I could be wrong but, I believe that the PS1, Dreamcast, and GBC versions are all single player only, and the N64 version is the only console version to feature Co-op mode.
I would imagine most of the complaints with controls are more to due with the controls without analog stick which at best passible and at worst horrendous, though the other console ports aren’t perfect either (especially the Dreamcast port since it keeps every function on pc which leads to a mess of button combos)
Yeah, I can see that. The thing that bothered me most was the iverson on the right sick, but I did get used to it pretty quick. Overall it isn't bad, and pretty serviceable.
The biggest problem with this port is that it takes out almost all of the tactical planning the earlier games were known for. Also, enemy framecount was super low, leading to stuttering death animations. The maps were completely redesigned and more linear. Also, if I remember correctly, it didnt feature all of the missions of the campaign, which is something all console ports had a problem with. If you look at the N64 port, for example, some missions are missing, but it includes almost the entire feature set of the PC version and even adds a 2 player co-op mission mode. If I remember correctly, the Dreamcast had the missing mission in the N64 version, but omitted another, and I think dropped the 2 player mode in favor of better graphics. Given all of this, the PS1 version is an awful substitute for the game it's based on. That's the reason for the negative reception. Otherwise, it's a pretty mediocre PS1 Action game with a tiny bit of added strategic depth.
I can agree that it is not the best representation of the Rainbow Six series as a whole. I think it is flawed in many ways, the graphics are frequently jank and it is pretty simple by comparison. I think that it is a fun game that really eases into the series in a way that might be too lax, but I do personally believe it has a place in the PS1 library. There are better experiences to be found in the series and I would definitely agree in this very game, on other consoles. My opinion on the game has changed a bit since I made this video, but upon revisiting I do still find it enjoyable. I respect your thoughts and I generally agree you are right, but I still think it is a great way for people start with the series. Especially for people who like retro games and wanted to try the games out which I acknowledge is a pretty narrow category.
Yeah in retrospect I should have communicated that there isn't really anyhting wrong with it on its own. The big issue was just not having an option to change it. It is just really weird how different people get a totally different feel about what is intuitive. That's why it's always good to have options. Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!
