially some like fast food or market work. It wasnt just that long ago they mocked faat food workers for asking for $12 wages and laughed cuz automation might replace them, but now ever restaurant is understaffed and where I live they're offering $19 an hour at McDonald's lol turns out when you yell at people enough about quitting and getting "real jobs" they quit and get real jobs haha shame we dont appreciate all the people who make our lives easier with basic living wages
You be surprised how bad higher ups will want to get it resolved. They were banking on the union not being united in their vote and standings with the deal but they've had really good union members voted in to represent them and now they are unionizing to turn down offers that stick it to the workers and put more money in the pockets of the higher ups. They don't want it to make it to december 5th because they know the union will go on stike and when things are settled they will have to pay backpay for all union workers. Its a win win for the union now that the workers are united.
Do railroad workers get paid generously? Yes. But no amount of pay is worth the shameful treatment they receive from the railroad corporations. Because they are considered essential workers, the railroad abuse them. On call 24-7? No other industry does that kind of thing except in rare instances, but here, it is the norm. One worker was fired because he had to go to his father's funeral and didn't "give enough prior notice". Railroad workers often have to work when sick, since the railroads can work them any time.
Serious question, wouldn’t it be better to work for a company that treats you fair and square, without needing a political third-party (unions make political donations) to need to come in a broker a fair deal for workers? You guys are very cult like in your unions
@@congresssux9766 if you worked for the Railroad Trust & believe you would totally understand. How would you feel after you attended the Funeral of a loved one & go to return to work only to find out you've been Fired 🔥 for paying your respects ??? This is an extremely bad face headline. Stop trying to get people on the side of these billionaires who don’t give a crap about us. Maybe give these people more money that they actually deserve
It’s always the little guy who suffers. What else is new?!? But I can appreciate the unions fighting so their members can provide for their families… 👍🏾!
They need paid sick leave! They cant even call in sick without pay, its ridiculous what our rail workers put up with! If they decide to strike, i stand with the workers!
It'll get resolved. Profits are more important than Union deals. They'll do anything for it. I hope the Union comes out on top. The grievances are fair. They can afford to pay their employees better and fair.
Every private sector worker in the U$ should go on strike until every major US corporation defaults on their debts, put every major corporation out so small businesses can have a chance again
Sure. But if that's how you feel, maybe you should be the first one to stop drinking Coca-Cola, stop eating Big Macs, and stop buying iPhones. The standard of living you enjoy today is made possible by large corporations. Personally, I feel that's a big problem, but until each one of us is willing to surrender that standard of living, nothing is going to change.
The government is too focused on tech and crypto and increasing interest rates, however, the supply chain industry is going to be the "straw on the camel's back". They even blocked many foreign high-skill supply chain innovators from joining companies because of "visa" reasons issuing them RFE's and causing more bureaucracy. Well, this is why the economy is suffering and most Supply Chain related immigrants are returning to India, China or wherever they're from.
Companies happy to raise prices because "inflation" but can't pay the people that actually do the job... well, you get what you pay (or don't pay) for.
Sorry freaking union. These guys make great money, have killer benefits and still they want more and now with the economy on the brink they wanna strike! Yeah, greed is a wonderful thing isn't it

I had a friend who was a train conductor or engineer (drove the train) in 2010. And she was making 120k per year. So I thought they were very high paid employees.. 😕
40 percent of that is going to insurance and benefits. Might be different depending on the company but I worked for a larger railroad, thought I was making really good money until the benefits were taken out. Your daily life will be similar to a 25 dollar an hour job. But when you retire they have more money than social security. So there is that benefit after you spend 25 years working for them.
@@calebmahoney2448 railroaders pay more money into the retirement fund than social security workers. Rail workers do not pay into social security and do not receive social security. They pay two taxes when they get paid; the first tax is the same a social security and the second tax is what makes rail workers retirement better than social security. Also the federal government can not steal (borrow) from the railroad pension fund as of now.
For pepole who say 24% wow thats not in a lump some thats in small increments plus are dues ,health and everything else we pay going up so not a raise at all ! And 5k bonus is not in a lump as well
I support Unions. We wouldn’t need unions if corporations old treat employees with respect. We tried it their way and workers got screwed over time and time again. Unions provide workers with a total compensation package that is equitable and fair at the chagrin of the billionaire at the top losing a few million. Support unions.
Love how they frame this like a strike is a bad thing. Strike bitches! United we bargain, divided we beg! They have the money to pay up, they just don’t want to. FIGHT!
Railroad management has been nothing but hostile to it's employees way longer than people know. Don't let the 'woe is me' mentality put forth by any railroad fool you. They make record profits, pay the corporate management hefty bonuses and then when it comes to give the employees a raise, they nickel and dime every bit of that raise. Strike and shut them down!!!
with the exponential increases in health care and no end in sight from multiple contributing factors there will always be strikes as the cost of benefits increases far beyond the base pay. as companies always focus on becoming lean and cutting the fat any interupptions echo and reverberate to other sectors till the economy is no longer feasible. unless a company can do it all in making something they will get hit with some kind of shock yet it's the opposite direction companies are going mostly
Guess What . Consumers are the ones that are supposed to pay the price ,if they don't realize that the "Simi Public" industry is on the stock market and the people running it look out for the investors and not the workers. Even though the rail roads could not operate with out government money. But they operate for investors instead of "Simi government employees". The rule is "share holders get more, workers get less" . SHUT IT THE FUK DOWN !.Bring the pain. Tell "Google" or "Alexa" to play "City of New Orleans" by Arlo Guthrie .even back then ,when passenger Rail was dying ,I understood . What Arlo was talking about when he referred to " the sons of Pullman porters ,and The Sons of Engineers", one was exclusively ,black. The other was exclusively white. But both were unionized and well paid. My dad was a Pullman porter union rep out of the Jim crow south. That was after he served in the Pacific during WW 2 . So I think folks that work hard ,should be paid well, even if if is to the detriment of scumbags who think "watching the market" is a job. This is unrelated to the current topic in the video, but ffs the least a company at the caliber of this, could at least spellcheck the title. How pathetic.
This is a blessing in disguise. I have heard so many people saying they are eating like war times and depression of the past, this is a very disgusting and bad times for people and caused by the current administration. There is no reason people should have to decide between eating, fuel, roof over head, and cooling or heating. Alot of people saying can't or won't waste fuel, gas, or electric to cook, a Turkey and big meal is definitely to costly to use their oven or etc. Smh
There's an abundance of jobs available at the moment. At least where i live. With really good starting pay and sign on bonuses. I can think of at least 10 factories in a 20 mile radius of me that start off at $21 an hr. And as much OT as you want. I've worked 13 years at my plant, it took me that long to earn 22 dollars an hr. These 18 year olds come in and make almost the same base rate an hr. As me. Then they work the 120 days to get the $2000 bonus, and then leave. And most of them cant use simple hand tools.
@@exoticnoise420 the ones saying it's like war times and past depression are the elderly or people that have left the work place long ago. But there are far too many people that are at the end of their rope trying to survive with the economy and costs. Giving free turkeys or food that has to be cooked when they can't even afford the electricity to cook is also cruel in a sense.
