Today I'm installing an IBC tote Rainwater Harvesting system (with First Flush) for Wyndy, our wild mustang! In the video I'll show you how I set up the PVC Gutter Run Piping, link the IBC totes, assemble a ball valve, create a DIY first flush system and talk about options for a stand for platform for the IBC totes to be raised up for easier usage. And then as always, I'll ramble on about this that and the other ;)
Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions!
Joe
And for those wondering about where I get my IBC totes in the Southern Arizona area.... Justin at Arizona Sustainable Living 520-329-2929

Well, I very much appreciate those kind words…thank you! I try to be the best dad, husband and guy I can be…. Although I know I fall short of what I’d hope. But I guess that’s just our nature. As for Cochise county…. That’s great! As a matter of fact we were recently looking at land out there. The mine by us was trying to buy us out, although we have no intention to move. But we figured if they offered us something sky high then Cochise was gonna be on our short list. I love the freedom element the most. And the opt out build option😊👍

Another fine job complete. You always take pride in your work and it shows thru in the videos even when just making a water collection system. I was a bit surprised that you didnt Tee off with an automatic fill/float valve for the water that is in the Horse Pen, so you don't have to transport the water using the bucket.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
Thank you! As for not doing the float valve. At the moment the water trough is on the other side of the barn in a shade area and I didn’t want to run a hose or pipe there. Also, with all the training we’ve been doing that water gets pretty muddy with the round pen dust. So we’ve been cleaning it out a lot to keep it nice for the horse. But once I get some less dusty media to put in the horse area I will probably at a float valve to that trough and relocate.

If I can I will…. But if seems the last few years each really good rain we had happened in the evening or in days I was at work. But if I can get the footage I would like to. As for the climate stuff….well….I don’t know if I can type all my thoughts on that in a text format….haha🤪 I do think we have an impact on the climate but not at the level that the people who fly around the world on private jets claim. The sun is the single greatest input on the earths climate. But it is rarely talked about by these climate folks. Unfortunately, There is so much political/globalism agenda behind a lot of this. Is it changing. Yes. But by what and how much and in what direction…. And what are the mitigating steps that would make a difference? There’s a whole lot that deserves debate and discussion there. Now for us specifically. The last few years have been incredible monsoon seasons. Like way above average. But not for other parts of the state…. So it depends greatly on location and the current weather patterns. So it depends…. Haha…. Isn’t that the typical response. Anyways, hope all that made sense and thanks for watching!😊🙏

But like our host said, when we pronounce it with a short "o" the definition is literally "water you can put in a pot". I had not much issues with alga the first season with a new clean tote but every other season after that it usually gets quite bad at the end of the summer. Pressure washing it in the spring helps but it's really difficult to fit the washer handle inside the tote so the upper section usually doesn't get cleaned as well as the lower part. It's okay tho because I'm only using it to water plants. Also those +200 gallons are surprisingly quickly used when it stops raining for a month. I should get another.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
Yes, for sure! I’ve also had the same experience. I keep meaning to try one of the covers that folks sell for them….but usually opt for paint or to just clean it out occasionally. And yes, it’s surprising how much water we use. So when you see the level dwindling while using a tank you definitely notice it more. Kinda like using cash versus a card. Makes you more conscious of when you spend.

Is there a fancy math formula for sizing the length of the long 4" down pipe being used as the first flush pipe? I mean does it need to hold a certain amount of water based on the size of the roof you're using to harvest the water or anything, or is this just the size that fits your setup?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
There might be, but I didn’t use one. Ultimately larger capacity will result in more rain falling and cleaning of the roof. But for this scenario I had about 7’ of space available under that ‘T’ so I just eye balled it to where I’d have enough room to access the clean out cap at the bottom. So no specific math formula used on this one at all😂

Those will fill up quickly, especially given you get monsoons, what happens when they fill up, where does the overflow go?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
Well, at the moment they will just overflow onto the ground. But I have been needing to make a water hazard for my daughter to train her horse with some perhaps I’ll get some old pipe and make an overflow run to that just as a temporary thing. Then after that I’ll likely just direct any overflow into a tree well.

@nbaird47
@nbaird47 7 месяцев назад
Thank you for the video and the ideas i now have 😊 I've just scored 12 IBC's, for free from work. I was playing with the idea of flexible hose (because that fits with my transportable pump setup) for my last roof space to harvest water from, but you've jogged my thought process! The semi-perm fittings for the ibc's is exactly what i need to do rather than the mis-match i currently have. This is just for veggie garden water and potentially some aquaponics. My only comment, or question I guess, is with the monsoon coming you'll be expecting a fairly high rainfall rate, so will your gutter transfer ALL the water into the downpipe? In australia we have a large raincatcher to guide the gutter water into the downpipe so there is no loss in heavy rain.

Probably cheaper to start out and easier to clean, but that's just a guess. Plus if you have a tractor, they're portable even when full.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
They are a cheaper option for something smaller like this. Since they are industrial use they get discarded for relatively cheap compared to a newer tank. In general the bigger tank size the better the value. So if you’re only going to need a 1000 or so capacity, then IBC’s can fill the need well. However there quickly becomes more expense and complexity if you were to tie many more than perhaps 2-3. Plus I kinda like the industrial aspect of them…. Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels. Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes. It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity.

Oh boy….i always hesitate to give specific costs on thing like this because prices and availability of these things usually varies so much in different areas. Also, the piping ‘needed’ for something like this can be much less than what I used. As part of my system is to show what CAN be done versus what is minimally needed. But for a quick estimate the IBC totes in potable quality will rang you around $150/tote and the PVC will range from $125-$250 depending on what you use and source it from. I had to use various combinations on this specific system because my Home Depot was out of the cheaper ‘thin walled’ stuff, which would be on the lower side. So I had to get stuff from a contractor supplier that only stocks the heavy stuff. Hope that helps

Nothing new…. We started our seeds in there the winter. And had some bucket veggies growing but nothing new. And all that I’ve shown before. I do plan to do some modifications to it for this upcoming fall/winter….. but I said that last winter as well😂. And that would be the main reason for a new update…. With something new to show

Where do you get the ball & what size do you use for that 3" to 4" reducer?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
I got the one on the clip from a rainwater kit from tank depot.com. But you can also use a kids plastic ball so long as it is large enough to get stopped at the necked down area and hollow so as to float up with the water level.

Thanks! But I’m treading water in getting everything done that I need too🤪. Seems like I’m seasonal minded and I usually clean my main rain tank about a month before monsoons and this year I totally forgot until the other day, when I was like, oh crap I need to clean that thing out. But needless to say I’ll take it when I get it😀👍

Motto: "Live Free" Apologizes in his own video for there being insects in the world. LOL, definitely someone I'd love to meet in person, and would want to help with whatever project is going on. Somehow, the expression "An armed society is a polite society" comes to mind. "Potable"...that's how I've been saying it, and I had to look it up to see that it should be a long 'o', like "poatable", rhymes with "boatable". OK.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
Haha… I know, right😂. But I feel I gotta say it or someone’s gonna blow up the comments about how I need to get a better microphone to filter that noise out or something. It was actually quite worse before I edited it so take down the ringing to where it wasn’t too bad. And I do believe an armed society is indeed a polite society. Lotta wisdom in those previous generations. Probably because they were reading books and not playing games on their phones like so many today😂 Thanks for watching MrBruce!

@@homesteadonomics You're welcome. I've been watching for quite a while now. Some videos, I get my wife to watch as well, though her interests are narrower. I appreciate and respect your broad range of skills, something that seems to be getting rarer as time goes on, but there are always a few to carry on the practice. I grew up with the idea that pretty much everyone knew how to do a bunch of ordinary things, like changing the oil in a car, wiring a light switch, roasting a chicken, sweating a copper joint, sewing on a button, and felling a tree. Then I discovered that too many things were treated as "boy skills" or "girl skills", seemingly arbitrarily, and even then most boys weren't learning "boy skills" and most girls weren't learning "girl skills". That really appalled me. The idea of being so dependent on other people to take care of all basic needs is not comfortable.

I like your work. Most of my work here involves metal fab using both new and salvaged metal tubing and angle. One thing though: Would it be better to house those totes? This would help prolong the plastic totes usable life and prevent algae from the suns rays. Also the height of the metal rack lets you quickly check underneath for snakes. Good job.

Big compliments for your work on this. I myself have three coupled together, both the washer and dishwasher run on harvested rainwater (washer only half the amount of detergent and no fabric softener needed, the dishwasher only half a tab as the water is so soft). One remark though: I've put my totes in 'the dark' as the algae grows fast in daylight. Perhaps you could place them on the other side of the barn wall?

I used a cinder block frame on the 4 corners of the IBC, and I do not recommend this. They sank into the ground from the weight of the full IBC tanks. Landscape timbers wouldn't hold the weight. Rail beams may work. My tank is a 330 gal. If you figure 1 gal of water weighs 8+ lbs, the frame needs to be able to hold 2750 pounds of water. I will try making a solid layer of cinder blocks to hold the weight. I think the more even distribution would work better.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
Yes cinder blocks would settle with time and moisture….you’d need to set on a concrete footer. As for the landscape Timbers…. That is in reference to using them to build up the ground in kind of a retaining wall style. So the compacted ground within the boundary of retaining Timbers, or Railroad ties, would be holding the weight. Anyways just more of a topical overview of options that could be used.

How far up towards your buildings and livestock do you allow your weeds and shrubs to approach before you cut the stuff back? I know you are part of the wild fire management team. I see tumbleweeds and other bushes encroaching on the homestead. I am not judging you, just wonder how you manage your risk.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Год назад
You should check out my video on how we prepare for wildfires. I actually keep a large bare ground area around my house and shop, tanks, etc….. I also keep a large fire break in the form of a walking trail around the property. This specific area was only built a couple months ago and is on the leeward side of our predominant summer winds. So it not as motivated as the rest of the rest of the property.
