In Central Gujarat, the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is an ideal spot for observing quails during the monsoon season. Lucky birders can spot all four species: Rain Quail, Small Buttonquail, Rock Bush Quail, and Barred Buttonquail in a single visit. During this season, quails are particularly brave, vocal, and in colorful breeding plumages. The lush green backgrounds and cloudy skies create perfect conditions for capturing stunning videos.
We visited Nal Sarovar specifically to find the elusive Small Buttonquail, but luck wasn't on our side. However, our evening was made by the sight of this handsome male Rain Quail in his splendid breeding plumage. We are surrounded by several quails, communicating with each other through their loud calls. It is a distinctive, musical, metallic-sounding double-noted phrase, repeated 3-6 times over 6-8 seconds, “whit-whit, whit-whit, whit-whit...”, each strophe starting quietly and building in volume. The calls of the Rain Quail felt like echoes of the wild or you can say it is a "Monsoon Rocktar". Truly amazing.💕 Enjoy the video✨
