A tour of my rainwater garden project where I use permaculture techniques to grow corn and squash in the desert with no supplemental irrigation. It's a project that I've been doing for a few years now and I think it's good example of what can be done with limited water and resources. I hope this might inspire others to see what they can do in there own environments.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for watching:)

Smart designed, capturing all that valuables waters for small garden. It surprised me that it rain that much in Arizona. Lots fun project to do with the family.

+homesteadonomics We are located south of Alamosa and have been here 2 years now. We love the openness the SLV provides with mountain ranges around us. Coming from the east coast & midwest, we have had to learn ways to deal with arid climate and water issues. We are implementing swales as well as the back to Eden gardening method. Hoping to plant a small woodland to create a micro climate and to control wind erosion. It is awesome that we can have rainwater collection, although they have limited the amount. I have never understood why the state had banned it since the water will return back to the ground anyways.

+homesteadonomics I lived in Bullhead City and Phoenix for several years. Now I am a full time RVer getting ready to start my homestead. My plan is to build an Earthship. My background is in construction. I was Mojave County Combination Building Inspector, Bulkhead City Plans Examiner, Arizona General Contractor and I have 2 degrees in construction. With all this experience, I see I have a lot to learn about planning the layout for my homestead.
@homesteadonomics

+Linda May Wow! I think you'll have no problem figuring out your build! Tons of experience! An Earthship sounds like an amazing project to work on... I've enjoyed a couple of documentaries on some of the NM communities/areas where they are a bit more common. Anyways, I think the planning and figuring process is sometimes the most exciting as everything is still a possibility:) Obviously some things will change as you develop your property but overall I'm sure you're going to have a great time! Would love to hear updates on your build and other homestead projects :) Joe

Just thinking, but if you were to lay plastic in a depression over a large area, fill it with sand and earth, and plant your raised garden beds over/on top of it, it would hold the rainwater in the soil and allow the garden plants greater access to the water. Like creating a water table a few feet down. It would be a large project, but possible with a Bobcat excavator. Awesome job by the way! Love the way you think outside the box!

That was some good flow! Great use of your surroundings and nature. I'm reminded of the first time I saw the lawns "watered" out in front of Old Main. Who doesn't lay a foot deep of water on a lawn?😀 Go Cats beat Nevada! Bear Down!!
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 9 лет назад
+Henry Pu Yi hahaha… that's that old time flood irrigation… berms and basins around all of those old buildings. I think it had to do with retaining water rights or something like that. There are neighborhoods in PHX that get their lawns flooded every two weeks because they are in a 'grandfathered' program that was created to maintain water rights for the area. They needed to 'prove water use' so these houses have to keep it up or loose the rights.. or something like that. I believe it's called the 'green belt' up in PHX. Kinda crazy but if I lived in one of those places I'd have the entire place covered with fruit trees and gardens… and have a mini little oasis!

@helidodge 9 лет назад
Joe, thats a great proof of concept model. I saw where you said you were going to expand it. Just my humble suggestion, but have you considered starting your rain collection with swales at the highest part(s) of your property? You could build your micro ponds at the overflow of the level sills of your swales. That way the water entering your micro ponds would have already settled out a large amt of the sediment. By starting higher in the landscape you can stack functions reduce erosion, rehydrate your entire property and use gravity for irrigation. By what i saw in the video it looks like you still have an excess water leaving your property. Additionally, you can expand down slope over time adding more swales, micro pods, etc as you go. What you have already done is an amazing example of what permaculture design can do . Keep up the great work. Jarrett
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 9 лет назад
+helidodge Those are great ideas! I plan to expand this system over the fall/winter to be able to retain the excess water leaving the system... makes me sick to see...lol! I also want to add more growing space and water retention too.... maybe even incorporating an IBC tote as the pond evaporates relatively quickly without being covered. I'll probably rework the growing areas, berms, and consider different options for water retention.... and yes, work on something for the down slope areas too. As for swales... that's another larger project that I plan on doing when I can get some money for a backhoe/excavator;) Thanks for all the great ideas Jarrett... stayed tuned, you might see some of those things in next years project:) Joe

Rainwater gardens + Rainwater swales + Rainwater Level Spreader - lawn care and plantings? Swales near side less of a angle and can be cut, farside challenge to cut. Going to plant a few types of flower / plantings that require winter stratification. Like the red twig dogwoods in the bottom of one of my Rain Gardens that I placed medium River Rock in the bottom -

I love what you have done. I wonder if you have heard of wicking beds or ollas for irrigation. I recently build a rain harvesting system which collects in barrels like the ones you have, and then via gravity they fill some ollas, the ollas then slowly sip the water into the ground, so I don't have to do anything. The water also fills a wicking bed which controls the level with a float level switch. The whole system runs only on the rain, no electricity, no anything. You already take the work to put the excess water in there so once you build it would be effortless. If it were me i'll try to do some kind of terraces so I wouldn't even need to do that, and if that doesn't work, a solar powered pump to fill the barrels. Just a suggestion, your setup is already great. I hope to see more updates of your it!

I'm always looking to improve on what I've got as it'll never be perfect:) I have heard of Ollas as well as wicking beds... very cool and are on my list of future projects. Actually looking to make Ollas myself as they can be a bit pricey from what I've seen here in the Tucson area. But very cool nonetheless! Thanks for watching and the great tips too! There will be updates for sure too! Joe

+homesteadonomics I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina. People here haven't even heard about ollas, so I made my own. Really easy to make. I just glued with some water resistant glue some terracota pots with some terracota dishes (you could use plastic too for the dishes, or another pot) of the same same size and drilled 2 holes at the top for the incoming irrigation tubing and the outgoing one. So once the first olla fills, the next follows, until the final exit which is the open tubing higher than the water reservoir. Best of luck!

Farmer's Almanac says 21-22 rainfall in Southwest will be average. This may be a good time to build additional storage.

have you thought about getting some wire cattle panels the 16 foot long ones and making a arch over the tank and growing squash on that for shade or 6x6 concrete re enforcing wire the kind they bury in wet cement ?
@Jefferdaughter
@Jefferdaughter 7 лет назад
Great idea, Walt. The galvanized cattle or stock panels will probably last longer in this application, but I don't know what the price difference might be.
@waltlars3687
@waltlars3687 7 лет назад
The 6"x6" concrete wire is cheaper but will rust faster the price of the cattle panels vary by number of wires in it a "hog" panel costs more because it has more wires in the bottom to keep the little piggies in " cattle " panels have a bigger mesh and are cheaper

Did you watch rainwater patterns that were already present and make use of them or did the water previously just run along the road? Fantastic job!!!!

+Permaculture Prepper I haven't.... but now i am:) But I'll still use this corn too as it is an heirloom corn that my wifes family had since they originally homesteaded this area in the 1890s.... no gmo/monsanto junk here..lol!

I think you could companion plant them together, just add beans, or a good N+ source. Thanks again for the share, ive loved this project from the start.

That looks like it works great, Joe! How deep is the retention pond? Also have you thought about adding a second pond lower down to collect more of that water?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 9 лет назад
+Braxton Wirthlin Hi Braxton, it's 18" on the sides and goes down to about 22-24" in the center. And yes, I have plans to expand the whole system for next year… more water retention, growing space, etc,…. and I might even try to incorporate an IBC tote for an elevated water storage to aid in irrigation. Thanks for watching and hopefully next years project is going to be even better!

you need to dig out a few more ponds if water is scarce, also hook the ponds up to a hand pump which feeds into a drip hose in the plant borders, makes it quicker and easier to maintain leaving you more time for other projects, vids and life in general....... and doesnt break the back. when i find a property to buy i am definitly going to be reviewing your vids in detail again to see what i can do before i start building so i can plan it out... first thing food growing and easy watering, maintenance, followed by renewables and then house.

Awesome project! I'm lazier than you, though. I would set up a solar powered pump to do the irrigation part for me 😉
