Because he lives in a system of electronic sirens, and has been around them for quite some time. So it's easy to pick up on any malfunctions. And, to answer your question about the drivers hissing, it's pretty self explanatory. You can HEAR the drivers hissing.

If I recall correctly, I came accross a newspaper article about how children were afraid of the siren (it's next to a school I think, they were scared because of how it looked) and the head of the office or the county or something decided to ask the children what to do to make it look less scary and set out a drawing/redesigning contest, which made it end up like this. I quite like it actually, and from all of the sirens being able to give a spoken message I've seen on RU-vid so far this one is definitely the one with the best clarity in the voice. We have 3008's and in some more rural area's 2004's in The Netherlands, which produce a completely different sound, by the way.

MaxxFordham I talked to a guy from Whelen and he told me that they do have a paint service were they can actually pigment color the fiberglass of any one of their sirens. He told me that a college in some state somewhere has their logo painted on the campuses 4004's.
