Appreciate the tutorials . Question . Hows the durability on this method of ano . And can you cover it with finish ( lacquer,epoxy , urethane etc ) without losing color ?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
It's very durable, and the higher the voltage used, the higher the durability. You can coat it, but results vary. You aren't actually coloring the titanium, you're just building an oxide layer that reflects light differently at different thicknesses. When you add a clear coat it changes the look a bit(usually makes it show up darker)

I appreciate your videos! I've been playing with anodizing the past few days with a similar kit, and it's been awesome to use. I was wondering if you knew of a way to give the final product a polished look.
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
If you put a polished finish on the titanium before you anodize, then it will have that same finish afterwards. The issue is if you etch it first you will dull the polish, but you can get away without etching, it just won't be as bright. The other issue is that a polished finish doesn't hold up quite as well as a brushed, or media blasted finish. It does look really good though. Give it a shot and see if you like it. Worst case, you can always strip it and re-anodize.
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
Another thing you might want to keep in mind is that the higher the voltage, the thicker the oxide layer, which is what refracts light at the different wavelengths and gives us what we see as the different colors. If you do a polished finish, go with a higher voltage (thicker oxide layer) to compensate a bit with wear resistance. Hope I made sense there, lol
@probabykarma
@probabykarma 5 лет назад
@@ApollosRings that helps alot. The product I'm wanted to anodize costs around $700 and has tight tolerances, so I almost don't want to risk having to etch it and anodize a few times. @ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
Hey Marko, glad to hear you like the ring! I think there may be just a little bit of confusion, the "antique silver" is a resin pigment color. There is no actual silver in the ring. That being said, I have close to 100 different colors available for pigments. I believe I have 4 or 5 different gold pigment options. Antique gold is an option, along with a few others. I can completely customize a ring any way you like it. If that sounds good and you would like to further discuss having a custom ring made just let me know, I would love to create the ring for you!

🤔 How different is anodizing Ti with heat vs electricity? I can see a much bigger selection with electricity however, i guess asking for durability which one is better for worn items, jewelry / knives etc. 🤔 Do you have any videos of making the rings or just forming the blanks? Awesome looking pieces!
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
So as far as the differences go, the biggest thing is you can get very exact, even colors with the electricity. The other big advantage is that you don't run the risk of warping any items with electricity. Sometimes you can screw up the lock bar with heat, so that was the main reason I never did much heat ano. As far as durability is concerned, the different colors are really just different thicknesses of oxidation. The light is reflected at the different wavelengths through the different thicknesses giving the perception of colors, so the higher voltage colors tend to hold up a bit better just because the oxide layer is a bit thicker. I would recommend electro anodizing every time over heat just because of the control. The other factor that effects durability is the surface prep of the titanium. Highly polished surfaces will not hold up as well as a blasted finish because the blasted finish has more of a porous surface for the oxide to adhere to. I only have one ring video up currently, and it is a really old one, but I have quite a few new ones filmed that are much better. I just need to find some time to get them edited, then I'll be adding them to the channel. Keep an eye out, there will be quite a few new ones coming soon. I just got a bunch of new video gear, and I'm about to finally add a power supply to the shop for anodizing as well. I have quite a few videos I'll be filming for all that in the very near future. Stay tuned! 👍🏻

its much easier and effective to just start at the highest voltage and only dip the tip in until its completely color changed, then remove a battery and dip the spoon a little deeper until that color is different, then take another battery off, dip it a little further, so on until you get to the end doing it that way will give much more vibrant colors and can be blended by lightly dipping a tiny edge past the color each time you remove a battery

I'm creating jewels using silver metal clay, which is basically silver in a clay form which you fire at 900°C and then it gives you 100% solid silver. Would this anodizing process work on it, as well as sterling silver? Would it actually work on any kind of metal?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
Hey, thanks for watching! Unfortunately this exact process does not work on every type of metal. You aren't completely out of luck though. There is an anodizing process for silver, but it is done with sodium poly sulfides, more commonly referred to as toning. I believe NurdRage has a video about it on his channel if you care to check it out.

Good job man, have you heard of a product called multi-etch? It etches the material ina different way as not to change the finish of the titanium. It’s not an acid it doesn’t change the finish to that matte finish or media blasted look. After doing a few hundred fidget spinner anodizing trials I learned that the absolute best finish to achieve the richest or most vibrant colors is to use a satin finish (very close to machine finish). Whinks rust remover actually takes the titanium’s finish back a little bit, (even in small short intervals). Unless the eating utensils were going on display and never used otherwise the anodizing will wear off over time. No matter what chemicals you use the anodizing will wear off and they will need to be redone. So again it will go into the Whinks removing more of the satin finish. Multi-etch works differently, even if you leave it in for minutes at 120-150 degrees Fahrenheit it retains the finish. I order it from a place in Arizona. Here’s a link to a video on their website showing the edge retention. Keep up the good work, the world needs art and artists. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NY-jzy1yBlk.html

The baking soda is simply to make an electrolyte solution. I haven't attempted it with sulfuric acid, so I couldn't tell you for sure. Any electrolyte solution should work though. It's a different process for aluminum though, and I don't believe that baking soda would do the trick there.

By no means do I suggest starting a anodizing business using Whink as an etchant, but I'm sure you see where I'm going with this.

What’s the point of dipping in the whink in the beginning? Why etch it?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
Etching in the Whink makes for a much more pronounced ano color. You can anodize without etching first, but the colors will be considerably more dull than if you etch first. There are other merchant options out there as well, but the Whink is a fairly cheap alternative. Some of the others can be pretty pricey. Multi-Etch is a popular etchant, and probably a little safer, as it's not an acid base, but it is way more expensive.

What if I just want a purple to blue gradient?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 4 года назад
You'll start getting purple around 18 volts, and then it'll go to blue till around 35 volts. If you just use those voltages for a general idea of where you need to be you can make the purple-blue gradient. You may need to adjust the voltage a little bit, but those numbers should get you in the ballpark.

Have you gone any higher than 100.5 V? Or is that where the colors pretty much stop?
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
The colors start to repeat after 11 or 12 I believe. I have a color chart video if you're interested. If you have a power supply you can somewhat fine tune colors in between 9 volt increments, but those are the colors for the most part

Awsome vid man!! I'm fixin to get married and dont want a traditional gold ring, partly because I dont like gold and partly because I'm a welder and it's not that safe. I was looking at those silicone rings but this would be better!! Thanx for the opportunity at a chance to win!! Blue/black/silver , something like that would be cool. Bud I spoke to you a little bit yesterday, and have one more Question if you don't mind, so 9v can get expensive, so I thought I'll just buy a DC power supply off Amazon, most of them are rated 30 volts 5 amps, so am I right to think that I'm only going to get about 3 9volts worth of power out of that power supply? Or do the amps change things? Thanx again for your help, and an awesome giveaway!!
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
Hey, thanks! I'm in the same boat with the ring. We are getting married next year, and I didn't want a traditional ring either. I wanted something with a little style and personality. Gold and silver are just too bland for my taste. I love the carbon fiber, and then when I coupled it with the resin to give it a bit of color I knew that had to be my wedding ring. They are really comfortable and lightweight to boot. I dig your color choices too, those are the colors I have on my personal band. As far as the power supply goes, you are spot on. You'll want to get one that can do around 100-120 volts. They are a little more, but that'll allow you to go through the whole spectrum of colors. With the 30 volt unit you'll only get the first 2 or 3 colors in the spectrum. Hope that helps. If you need any more info, feel free to ask. I'll help any way I can. Good luck in the giveaway, and thanks for watching!

@@ApollosRings well hell...decisions decisions, I think I will still go with the power supply. Will maybe save money in the long run. Thanx man, and Congratulations on the marriage thing! Yeah me and the wife to be aren't really into traditional rings and some how I missed the ones you make, probably because I dont have Instagram. We are going to check them out on etsy for sure! And thanx again for your help and time, most RU-vid 'rs will never answer if I have a Question, you've been most helpful.

Thanks! We are doing a cruise wedding, so we're both really looking forward to it! If you plan on doing quite a bit of anodizing, you can't go wrong with a power supply. It comes in pretty handy for other things as well. Definitely worth the investment. Honestly, I've been meaning to get one for a while now, but every time I have a little extra cash set aside I end up finding something else I need just a little more, lol. I've been on the same set of 9volts for over a year now. Probably time to bite the bullet, hahaha! Far as the rings go, I do quite a bit of custom stuff too. If you don't see something you like on Etsy, but have something different in mind just let me know. I'm always up for doing a custom design!

@Shanes_Sharp_Sheet 5 лет назад
@@ApollosRings yeah man I just looked and after you get above 30v the price goes way up!! Looking at around $175.00 at least! From what I'm seeing. That's nice knife money! lol! So I'm not sure what I'm gonna do.. if I bought say 10 9v batteries, do they last awhile or do they die quickly? I have no idea what to expect from the batteries. I don't wanna spend $100 on batteries every time I wanna anodize. I just seen that my fiance got on here and is trying to win me my wedding band too! lol! We talked about a cruise.... I could get on a boat, but she can't... she can get on a plane, but I can't...lol, so chances are whatever we do, we will be driving
@ApollosRings
@ApollosRings 5 лет назад
Yeah, they can get pretty expensive for the size machine you need to do all the colors. The 9volts are really not too bad of an investment. You can get dollar store 9volts that will do the job just fine. $10 for 10 batteries, or something like that. As long as you do everything correctly and make sure not to let the leads accidentally touch (I know this from personal experience), the 9volts will last you a ton of ano jobs. I think I mentioned it already, but the handful of batteries I'm using now are the same batteries I've been using for over a year, and maybe even over 2 years. I honestly don't remember the last time I bought fresh batteries. I do recommend a multi-meter though if you don't have one and plan on using batteries. You can get one for like $10 if you shop around. You wanna make sure all your batteries are good before you start, or you'll be having major anodizing issues. It took me a little bit to figure out the issue the first time I had a totally dead battery. That's awesome your fiance is helping out in the giveaway! That's a cool woman you got there, lol! I've never been on a cruise, but my fiance has. I'm just hoping I don't get seasickness, lol. Is that why your girl can't do a cruise? That'd make for a rough wedding week.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) ain't gonna help you much for HF burns. You need calcium carbonate (preferably gel). The problem with HF isn't the acidity, it's that it leaches out the calcium from the tissue. You need to give it a source of calcium to eat away at AND neutralize it. In fact, if the reaction is exotermic, and i'm guessing the reaction with baking soda is, you might end up releasing HF gas, which is even worse, as it will get in your lungs and cause permanent damage.
