As a drummer, I know how hard this is to play. Cozy is dead on time, not a glitch of off time. When he breaks into the double bass it is again dead on. And then it stops. There is a lot more than people realize that goes into this work of art. It is one thing to play a beat. This is at a much more evolved level, like telling a story , musically with a percussive set of tools. So damn tight yet he plays it loose,if that makes sense to my fellow drummers. Z
One of the best drummers I’ve ever seen, I once went to see Aerosmith at the Fountain Casino in NY & Joey Cramer was sick & Cozy filled in, what a great show, with Rainbow he was spectacular!
Am I wierd to be able to sing and imagine the guitar more or less the whole song? This album, the two before is just as big part of my childhood as my fathers boiled mackerel for dinner. And that in a strongly pentecostal family...
I think Cozy started that particular rhythm, with the live version from '76 reaching a big audience in '77. Rainbow reused it for Spotlight Kid in '81; Gillan with Secret of the Dance and Unchain Your Brain; Whitesnake with the live Take Me With You; and Gary Moore for Blinder. Practically every thrash band used it after Motorhead had a big hit with Ace of Spades. Talk about influential!
Cozy Powell Clive burr les binks Andy parker Ian paice Brian Downey were my favorites then Milky Dee Scott Rockenfeild Mark zonder Kim Ruzz. All solid drummers
On kids Saturday TV with such programs as TisWaz, we could see awesome musicians like Cozy, Gary Moore, Phil Collins, Sting, etc, doing their stuff. It was amazing. Nostalgia may Sting sometimes but at least my generation have this.
Great drummer Cozy.... Please listen to YOYOKA SOMA cover Cozy in this song, you can hardly believe her skills. She is beyond belief and by far the most talented drummer I have heard.
I have heard that cover many times, it is wonderful, the technique and the brutality that she demonstrates while playing She certainly has a great future.
The most talented you've ever heard, nobody can belive that horse poop. She Is great for a young person, but nothing in the real world of drumming, dime a dozen. Learn to play then post.n
@@morbidmanmusic if you kid or teenagers then you talented. If your mom tells you talented and you 40 it's not the same. Just stuck it she's a girl and not American.
Can you please make that isolated drums for the songs "Stargazer" and "Gates of Babylon". Maybe I can improve my music sheet transcriptions and find easier some possible mistakes, which I might have done. Thanks a lot.
Cozy Powell was auditioned by Ritchie Blackmore november 1975 and had the task to play 15 minutes alone non-stop with perfect timing and he did it and got the job. Some twelve professional american drummers right before weren't able to do that. This was the first step on the way to Stargazer and Catch The Rainbow/Live.
Tony Carey recalled that it was Ritchie's typical way of auditioning drummers by playing fast shuffle for half an hour until they couldn't keep up with him. It wasn't any problem for Cozy and he got the job after 20 minutes, according to Colin Hart.
@@laurenzgraffilpenstein8117 That's true, but Cozy Powell was unique, like Ian Paice, Bobby Rondinelli, Simon Phillips, Dennis Carmassi and others at the top. And Cozy was along with Rondinelli the hardest hitter. Paice is brillant in technical delay - world-class.
My opinion that song has the best ending absolute the best ending of any song I have ever heard in my life rainbow is not my favorite group but kill the king is my top three best songs I've ever heard in my life that ending kicks ass
@@Osvaldo__ I really appreciate John Bonham for his contribution to Led Zeppelin music, but for me he didn't sound outstanding, he played technically well but not outstandingly.
Excellent Job !! Is it possible to make a version with only instruments? I want to listen to drum takes by Rainbow, The Michael Schenker Group, Black Sabbath,Whitesnake, and Cozy Powell's Solo Albnum !
Cozy's playing and sense of rhythm was like atomic clock, absolutely solid. The tempo never slows down or speeds up. How many drummers can you say that about, especially when everyone is now on a fuckin grid.
Have listened and practiced to this song beyond count, but just noticed for the first time the slight phaser on the drums. Brilliant! Thanks for sharing the isolated drum tracks.
@@mattiasorre1718 There’s a rough mix version of the entire Long Live R & R album on RU-vid worth checking out. It’s all low end. Then Martin Birch did his thing on the remix, and the difference is astounding - razor sharp, punchy, right in your face.
I pretty sure the phasing effect is just an audio artefact from the way the drums were extracted from the finished song - extraction software is good but it's not perfect.
@@KiwiExpressCream That as my first thought. So I listened to the full track. It’s very subtle, but apparent, particularly on the cymbals. Sounds like Martin Birch used two tape machines just slightly out of sync. Take a listen to the full track and tell me what you think.
@@scottstedeford7575 I had a good listen to my original copy and if there is any phasing, it is very subtle indeed. I don't imagine it was intentional but perhaps a natural phasing caused by two or more overhead mics being very slightly out of phase - after all, with the number of crash cymbals Cozy used, they're all going to be different distances away from each overhead mic and will be naturally out of phase. A bit like using two mics on a guitar cab, they have to be the same distance from the cone or you'll get phasing issues, so much the same I would think. Still, maybe you're right, I'd be interested to know.
People need to take a closer look at cozies custom made sticks , I use 2b and 5b , I've had the privilege of holding a pair used by cozy , they were what I can only describe as " cricket stumps" I'm not exaggerating in any way , the amount of cymbals he must have split must be in the 100s , I'd love to know if the sticks he used were available to buy when he started learning to play .
Osvaldo, my question may be stupid, but how on earth did you do that? I mean "isolate" the drum track? I know Kill the King by heart. I'm a hobby drummer myself and have studied the drum track a lot, so I know this is actually the original Kill the King drum track, played by Cozy and not a replay cover by anyone else. Did you use special software for this work? However you did it, I really appreciate your work. It's a dream come true for me to hear the isolated drum track of my absolute favorite song. Thank you so much!!!
Tremendo !!!!!
I couldn't believe it was the same drummer when the Rainbow albums came out after listening to the Beck albums for years. Not that he wasn't great in both contexts. I got to see him with Rainbow (with Ronnie Dio, who came out to sit in the audience right in front of me and my friends to watch whoever was headlining. Got to meet him.).
You can hear that Ludwig snare scream when he cranks onto those open rolls he hits a little harder you really hear the human element so much in this track. Naturally drumming today is far more Superior technical and just disgustingly good but people need to realize before that all had to happen it was this. The guy is solid but man playing covers back in the day was a lot f****** easier LOL
