Mosseri has told how he wrote Rain Song in English and then had Stefanie Hong translate the lyrics to Korean. He relates that in doing so, Hong “changed the lyrics dramatically and wrote almost an entirely new poem based on the phrasing and themes of my English lyrics. So really she’s the lyricist.” Rain Song (English translation from Stephanie Hong’s Korean translation) The steadfast nights And the whispers of hearts Come together On the small footsteps Drop by drop The rain falls again With lifted head I bid farewell To the departing season After a long wait In warmth I sing a song As winter leaves The child greets spring’s arrival Breathing together with the world And welcoming together The embrace of the new nights
@@Ambar42 No I meant that it was cool to see that they let the song exist in its original language and felt that people would still appreciate it even if they didn't understand the words. I feel people with different cultures and languages always feel pressured to explain themselves for the understanding of Western society, such as changing your name to a more western sounding name, but to see that this pressure is being lifted a bit and that people are becoming more open to learning about different cultures is very touching
@@afilmbyemilypark Definitely. But in my opinion the access to the lyrics of a song and their meaning would only support that understanding of Korean culture. On the other hand music of course is said to be a language that doesn't need translation. It works without the words to me, still knowing what is sung here would add another layer.
@@Ambar42 Yep totally agree it adds a whole new layer of meaning! Either way its really good to see new voices in world media and I hope it will only keep expanding!
A24 really has a formula down for telling visceral stories. They are so consistent in scouting out amazing talent from artists that are not too well known.
I love them, but A24 is mainly a distributor. They produce very few films. Usually, the film is created, someone from A24 sees it and decides to distribute it and get a part of its profit. Again, much respect to them, just making sure that people don't believe they should have the merit of "telling visceral stories". That goes to Lee Isaac Chung who directed and wrote it based on his own experience, as well as the actors who did a phenomenal job and all the other contributors (especially Mosseri). Then, if you want to give credit to those who made this story possible, that goes to Christian Oh and Plan B (Brad Pitt) who first invested in the project, A24 came later. What they do so great is having great taste, and making these beautiful films much more accessible. Anyways, just wanted to point that out!
@@nicolaspoblete640 Well spoken Nicholas! The crew deserves so much recognition! I guess what I'm trying to say is A24 picks really meaningful movies to distribute.
The steadfast night The whispers of hearts All coming together Over small footsteps Once again, one drop at a time The rain falls Lift mine and your gaze As it departs To bid farewell to the season After a long wait In this warmth You and I sing As Winter departs The child greets Spring's embark And shares a breath with the world To receive together The embrace of a new night,
What a beautiful and soothing singing by Yeri Han, a truly multi-gifted artist! Also, thanks to Emile Mosseri for his beautiful, dreamy & awesome composition for the excellent & perfectly effective for Minari! He deserve the Oscar Award, definitely! Bravi Tutti!!
When this song started playing by the end of the movie... i know it’s Han Yeri’s voice. With her soft voice, the whole feeling about the movie transcends in her voice... been following Han Yeri since “Age of Youth”, and I love how she chose her serial/movies. Yoon Sunbae in AoY, Song Ja In in “Nokdu Flower”, Eun Hee in “My Unfamiliar Family”, and off course her role in Minari as Monica Yi. She’s so subtle yet strong & resilience...
As a Korean Canadian, this movie was incredible. The depictions were on point. We moved to Canada when I was only 9 years old and came for a better livelihood for not only myself but my parents. What was presented in this movie had nothing short of what I experienced and what my parents went through. This movie reawakened and revisited those memories I had kept deeply inside my mind. It confronted all those hardships and it allowed me to cry 10+ years of burden. I am eternally grateful for this movie but also for my mom and dad. It gave me a fragment of their perspective that I lacked when I was younger. Great job A24
And, how beautiful is Yeri Han's delivery of the song? At the screening I attended, I saw several people getting ready to leave after the last shot, only to fall back on their seats when they heard the first few chords of this song. And they stayed until the last note.
This is honestly one of the best scores I’ve ever heard in a film in my life. Everyone goes on about Hans Zimmer as far as giant blockbuster films go but I prefer the more humanistic low key scores like this and anything from Max Richter.
