Sainz was the culprit, Ferraris mistake was they didn't know what to do when that asshole ignored orders, and second mistake is double stacking... they royally screwed Leclerc. and yes both RedBull and Ferrari fumbled with Max and Leclerc as they wanted to make it as safe as possible for them, Then RedBull pulled the trigger with Perez, Ferrari then wanted to counter with Sainz...but he ignored the call and from that point on it was a shitshow.

@@BuuGz86 strange take. Sainz made the right call and that's why he finished 2nd rather than 4th/5th. By the time he was called in Perez had made enough time to jump him the way he did Lecerlc!! Keeping the wets till taking drys meant keeping track position so even if Checo made the time up, all 4 drivers still had 1 stop to make. The only reason Sainz didn't win was dealing with a backmarker on his dry outlap.

At the very least it wouldve been extremely close between Checo and Sainz, probably Sainz still coming behind Checo, but close behind and with the advantage on the warmer tires. But thats racing too. Sometimes u personally do everything right, yet through the actions of others end up going from 1st to 4th like Leclerc. Sometimes u and ur team do everything right, yet still need a little luck to get the win, like Checo. And sometimes a chance for a win turns into a frustrating almost thanks to a lapped driver ignoring blue flags for ½ a lap, like Sainz. While I do feel for Sainz, he really deserved his first win and needs it too after the awful season so far, overall I think, the race ended with the right winner, and I also really loved seeing Checo win, especially after the team order last week, and hes been clearly faster than Max all weekend and did a perfect race. I don't agree with everything Martin Brundle says, but the one thing that almost never fails is 'always be on the right tyre at the right time'. I think a Red Flag 'lite' could be added to the options. Under a Diet Red, cars line up in race order at the pit lane exit, no restart warning. Lights can go grees as soon as is safe. Teams can work on cars if they wish, but may lose position if they do. If you miss your place in the line because you took tyres, you cannot cut back in line, you must join the back of the line when you leave your box. Green lights will also not wait for boxed cars, box at yor own risk. This would result in position changes during a race stoppage, but I think it's fair.

Drivers have to be perfect to get a good result, and this is interesting on itself. Also, the strategy is key and has to be perfect, and this comes not only from the engineers and strategists but also from the drivers, case in point: Sainz telling his engineer why he thought that going straight to slicks was the better choice.

You have information from you drivers that the track is drying out rapidly and a change in compound from Wet directly to hard is VIABLE. Taking Lap 22 as the optimal time to pit for dry tyres, Perez is NOT doing all the aforementioned in 4-ish Laps!! You had dry tyre data from ~ lap 20 from cars venturing out on dry tyres to inform yourselves on when the optimal time to make the switch to dry is. Part of Monaco's problem is that it lost a bit of it's uniqueness of being a street circuit. In early 2000s, Monaco was pretty much the only street track (yes, yes, Melbourne, but Melbourne at times doesn't feel like a street circuit). Then by the end of the 2000s we had tracks like Valencia, Korea and Baku, now we have Jeddah (as disliked as it is) and Miami and we'll have Vegas. I would say that the reason verstappen got away with the pit lane exit ordeal would be the "force majeure" aspect of the rule. Force Majeure means 'act of god' and rain could fall under that. it was a wet track and a wet pit exit and he oversteered and was correcting, so I would guess that the stewards utilised that part of the rule. same reason lando didn't get a penalty in russia last year when he was coming in to pit. He was on dry tyres on a wet track and crossed the line.

With Vertappen's lack of a penalty, I actually like that new rule a bit better. Sometimes drivers can't control if so much as a centimeter goes across the line, and it's so miniscule of a difference that it's silly to penalize someone for it. Durign Mick's crash, the VSC-to-Safety Car-to-Red Flag, many F1 fans will find that odd... not for Motorsports fans in general tho. Those who watch WEC knows that's fairly standard, especially so since Freitas is the race director. Back on WEC they frequently use FCY or Full Course Yellow (their equivalent of the VSC) for crashes before deploying the safety car or red flag. Don't doubt Freitas, he's no Massi, and he knows what he's doing. Managing 20 cars is a piece of cake to him, he manages 40+ cars with 3 additional safety cars during a Le Mans 24 hours.

Imho this analysys is perfect in every track beside Monaco. At Monaco track position is too important, lap times are nealry irrelevant. Perez is faster than anyone else? yes, true, but if Norris doesn't pit exactly when he arrives behind him he would have been stuck in fifth, same as other in front, Leclerc pit? he would have been behind Verstappen, closed the gap and then what he would have do? nothing, just waiting for Verstappen pit for slick , same as Sainz , he would have exit behind Norris AND Verstappen. and because you are IN FRONT you don't know what people do behind, RB was lucky with Norris and then they had the full advance on strategy , Ferrari pit = Stay out , Ferrari stay out = Pit . After the Verstappen Pit they protect at least that position, because they had nothing to lose at this point (Sainz was in front) so it was still 1-2 for Ferrari, but then they had blue flags, Perez was just 1 second in front of Sainz, So Ferrari's strategy was a mixbag of good (track position) and then very bad calls (double pit stop), but they were unlucky. RB strategy was in part worse than Ferrari, just watch Norris, he lost the track position to Russell because Russell did the Wet - Slick thing. So RB just gambled 3 Perez points (they are less important than Max's points) at Monaco's Casino, and 3 points against Norris witch isn't a contender, so who care (If Ferrari did lose a position to RB they would have lost like 2x the points) and they were lucky 3 times, Norris, blue flag and at restart too , 5 second slower with graining, but Monaco is Monaco. And it's unique for this too, it's chaotic.

Sorry, Peter Windsor was making the same mistake about Red Bull's strategy and tire calls. What happened in Monaco is unique to Monaco. Track position is supreme in Monaco and this is what Ferrari should've considered rather than "being on the right tire at the right time". If Sainz put the tires of a 1930s Soviet Union combine harvester on, he still would've won. Gasly pits for inters on lap 2 and overtakes Zhou on lap 12 in Mirabeau, in comparable machinery. Later in this lap he overtakes Danny Ric in the swimming pool. At this point it should be crystal clear that the inters are way way ahead of the wets. RB acted on it, Ferrari didn't. One could have assumed by Gasly's pace that the inters were quicker. By lap 7 he was lapping quicker than Perez, Max and Sainz only being slower than the race leader, who's in clean air. Classic Ferrari MasterBlan clowning once again. Prompted by Toto's comment about reconfiguring the track, I went to Google Maps to see what might be possible. It looks like the track could continue along the Avenue John F. Kennedy instead of turning into the Nouvelle Chicane after the tunnel. There's already a chicane of sorts just before Tabac where Route de la Piscine connects to JFK, and room for runoff. This extended straight would allow for a true, hard-stop overtaking opportunity (with the option of DRS if necessary) without onerous modifications to the circuit.

Re: red flag procedures and the VSC-SC-Red Flag thing after the schumacher crash, I feel like there's a pretty logical decision tree that could be created to cover 99% of situations. Is a barrier damaged? Consider red flag. Check if pit entry is blocked. If blocked, do not throw red flag! Etc. Multiple times this season, and a couple times in Monaco, the logical sequence of decisions just didn't seem to be followed. As for the rain messing with the systems, the way they dealt with it was pretty smart but those systems really should not get knocked out by some weather, F1 is a rain or shine sport.

I can’t stress enough that communicating a power cut that has disabled major services, when the command center has been affected by the power cut is one of the hardest things to do in Professional Communications. FIA race operations communications are probably controlled by email & tweet-deck with AWS cloud storage. Either from Race Control or the Geneva Operations Centre. If the local routers for Race Control had lost power, likely as the lost control of the start lights, they’ll have no network to access any of the comms contacts, templates or channels or to the Geneva Office. At that point they are part of the major incident and restoring comms is only item 3 on the list (after safety checks & main service restore). So unless they have a paper-based cellphone tree to hand, a 5G emergency dongles specifically prepared for this, or just spare staff who can be used as runners, all comms will be retrospective, no avoiding that. I’ve experienced this kind of issue twice in my professional life, once in a hurricane that was bringing down buildings nearby, so no one cared about service disruption comms & once under a supercell thunderstorm that surgically killed the computer network & local cellphone tower simultaneously (thanks gods). I know things weren’t as extreme in the pirate kingdom on Sunday, but the FIA runs a mobile operations center that relies on their host’s infrastructure, so the fact it happens so rarely itself is admirable. This is a perfect case study to put to Monaco for the FIA to have more control of the facilities for the F1 weekend. A heavy shower should not kill the electrics of a C21st global business. But Monaco has always looked C19th with upgrades.

I really think we should not be predictive about starting a race or not. Even if a torrential rain is about to hit the track, if it's 15;00 and track conditions are ok then you start! Doesn't matter if it's likely to be a red flag a few laps later. We don't want our (already bit incompetent) stewards to also take the role of being predictive meteorologists. I mean we'll never know for sure and Monaco was a fun race this year, but imagine if the race started at 15;00 and excitement we could have had (which team predicted the weather correctly a.k.a. inters vs wets. rapidly changing track conditions. risk/excitement. who pits v.s. who 'awaits' red flag. etcetera).

F1 has moved to improve racing with the new car. Don't stop there, make every race count. Remove tracks that aren't suited for these cars. We should never look at the schedule and see a race we might be willing to skip because it's sub-standard, track-position-is-everything racing.

He has always been fantastic in F1, just been in subpar cars up until Force India/Racing Point and now RB. If there is one driver who deserved that RB seat, it was Perez. And he is a superb teammate to Max. He accepts he is number 2 driver, he accepts that in situations, the team are going to favour Max and potentially cause him to give up positions (as has done) or to battle in order to get Max to catch up. Regardless, this deserves serious recognition, same goes for Bottas/Ham.

I think we should also explain that in these conditions on this track, the drivers behind have the advantage of choice, pit early for inters? ok the inters are 3/4s faster but now you're behind RB and they're not stopping until drys, good luck overtaking them, pit reacting to RB? good luck staying ahead as Perez eats your margin with his 3/4s faster outlap on inters, it is also to be noted that Sainz lost track position on Perez because he got impeded by Latifi for basically his entire lap Maybe the best solution was to pit Lec right away to cover for perez and let Sainz go straight to drys and then you can have them switch positions to give the lead back to lec once you swapped for drys, or, like Ferrari's original plan was, pit Sainz right away after perez for inters and hope he can come out ahead buying time for lec to swap directly for drys, but insight is 20/20

Any tyre must not cross a line. The fact that they accepted RB's argument is... Because it's Max Verstappen. If I state that no person must cross a certain line and then some dude lays 99% across the line and leaves a toe on the correct side of the line, that guy has fucking crossed the line. It's beyond dumb to suggest it's the full tyre. What happens if 90% of the tyre is to the left of the line and another car (racing, not coming out of the pit lane) arrives. Can that car also go with 90% of the tyre on the right side of the line, invading the pit box lane? Is his crossing of the line to the right conceptually different? That line has a purpose, and it's to avoid collisions when there's a difference in speed, low visibility and, in general, there's a safety concern. Interpreting this rule like that basically renders the line useless. The inability to make clear rules in F1 and warrantee they are enforced is preposterous. No other sport has all this BS. The clearest way to define this rule and enforce it is: any part of the car touches the line, you are penalized. Done.

Regarding the VSC after Schumacher's crash, race control said after the race they called an initial VSC just while the leader got to the start/finish straight, then the full SC could pick up the leader straight away rather than having some backmarkers between them. That way, if it DID remain a SC and not a red flag, there would be no need for anyone to overtake the SC and things could be got going again quicker and safer.
