Every year for the last 15 or so years we have taken a journey across the state of Nevada from Reno to an area we like to call “Eastern Nevada”. An area loaded with small fisheries and the highlight is the amazing Stillwater fishing that can be found all over. Big name lakes and Reservoirs like Wildhorse and Southfork in the Elko area to a bunch of smaller fisheries that hold some of the best trout fishing in the state.
We schedule this trip in May every year leading up to the Memorial Day weekend. It is the perfect time of year. The weather is usually warming, the bug life is amazing, and the fish are on the feed after a long hard winter. This sets us up for days of fishing with little time to rest. This year was no exception. Catching Rainbow Trout in the 2-5 pound class that are fat and happy and jump out of the water like missiles sometimes 4-5 times before reaching the net.
This year we hosted 3 separate outings of 2 ½ days in length. This is our normal schedule each season. Anglers come and join us from all over. This is a perfect trip for those who like to camp. We bring our 27 foot trailer and park it at one of the numerous campgrounds in the area. Some with full hook ups, some with showers and restrooms and a variety of dry camping opportunities. We meet at our campsite on the first day to rig up rods and go over the program. An evening session of fishing is also not out of the question. Lunch and dinners are included in the trip and for a lot of our customers this is the best part. Gourmet food cooked on a Traeger grill, and you don’t have to cook or clean up during the trip.
We had days of doubles, triples, and even more fish on the line at the same time. We had one lady catch two fish at the same time. We caught some Banana Trout, Bass, Rainbows and even a Brown Trout or two. The scenery in the area is amazing and the weather was perfect. This trip always meets expectations, and we cannot wait until next year.
We spend two full days chasing the area’s amazing trout and bass with lightweight fly rods from something to float in. Float Tubes, Prams, Pontoon Boats, kayaks, and even small boats are all effective floating devices for the trip. Our pre trip scouting efforts put our guests on fish right away on the first day. We spend a few days making sure we know exactly where to cast our lines, what to use and what time of day to do it. Our guests have it pretty good when you think about it. We point to the fish, give our guests the correct flies to use and fill their bellies with some amazing grub along the way.
For sure this trip is one of the best and most fun trips of the year. Our return rate is amazing, and all of our outings sell out in advance pretty early. As we like to say, “this is a catching trip, not a fishing trip”.
