Actually I think the way you stretched the net wire was quit ingenious. I agree net wire or even chicken wire is quit hard to make straight and not have bulges in it due to how it is manufactured. Great garden and video. :)
Mulch is good but landscape fabric will haunt you in the end. Weeds will germinate in the mulch and then get rooted into the fabric. Better to burn off weeds and mulch deeply. I spent days ripping out fabric at a girlfriend's place because the weeds were stuck tight. Live and learn.
I have had good and bad experience with it. The weed roots will go right through the low cost stuff, but I am hoping this higher quality fabric will work better. Time will tell.
Oh boy--dont ever let grass get into there...it loves mulch over weed barrier, the rhizomes punch right through weed block. And then it will be sheer H3!l to get out. Harder than just digging out grass. Next, a chicken run around the garden--zone of death to keep bugs and grass away?
I've just stumbled upon your channel and I'm so glad I did. Your garden is beautiful and your straightforward no nonsense approach to getting the job done is refreshing. Thanks for sharing your gifts with the rest of us. Bless you.
Absolutely loved this "How To" Video, which not only" highlights" the actual process but the great layout and design...Being an avid Raised bed/container gardener myself with my own "set up" similar to your own and a few videos on my own youTube channel "Gardening With Vincenzo", this is definitely a "True Resource" video for all the growing enthusiasts out there ! Thanks for sharing and hope your Harvests are bountiful !
I can't wait to build my raised garden beds!! This was a great video! Thanks for sharing! Your right, we can't use mulch against the houses here in Florida like you stated, but it would probably work out in the raised bed area for sure!!🌸
Very efficient and manageable looking garden. Just one minor thought. If you had flipped the fence over it seems it may have unrolled more naturally. Really great channel! I look forward to learning much more. Thank you.
I've personally used cardboard. It tends to warp and curl up when it's really dry, and the mulch would never stay on it the same as when I used fabric...maybe because of drainage, I don't know.
I find local tree companies and ask for wood chips.. it does a great job with being a mulch and over time it decompose and help adding organic matter into my soil..
Hi there! I started to close my garden too, just because the rabbits eat more than us....lol I like what you did but I have a question please; Do you think it would be easier for me to attach the netting before I put up the fence , I would have to build by section right?
I have seen fences built section by section like you are talking about. If it is just rabbits the fence wouldn't have to be very tall either. I think it is easier to stretch the netting at the end because less cutting is required but both ways will work. Thanks for watching.
A bent nail is a handy holder if you dont mind a nail hole, but fencing is dangerous. My Dad lost an eye being careless with a roll of fencing so I advise people to treat it with respect and care because it is spring loaded and has a mind of it's own if left untethered. Absolutely use eye protection.
We don't have all the pests you have we have some imported insects from Europe and the rest of the world. My problem is moth's and butterflies next month and as it warms up people in my country have been told to stay in doors and not to go out to beaches and go sunbathing this weekend where the temperature will jump from 12°c/13°c 55f to 58f to 20°c/22°c sorry we do both Celsius and Fahrenheit 72f to 75f. We have Celsius when it's cold and when it's warmer we use Fahrenheit it's our TV weather people.
I quit growing cabbage because of the moths over here. We have all been ordered to shelter in place for the next 30 days here in NY. Thanks for watching.
Cardbord is more agreeable for the soil. After ya get that down ,25-30 bags deciduous leaves , logs 2 years dead , more leaves , 2-4 inches horse or cow manure , another 25- 30 bags of your neighbors leaves then timothy hay about 1 foot deep. No weeds. No watering. No fertilizing . Good for 15 - 20 years just adding hay in fall .
Great looking fence, I have used a long piece of 550 cord through the cardboard tube makes it easy to put fabric down, just pull it down my rows. That way I don’t have to do all that bending over. Btw Like your tiller, one of the best
I have a question if you don’t mind. On one of your videos I committed on noticing your walkways / paths some had gravel and some had mulch. On your gravel, what size did you go with and how deep did you lay it? Also did you put anything under the gravel before installing it? I want to go with gravel and I’m thinking of using #11 but wondered if it’s what you used. Thanks
I used what they call pea gravel around here. It is about 3/8 to 1/2 inch. I put down 6 mill black poly first and about 3 inches of gravel. I poked some small holes in the poly with a pitchfork. Cut out the poly under the beds.
Hey buddy, I just had to tell ya I am just still amazed with your garden, I’ve showed this video to several people now just showing off your garden LOL. Looking at some of your other’s now to. Wished you were my next door neighbor, I would soak in as much teaching you’d offer. Anyway sorry to pester you again, but just had to share that with you. Have a great season this year.
Did you know the Caesar salad was invented in Mexico. At restaurant called Caesar and they make it at the table were they still do today. I got everything in tubs Ginger, Dwarf beans, Green beans, Broad beans, tomatoes I will be starting in the next two weeks because of frost up to may we live at the same latitude has Canada in Britain. Onions and garlic this weekend and also potatoes 3 varieties one New or Early potato, a Roasting, Mashing, chipping potato and a Red potato. No fruit they get more problems than I care to deal with not saying that vegetables don't get problems. Vegetable Rights and Peace.
We still have almost months till danger of frost is over so I am way behind you. Those little flea beetles and Japanese beetles are my worst enemy. A great yearto have a garden. Thanks for watching.
Fabric under the mulch hmm. Mulch turns out to be great soil what do you think will happen? I wouldn’t use that fabric. I do love the way your garden is organized. Thanx and keep up the good work
My vegetable garden got poisoned once when some drunken bum sh*t in mine. It killed my tomatoes, Jalapenos, and my basil. It doesn't help that I live across the street from a bar. One morning at 3 AM I found a young lady from the bar puking in my raised bed garden. Never ends.
Looks great, you may know by now...but mulch 4 inches thick, you don't need weed fabric due to the mulch forming a mold crust on the bottom which becomes your weed barrier! Little money saving tip ;)
I find most of the weeds come from the top and the roots will go down into the dirt if the barrier is not used. The bird droppings spread many seeds and anything that starts is easy to just rake out with the barrier. Thanks for watching.
I have used it for years and it works good for paths like this. I just scrape the mulch off and toss it in the woods when it decomposes. I don't trust the chemical colloring they add to the mulch to be safe inthe garden. Thanks for watching.
Your video inspired me to rebuild my garden fence similar to yours. How'd you set the top and bottom rails? What measurements did you base them off of? I saw in the video you used a pocket hole jig, are the pocket holes on the inside of the garden area? How does that hold strength wise to the 4x4 post? Thanks in advance!
I just set the posts on 8 foot centers plumbed them up and then put level string at the top and marked the 8' 2x4 rails using the posts so they would be a perfect fit. Spacing doesn't really matter for a fence like this. The kreg outdoors screws seem to hold good but if you want a stronger joint they make a HD jig that uses much larger screws but costs $60.00. The pockets are on the inside but that doesn't matter either. Thanks for watching.
This is super informative video. The detail around stretching and stapling is great. Finished product looks very nice. Do you have a video on setting the posts? Thanks again, Greg
I love how you have your raised garden and the fencing looks good..... I'm wanting to do something similar to that this spring..... I enjoyed watching.... Thank you for sharing....
Human hair keeps most pests out of gardens. The smell drives them away per instinct. Barber shops will give you bags of it for free. Been using this method for years with great success. Add this to your fence and you’ll have 0 issues with critters.
I tie socks full along the woods and they seem to help. The best deterrent for deer is miliorganite and I also sprinkle it around the garden. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful garden. I'm hoping to eventually do the same, but add a second fence about 3 feet out and cover it with bird netting, to allow my chickens to free range in a safe location. It's called a "chicken moat", allows the chickens to catch the bugs going in and out of the garden. I have way too many predators to allow the chickens to free range without protection.
wow that is high.... I didnt know you where in new york ...up state i would guess...I lived on long island for a short time before i moved to fl... new york..... really not for me... my x husband is from there...
The current governor keeps giving out free stuff to all and somebody has to pay for it. The state mandates are killing rural upstate counties. Highest tax rates in the country.
Landscaping fabric always lasts too long. You spread the mulch on top of it and eventually the mulch breaks down into soil and now you've got some plastic in your soil preventing the earthworms from getting through but not really stopping any weeds.
They make it a lot easier to take care of. I am hoping the fence will keep the deer out as with the mild winter there seem to be quite a few young dumb ones with no fear this year. Thanks for watching.
Your garden is very neat and tidy, and good fence stretch trick to keep in mind. But, kinda a waste of the mulch. I get no mud, could have used wood chips from tree trimmers or gravel. I like your pots, but don't know what they are. Garden on!
wow! you are a top notch garden maker. Way beyond ordinary. Can you please explain what *miliorganite* is or does to keep deer away. I saw the mention of it in the comments. Thank you for sharing and inspiring and encouraging with your video.
I just do a thick layer mulch cardboard mulch again.cardboard then mulch. just keep layering it. if push comes to shove i can harvest it and start again.
