Rainwater Harvesting with IBC Tote and Tarp - Wildlife Waterer

DIY rainwater harvesting wildlife waterer using an IBC tote, billboard tarp and an automatic watering dish. This definitely isn't fancy, but it is a good budget option for someone looking to harvest rainwater for animals, livestock or a small garden plot.
NOTE: I was really hoping to have some rainwater footage for this one but just didn't have rains that I could capture when I was filming this. BUT if you check out my 'rainwater tarp project' you can see rain footage and a better description of how it works. Here are some links to those videos.

i have always dreamed of having my own place. Not just me but before my mom passed we always dreamed of a house in the middle of no where since we have lived in apartments pretty much since i was born. One of the major things we wanted to do was be out in the middle of no where for the peace and quiet and so we could live off solar or as much as possible and to collect rain water for either cleaning or the lawn. Now that i found your channel i feel that i could carry out that dream not just for me but to help put my mom's soul at rest knowing that one dream we both had could and does come true. So thanks you have re-ignited that dream and one day i hope I have a beautiful home on some beautiful land like you do.

Thank you for taking care of the animals. Now you need a live cam channel to film the animals, So many people would not think of doing this. When I get my land one day, I intend to do this as well. I did not know there were deer in the desert.

Up here in Alaska we need to manage the amount of rain and your ideas are very helpful even though we have the opposite water extreme, events like washing the car or as camp fire water resource are still just as doable for a similar system. Thanks for the new video!

This is genius but a real simple concept!! At first I was thinking to myself, why so far away? I figured it out when you were talking about the elevation. You had to get far enough away to get the water in the top of it!! Awesome project. I am getting ready to catch some rain off my gutters.

I reckon your daughter is spoiled, on show and tell days at school she can turn up with her own "Attenborough" style video show, and blow all the other kids out of the water ??? How lucky is that, to have her own wildlife show in her own backyard and on video, all hale to her, this is the way to make kids aware that we have some wonderful things around us , and to appreciate how truly great nature is ??? All the best from Aussie as usual !!

Hey Joe, good to know that javelina bite poly tubing; I'm more worried about rodents or cattle trampling it. I have about 500' of the stuff sitting on top of the ground down a hill up around Yarnell...probably have to bury that at some point. Thanks and cheers! Chris.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 6 лет назад
Hey Chris, Yes, they will go for the water whereever they smell it. I was talking to a guy that had a water system get destroyed near Sonoita with the javelina chomping on the tubing. That's why the wire was added. But man, 500' is a long run... so maybe some lathe chicken wire cut while still in the roll would give you some 150' long strips to lay down over the tubing. .... but it might be tricky to cut

If you have the height over the main holding tank one trick you can do to catch more water is a holding tank right at the collection point with large pipes connected then just the small pipe between tanks for a slower drain down. Remember breather pipes at the top and bottom of the run, A cheaty way to do it without having pipe standing strait up is put a post to the height needed and run a garden or other cheap hose up that to act as the breather so if it gets damaged it is just a cheap hose to replace. With a little planning you can have the space under a rain roof for storage/parking/workshop with the excuse of yes it needs to be that large as it is only 0.62 gallons per sq foot so in a light rain a large roof gathers a huge amount or Yes it needs to be that tall to get the height the gravity system requires to get water out to your flower beds.
