Brother I know they put the tear tabs at the top of the MRE package but the way we open them in the military is along the long edge. It is much easier to get your spoon in there and creates less of a mess that way. Plus you have more package to hang onto. Try it once and you’ll never go back. When you are done with the MRE take all the trash and put it all back in the original main bag that way you will not need a separate trash bag. Two pro tips for you.
@kurtrussell5228
@kurtrussell5228 Месяц назад
take your knife and open it long way..... it was second nature, like breathing....haha! I guess a civilian would see the tear tabs and just assume.....but you're right, nobody uses those in the army.

I had some type of strokes, sesures or black outs when I was younger as well. Never found out what they were from. No long term damage with me either. There was a theory about formaldehyde. My dad had something that contained it in the room next to mine. Pretty sure once we got rid of it my black outs stopped. There was no confirmation about it being rhe cause though. Great video but ewww... 60fps.

Back in mid August of 1969 me and two other friends did a bicycling/camping trip from New Jersey to Bethel, NY for a small concert(which we didn't have tickets for) All of our camping gear was military surplus. We each had a poncho, pup tent half, and WWII era sleeping bags. For food, we each had 3 of the huge cans of Dinty Moore beef stew.

Just shy of 70. Injured my back somehow about 10 years ago and it's never been the same. It's the little muscles attached to the spine and surrounding area they told me. I went to a physical therapy specialist that had me doing back bends. A bit painful and counterintuitive to the direction you want to go but it seemed to help. They said it'd strengthen those muscles. Then I got lazy and wanted to avoid the painful exercise and stopped doing it. Hurts to bend over and pick up things. A back-bend? Hurts right now as I post this sitting. Hope you get it resolved. Cheers.

Strip all MREs, eliminate outer and inner meal bags and redundant packages. Spread weight of keeper packs to different pack pockets. Carry only one multi-purpose stove. You did good with the sleep/shelter. When in doubt, get it out. Did you need 3L water for one night? Do you need all the separate organizer bags…you have backpack pockets? I know you have a lighter sleep mat and a lighter backpack. Thing is, over the years, I have grown fond of you and family. I am your friend. Please protect the only spine you’ll get. It has to last. Thanks for sharing this adventure, with such good videography too…from east Tennessee.

I am a retired soldier for life. I thought you might enjoy a bit of my military story. I always liked my MREs. I don't think I ever had one that was "nasty" to me. I was always proud of the fact that I could swing my duffle bag up to my shoulder and carry it. (That may be what is causing the sciatica I experience now :( My favorite story is about the time I met up with a mama bear who was facing me less than 10 feet away. I felt no fear; I just turned around and walked away. That night I moved my army tent close to our headquarters area. Nothing like acting like a scaredy cat woman. Ha!!!

There shouldn't have been any guessing. The packet has what's inside it literally printed on the packet and the box it came in. You can't screw up chili. Believe me, the military has tried. Even the T-Pack chili is good. I actually had a soldier eat 6 MRE's in less that three hours (3500 calories each), then asked "what's for lunch" Great video. Thanks
@dutchbachelor
@dutchbachelor Месяц назад
And why doesn't that surprise me (the 6 MREs in three hours)? When I was in the military (Austria) we didn't have your fancy MREs. We got either warm rations (when the field kitchen was out) or cold ones. The cold ones were actually better. Warm was almost always some sort of stew with fatty and gnarly meat and half cooked potatoes with some spices that would clear you out like a yard sale. I even preferred the NRG5 style emergency rations to the cooked stuff. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Once a week there was "Grenadiers march" on the menu where they threw in all the leftovers of the week they thought to be still edible. Yeah, if you were wise, you'd rather go hungry. I don't think they even tried to produce something palatable. But sometimes we were lucky and there were things on the menu you just can't screw up, like beans and sausages or macaroni with tomato sauce and meatballs (we weren't so sure where the meat came from, but what the heck...). So we always looked forward to cold rations. That was usually some bread rolls, a can of meat or cheese spread (commercial) and / or air dried sausages, jam or honey and some chocolate or müsli bars. We ALWAYS had some dudes who after finishing their ration for the whole day in one sitting and then went around the company looking if they could scrounge some more.
@greggmouritzen7478
@greggmouritzen7478 Месяц назад
@@dutchbachelor personally, I was lucky to finish off one in a day. Sir, you are giving an adequate description of what we call T-packs. It consisted of trays with 18 servings (I think). There was 5 variants of eggs (probably made from rotten ones), a couple of beef meals, I heard about chicken, but never saw it, and of course the American standby chili. There were no sides like rice, beans, noodles (I think). So inedible, I don't think my dog would touch it. Any condiments disappeared quickly, as you had to mask the flavor somehow. Many would forgo a TPack in favor of MRE leftovers. For the U.S. I guess it really depends on which branch you're in, as some get treated better than others.

Lota years ago. Seriously injured my back. Abject agony that first day. Strangely, it was the back pack that did most of the healing. Old aluminum frame back pack 25 to 35 pounds in it. For a nearly 3 month long summer adventure. The frame shaped my back, proper posture, straps positioned shoulders,, and exercise. The back pack cured it.

Haven't seen a good overnight with you in a. good month or so. An adventure that is not overnight with Luke for me is very disappointing. So happy! We are in for an adventure......Oh yeah! 😊

In 1969 I went through survival school in Little Creek VA before shipping out to Nam with the Brown Water Navy. The C-ration they gave me after being liberated from the POW camp was Spiced Beef. I've never been as sick off of a military ration as that one. Still have that P38 can opener. MRE's much improved.

Generally speaking Lukes videos intrigue me but the military gear tests really are enjoyable. Keep up the good work. The Outdoor Gear Review rocks. 🤩

Just Like with Tony, I appreciate it when you take the time to talk about movies and shows you've watch recently. Good to hear opinions from the general-audience type person. Sometimes listening to fellow movie-fans can be overwhelming.

I think this is the first time I've commented on your channel, so here goes. I really liked that, just sitting chilling round the fire or was almost like being there, although given the after effects of that meal I'm quite glad there's an ocean between us. And it was good to see the gear in action, you've answered my question about whether the Catoma would be right for me, it's a "No" by the way, it's too small for this wriggling sleeper. Here's hoping the walk down the hill didn't set off day two of the Battle of the Bulging Stomach, and looking forward to the next one.

I like that you omitted all the huffing/puffing as you head up the trail. I'm surprised you still have any kidneys with all the coffee you drink. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada.

The concept of the military carrying everything in a pack for hundreds of miles is a romantic holdover from pre-20th century. You may go on a few humps (yomps, ruck march), just for conditioning purposes, or your operators/elites may need to carry all of that crap for long endurance missions, but conventional ground forces will have a bivouac location. You're not going far with 80 or 100lbs on your back on top of your gear and weapon. You'll drop it and set up, then head out with a patrol pack with basics for your mission duration. Or you're taking some kind of helo, Osprey or vehicle to a FOB or wherever you're operating from, and that'll carry the bulk of your gear. Anyone doing a 5-20 mile hike with a pack full of old surplus gear is insane. There's photographic and video evidence from the Boer Wars, all the way to now. You don't see grunts carrying massive packs while patrolling or assaulting a position.

Twisters was actually pretty good. I grew up with the first as well. This new one actually might be better than the first.
