This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, specifically on his discussion of sadness (Traurigkeit), what some of its sources and meanings are, and how we can approach sadness (as well as other emotions such as anxiety). In Rilke's view, sadness is a sign that something new is within us, something that can ultimately pertain to our fate.

I've been reading Rilke a lot recently. This was an absolute treat to see; I think that Rilke's letters are very impactful, especially for those of us making big changes in our lives. William H. Gass' "Reading Rilke: Reflections on the Problems of Translation," is a stellar book if you haven't picked up a copy.

i have not heard of sadness being posited as ... something new entering into oneself, instead if the common "loss" ... amazing ~ 💙

Yes, though we shouldn't imagine that all sadness is always precisely that

Started re-reading Duino Elegies today, so it was a nice surprise to see this video. Rilke is my favorite poet, only second to Baudelaire, and seeing you create such great videos on his work makes me really happy. As always, thank you for the hard work.
